So, does anyone still want to argue whether the Bengals were smart to cut Simmons when they did?

If so, try debating the issue based upon Simmons merits as a player, not on the injuries that swept through the Bengals LB corp last year.

Again.....

Dhani Jones > Brian Simmons

Yeah, that.

Well, that's just the point: it was exactly the rash of injuries at LB that turned Simmons' release into yet another 2006 & 2007 offseason move that backfired. Same way that extending Willie and extending Levi and letting Steinbach go and franchising Smith have all come back to haunt the team.

It's been immensely frustrating to me that so many of what ought to have been good moves, or at least non-harmful ones, in the last few years have gone awry. Give Carson a new, $100 million deal? Great -- and then seven days later Kimo rips his knee off. Show Cad new money not once but twice -- and last season he goes off his meds. Extend Willie and Levi and let Steinback walk -- and Eric goes on to succeed in Cleveburg while Willie and Levi promptly fall to pieces, and Levi goes grumpy to boot. Franchise Justin, and he goes on to his worst year ever. Back a Brink's truck up to Geathers house and his sack totals plummet. Let Simmons walk and we have 27 LBs on IR a month into the season.

Everything the Bengals touch lately seems to turn to crap. Through no real fault of their own, but there it is. I've come to dread an extension of TJ or Stacy, because the way things have been going they will be hit by a bus when they walk out from signing their deal.

Another one!

EAGLES CUT SPIKES

When we mentioned on Saturday that Eagles linebacker Takeo Spikes wasn't on the depth chart any longer and inferred that this could be a sign that the Eagles might be dumping him at some point in the future, Eagles web guy Dave Spadaro called us "absurd" and "stupid" and "incontinent." (Okay, we're exaggerating. He didn't call us stupid.)

Regardless, Spikes is now no longer an Eagle.

According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network and our friends at WIP radio in Philly, Spikes has been cut.

The move creates an immediate $5 million in cap space.

Spikes was traded with quarterback Kelly Holcomb and a late-round pick from the Bills to the Eagles in 2007 for defensive tackle Darwin Walker, who eventually was traded to the Bears. None of the three players currently is under contract with any NFL team.

Not me bro. Never was too keen on him. I would have been happy to see them keep KK but Simmons never lived up to expectations (see Justin Smith) IMO.

I was lukewarm about Spikes but basically he didn't really want to be part of the turnaround here which is a shame. In hindsight he could have been a big help to Marvin in those first few years. I think he would have been that "face of the defense" has been looking for since he left.

Not sure if I really want him back. Not sure what he has left. Besides hopefully Odell will be wearing No. 51 this fall.

Yeah, bad luck.

Should've cut Simmons sooner. He proved why in New Orleans, he's not good, hasn't been for some time.

But you know, bad luck Bengals can't catch a break, they always make good personnel moves/decisions. Too bad their stars always want to get the hell out.

I will always love this guy. Him dissing Marvin aside, he probably figured Marvin would never get the control he did, and maybe rightfully so. He saw how Lebeau was treated....

Spikes wasn't stupid, neither was Dillon.

Right again, SS. Spikes was so intelligent he got out of cincy just in time to go to that up-&-coming buffalo team where he found so much success.

Once again, every current Bengal player sucks and is stupid and every former Bengal player is great adn a genius. I could've sworn a number of posts from you during the last season where you called the decision to cut Simmons as yet another bad call by the Bengals. Clearly, you were wrong about that, but don't let that change your sharing of hindsight with us.

I have a friend that works very closely with Takeo and accoding to him he said he was contacted by the Bengals along with the 49ers, and Pats. He said Willie Anderson and marvin both talked to him about coming back to Cincinnati. He said he would interested...what do you guys think

If no other FA LB comes on the market I'd take a look at him, proven vet with locker room presence assuming he could stay healthy for a season. I figure that a lot more LBs will hit the market before and after the draft, so that will be an interesting process.

If we could pick up Robertson, Spikes, Utech and Odom that would be a very solid offseason.

Imagine a dream LB corps of Spikes, Brooks, and Odell. Nasty.
