ShulaSteakhouse
Hilarious. Could be the worst tagged franchise player in NFL history since it's inception. Do they really think another team was going to pay him that much $ short or long term? Please. While I'm glad they didn't tag Justin again (still a chance they sign him to a longer term deal unfortunately) I would've just assume keep Steinbach last year, instead of paying a lesser player the same amount a year later. But nooo, Brown's gotta stick to his strict position allotment philosophy that's failed miserably for years and years. Why even use the tag this year if you don't have to?This franchise is, as expected, still utterly hopeless. Variety
This team is so pathetic. Who do we tag next year? Jeff Rowe?
TJJackson
Might as well.....this organization is clueless. Most teams franchise stars or superstars. Heck, even a well-established moron like Bill Bidwell gets this concept. Us? We franchise backups.un-freakin-believeable.
HoosierCat
While I'm glad they didn't tag Justin again (still a chance they sign him to a longer term deal unfortunately) I would've just as soon keep Steinbach last year, instead of paying a lesser player the same amount a year later.Well, unless you have a time machine handy, there's not much chance of that happening now, eh? And in pointing out how letting Eric go didn't work out, you simultaneously refute your own "worst tagged franchise player" assertion, and answer your question, why did they use the tag if they didn't have to? Answer: they had to. As I wrote a few days ago:But the offensive line is a disaster. They let Steinbach go last season, both starting tackles are injury wrecks, Keift gets hurt every time he moves, Bluto is struggling to cut it at center, and if Stacy walks, our depth is Scott Kooistra. Ugh. That's an invitation to get Carson's other knee ripped off. Tagging Stacy gives you an insurance policy on the line, and one more year to judge whether he's really capable of taking Willie's place and thus deserving of a big long-term deal. BengalChamps
This is rediculous! Why let Steiny go!! Does any one down there have a plan? Their decision making process is like watching my 7 year old play RISK!

Heck, even a well-established moron like Bill Bidwell gets this concept. Us? We franchise backups.un-freakin-believeable.You guys are forgetting one thing. Protecting Carson Palmer. Stacy can do that. Who is behind him that can step in and keep Carson clean? Other reasons, they have had him in house for 3-4 years, they know the guy. He's first round talent drafted in the 4th or 5th round. Replacing him won't come cheap and might not be as good. Now they can use their day 1 picks on the defense, or maybe a stud RB like McFadden or Jonathan Stewart. No Stacy then they must pick a RT, most likely the #9 pick of the draft. To me this was the only option.
AMC
Interesting to see all the negativity surrounding this move. I like it. I think it is a stepping stone to a long-term contract. Big Willie's replacement needs to be found and signed for at least 3 years after Willie retires. Stacy is that person. This allows greater bargaining power as other teams can negotiate contract offers with Stacy. This allows the Bengals greater maneuverability in long-term contract talks. Bottom line they saw Stacy as Willie's replacement and locked him up with the goal being a long-term agreement.
TJJackson
Willie's replacement is Whitworth, imho
DuffMan
I don't know what this has to do with Eric Steinbach and why people are bringing it up. Does anybody remember what happened last year when Leonard Davis and Derrick Dockery hit the market? Teams shelled out tons of cash for relatively unproven players. The same thing would have happened had Stacey hit the market and we would have had no shot at him. While the price is rather steep the Bengals now get to evaluate Stacey for one more year, gauge the health of Willie, and if need be lock him for a long term deal if they think he can be Willie's replacement. Was Eric Steinbach going to usurp the RT spot from last year? The Browns paid 23 million over the first three years for a guard who cant run block, but granted is a good finesse player. Stacey has tons of potential and upside, the Bengals know it and so does the rest of the league.
HoosierCat
Interesting to see all the negativity surrounding this move. It's understandable. After all, this is a tagging that has less to do with the player being an elite talent (which Stacy isn't, and may or may not ever be) and more to do with the battered state of the o-line. TJJackson
4th year players are no longer about potential and upside. They are about production or the lack thereof. You want potential and upside? That's the guys in the draft.

Why the hell would we pay that much money for a RT? What team does that? You can always find a starting RT in free agency. Or even draft a rookie in the 2nd or 3rd round to play RT. Any solid rookie can do that. Andrews is not an elite tackle, he will never play LT. And now we pay him 8 million for one year, and after that he will probably ask for 60 or 70 million now that he got tagged. He probably thinks he's elite now. And his agent will use this (being tagged) during the negotiations. All this for a guy who plays RT. One of the easiest positions to fill in football. God.After this move i fully expect Marvin to lock up Dexter Jackson longterm so Ndukwe can sit on the bench. Oh and Madieu will probably get a huge contract as well. While we're at it lets move Justin Smith to OLB. Talk about not making progress.
HoosierCat
I don't know what this has to do with Eric Steinbach and why people are bringing it up.If Steinbach is still in stripes, Stacy almost certainly doesn't get tagged.Does anybody remember what happened last year when Leonard Davis and Derrick Dockery hit the market? Wraith
This frees us up to concentrate on the D-Line for the draft.Stacey played very well for us last year and as far as Whitworth being Anderson's replacement...who is going to replace Jones? or play Left Guard? This was a very good move <IF> this moves contract negotiations forward with Stacey and his long term deal gets done before June 1st. TJJackson
Talk about all the silver linings you want. You cannot overpay -- and in particular, you cannot overpay a backup -- and expect to maintain a successful franchise. This was a horrendously bad move, a bad joke from a franchise committing itself to remain a bad joke for as long as possible. Here's a thought: Andrews rides the pine and gets 8 million. What do other starters, most of whom are paid far less than 8 million each, think about this?
Wraith
No Chance Stacy goes into the season without a reworked deal that costs considerably less than 8 million. This gives the Bengals a chance to negotiate with him in a vacuum.
TJJackson
Can I quote you on that later, when he signs the 1 year deal, grits his teeth, and awaits next year?
Wraith
Yes and you can add me to the "awful decision" list if that happens. I put my faith in Katie that with the threat of paying Andrews 8 million dollars this year, they will get a deal done that works for both sides. They now have until June 1st to get it done before this tag counts against the cap.
Kazkal
Willie's replacement is Whitworth, imhoAgreed,He did a good job at left tackle I don't him having a problem as RT which he was always more suited for.Draft a LG day 1 this year IMO,Maybe they just wanna use stacey as trade bait and will pull the tag off at last second if they choose. This was a great move by the Bengals, that man was going to get a big pay day in free agency sites were already talking about that he would be one of the top three commanded offensive linemen during the free agency. Andrews can play any position on the line, he's just as talented as Steinbach look for him to be a pro bowl consideration just as soon as he gets his day. Hold on for all the cry babies on here, they would change there tune as soon as the season started and Big Willie was hurt and they had absolutely nobody that was worth talking about to substitute for him. I'm also happy that they did not tag Justin Smith, either sign a long term contract or get to stepping. , maybe they don't want him back and plan on drafting one of the defensive ends in the draft that will give you the same or more production then he brings. Same with Madieu sign a long term contract or go be on someone else special teams. A few more cuts and I will be happy this off season. TJJackson
The fact that this means Justin won't get tagged is definitely a nice silver liningHasta La Vista, Justin
HoosierCat
You need to drop the crack pipe right now and go get help if you think that he's not going to start somewhere on that line this year.Yup. We already know there is a 100% chance of Willie being hurt, since his foot injury is a permanent condition. Even if Stacy ends up doing nothing but rotating with Anderson, that will still extend Willie's career.
HairOnFire
4th year players are no longer about potential and upside. They are about production or the lack thereof. Andrews started at least 11 games last season and by some accounts allowed fewer sacks than any member of the O-Line. In addition, he's proven capable of playing three spots on the line, LG, RG, and RT. So he is producing, and unless the team was willing to let one of their project players leave just as he was returning major dividends then this was the only move that could be made. In addition, the move allows the Bengals to address positions other than OT in the coming draft, bad news for those amongst us who were pimping that idea, but happily for me I wasn't one of them. I love the idea of the Bengals freeing up their ability to draft defense again and again.
