BengalszoneBilly
Kiffin declined. I just heard this on Sports Center! Talk about not given the slightest chance.Jesus...what kind of confidence can he have after this? IMO Crazy Al will just fire him, and soon. Rumor has them leaning towards Dennis Green. HoosierCat
From PFT...If Kiffin quits, he won't be entitled to any of the $2 million per year that he's due to receive over the next two seasons, before the team-option portion of the contract is triggered. If he's fired, he gets it all -- less any money he earns coaching elsewhere.Per Florio, Kiffin has responded (in not so many words) "go f**k youself, Al." No surprise there, eh? HairOnFire
There was speculation this would happen even before Kiffin was hired, as he rumored to be Davis's 4th choice, and the pool of experienced head coaches for hire had nearly dried up. Worse, Davis had been rejected so many times that jokes had started about nobody wanting the job. As for Kiffin, it was said at the time that he would gain from the experience of being a head coach, but could fail totally without his reputation being stained due to feelings that Davis would always share the Lions share of blame. Finally, I'm guessing Davis has no choice now and has to fire Kiffin.

Pidge
I think, in my booze filled haze, I remember reading that Greene turned Davis down last year. I could be, and probably am, horribly incorrect though. SoP ain't all that bad, considering.
COB
Al Davis needs a bib. But he's doing a great job with the Raiders! I have learned on this board that it isn't your recent success/failure ratio that matters, it's your overall record. Since Al has a winning record as an owner/GM, including Super Bowl wins, he's handling the Raiders magnificently! If only retarded Mike Brown would fire his head coach every season, sue his business partners ever couple years, and just generally be crazier than a s**thouse rat, we'd have a good team like the Raiders. Then our best season in the last five years would be 5-11, like the Raiders. And we'd have three 4-win seasons, and one 2-win season. Dammit Mike Brown, take some lessons from Al Davis, he's a winner. And for God's sake, buy some new clothes and a big-ass German car. Just remember, it's the overall record that matters, not what you are accomplishing today.

Now back to the topic at hand...Raiders deny report that team asked Kiffin to resignBy JOSH DUBOW, AP Sports WriterJanuary 25, 2008ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders denied a report Friday that owner Al Davis asked coach Lane Kiffin to resign.ESPN, citing unidentified sources, reported that Davis drew up a resignation letter for Kiffin two weeks ago, but the coach refused to sign it. Kiffin has two years left on the contract he signed last January.ADVERTISEMENT "There is no issue here," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said. "There was never an issue here. There's nothing to it."Kiffin declined to address the report when asked about it by ESPN at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala."I'm not going to comment on anything that has transpired in the past three weeks," said Kiffin, who is coaching the North team in the college all-star game.Speculation about Kiffin's status began three weeks ago after reports surfaced following the season that he wanted to fire defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The Raiders dismissed those reports and announced that Ryan was staying on as coordinator.Kiffin told reporters at the Senior Bowl earlier in the week that his relationship with Ryan "is not an issue."Kiffin is scheduled to interview former San Diego Chargers receivers coach James Lofton on Monday for a potential job on the Raiders' staff, Herrera said.Lofton, who was fired earlier this week by San Diego, interviewed for the head coaching job in Oakland the previous two years. Lofton lost out to Art Shell in 2006 and to Kiffin last year.Kiffin, 32, was the youngest man to coach a game in the NFL since Harland Svare took over the Los Angeles Rams as a 31-year old in 1962. He overhauled almost the entire coaching staff after he arrived, hiring 14 new assistants. The team went 4-12 in his first season in Oakland, doubling the team's win total from the previous year and showing signs of improvement in many areas. But the defense under Ryan struggled despite returning all 11 starters as well as some key reserves from a unit that allowed the fewest yards passing and third fewest total yards in the league in 2006. Pidge
SoP ain't all that bad, considering.Someone please ban this homer. Interesting article. Old Al has been the wrong side of bats**t crazy for a while now. I wouldn't surprised if he penned a resignation letter for himself at the same time. Hard to imagine Kiffin will be there next season. The Raiders, the Lions. hehe.
HairOnFire
Well Dennis Green was available then, was he not? If so, why didn't Davis go that way then? According to my morning paper, the Los Angeles Times, Davis has been trying to lure Denny Green to the Raiders for almost 10 years. Up to this point Green isn't having any of it, though his fortunes have changed for the worse in recent years and he may no longer be in a position to turn down ANY NFL head coaching offer. It's also interesting to note that the Raiders are currently paying their head coach slightly less than Norm Chow was getting as an offensive coordinator for the Titans. It's a crazy story, and it just gets more so with the Raiders statement that they expect Kiffin back. Even if the story is overblown it seems like they've cut Kiffin off at the knees, and that type of thing is rarely ignored in the lockerroom.
