Bengals to interview Zimmer

Mark is currently traveling but just called in with this piece of news on the Bengals search for a new defensive coordinator:

A new candidate has emerged to replace Chuck Bresnahan as Bengals defensive coordinator.

Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer will interview today with the Bengals. Zimmer is still under contract with the Falcons, but was given permission by the team to pursue other opportunities. The Falcons are in the process of interviewing for a new head coach.

Zimmer previously was defensive coordinator with the Dallas Cowboys.

Next year moght be the start of a new era! New DC, maybe get Thurman back. Looking positive for a change.

Besides Carolina defensive backs coach Tim Lewis, a former coordinator with the Steelers and Giants, the Bengals also are believed to be interested in talking to former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan and current Bengals secondary coach Kevin Coyle.

Zimmer would be fine by me.

eh...another re-tread scheme guy. Let's have some new blood...unless they can get Rex. I want a guy that is hungry and not a guy that is living off his past and has problems adapting. To me this guy seems like a figurehead coach and that he had problems this year because the HC for the Falcons was Petrino who knew squat about defense. Isn't it time the Bengals found a diamond in the rough and created a guy like the Patriots Offensive Coordinator? A guy that started off as a ball boy and is now a very sought after head coaching candidate despite being in his early 30's?!?

OK so hire a ball boy now and in 15 years he'll be our offensive coordinator. Doesn't help us this year though. ;)

From his Wiki: "The 2004 Dallas Cowboys gave up the fewest yards in the NFL while running an aggressive speedy 4-3 defense."

Sold! I'll take that over Chuckie any day. I can't blame the guy at all for the Petrino mess.

You did an extremely fine job at missing the point...I applaud you :sure:

The good news is that they are looking outside of the current staff.

Yup, definitely. I would be fine with Zimmer, Donnie Henderson or Rex Ryan, all of whom were mentioned in the story on the official site.

I'd really like to know precisely the names of these "people" who are doing the searching and interviewing for our new defensive coordinator. This is such an important decision for the team to make as well as possible that only Marvin Lewis and Mike Brown should primarily be involved in this. These blog entries and team news releases don't reveal these details.

Any ideas anyone?

Not sure where you're going here, and I know you aren't pimping the actual ball boy, but can I suggest that the person who best fits your rant is....(Wait for it.)....Kevin Coyle?

Maybe...he must be doing something right to not only keep his job but for the Bengals to trust him enough to put so many young draft picks under his tutorage.

I like some of the things in his past including some work at UC and working with Pat Hill at Fresno State. Thing about him is, he isn't a spring chicken (Turns 53 in two weeks) and has not elevated his coaching any higher than college defensive coordinator.

My opinion is that, if the Bengals don't get Rex Ryan I think Mike Brown would rather settle for a guy like Coyle, that will come in for less money and already knows the system and players.

Just my 2-cents

What is the point? You want a diamond in the rough but 1) we're not going to be able to steal another team's diamonds, and 2) we don't have any of our own. So while I'm quite on board with the notion of developing them, it's not going ot solve our current problems.

Please, if your point is anything other than simple complaining, elaborate.

Zimmer does have the best resume of the 3 names that are being tossed around seriously ... ( at this point I just don't see a serious chance of Ryan coming in ) Looked up the other 2, and they just don't do much for me..

Tim Lewis ....Despite aggressive defensive schemes during his time in Pittsburgh, Lewis reverted to soft defense in his last 2 years in Pittsburgh and while in New York. Also ..... Lewis' soft defensive schemes, including a diminished use of blitzing led to unpopularity among New York Giant faithful. Giants defense in 2006 finished 25th overall, 28th against the pass and 14th against the run. He was fired on Jan. 11th 2007.

Donnie Henderson ........ In 2005, Jets had a 2nd ranked defense against the pass, but a 32nd ranked defense against the run. He was not retained when Edwards was replaced by Mangini.

He was hired as DC for the Detroit Lions and his defense finished 27th. He was fired on Jan. 2nd 2007.

At this point I'd be inclined to favor Zimmer. I'd like to say " In Marvin we trust", but seeing as how this is going to be the 3rd one ........ well .. you know ..

How can you say we aren't going to steal another teams diamonds when it happens all the time? Coaches are hired off of other teams staffs on a year by year basis. Secondly, you are right, the Bengals aren't going to develop their own guys if they keep hiring 50 some year old re-tread coaches...which is exactly what I am arguing that they NOT do. Hue Jackson was about the closest thing the Bengals had as a diamond in the rough, BUT Atalanta stole him away to be their offensive coordinator.
