combatbengal
I just read this in an article.Bye week for the Bengals. Some will travel, some will relax at home, and some will continue working out at Paul Brown Stadium. Welcome to the bye weekend, the head-clearing break for an embattled Bengals club reeling from three straight defeats.I agree with letting guys relax a little bit and getting healthy. However, they need to practice, have meetings, watch film, do what ever needs to be done to turn this around. They can practice without pads, go at 50%, etc. They don't need to be traveling and home relaxing! Some of these guys haven't even earned a pay check yet! Just my opinion. But then I spent a year in Iraq with no days off, never could let your guard down, no relaxing, etc!
damiancasey
Agree - when you are competing at this level you'd better be 150% committed. That means that everything comes second - yes...during the football season - even family. If you're not prepared to make that commitment then maybe you should consider the CFL or the arena league.Several years ago when LeBeau was coaching the orange and black my brother saw him out late at a bar called Neons downtown during the season. The next morning he told me about it and we were both pretty saddened. The fact that he was out pretty much confirmed that we were screwed. combatbengal
TomBrady, you're reading into it. Yes they need to take it easy. That means slow down a bit, practice without pads, go 50% speed, watch game film. It doesn't mean, don't show up for practice, go visit granny, hang out late at night at bars, etc. They keep saying that they need consistancy. How do you get that by not putting 110% into it? Do you think soldiers get down time in a combat zone? No, they are always looking for ways to survive and win the battle. If they're not out on patrol, they're cleaning their weapon, refitting their equipment, gathering int, etc.

cincyhokie
They're still human beings. They deserve to get time off too. I'm sure the golden boy Patriots let loose too......it's not like we actually expect them to bury their noses in the playbook and the film room all day and night. Hell, if they did that they would burn out. Just like we would burn out if we did nothing but work.Vegas. Cool. If I'm single and a football player, I'm going on that trip. It doesn't mean I'm going to do a couple hundred lines, hire a hooker, and blow out my ACL dancing in a club.Relax everyone.
BengalszoneBilly
They're still human beings. They deserve to get time off too.Okay...I'll roll with this fantasy premise: I'm a human being. I make FAR less money than these football players do. If I was doing my job as poorly as these alleged professional athletes are obviously doing, the LAST thing I would do is go f**k off in 'Vegas. I'd be at work trying to save my company and my job!**Note!!** hokie I wasn't attacking you here. I'm pissed these guy's feel they have enough slack to take some time off!Actually I'm more pissed Marvin gave these guys ANY time off! No wonder they're getting injured all the time! They aren't conditioning themselves.

They aren't conditioning themselves.I see your point. We just don't know the day to day routine there. Granted the "football" they have played so far is crap. But....they are losing their business and someone like TJ is not going to lose his job, nor should he. In the article it states that Schlegal is staying "in" over the weekend to study. So for someone who may lose his job soon or potentially, he is taking the break seriously.Let's just wait and see. If they come out and smoke the Cheifs then we know the combination of work, rest, and Vegas was the medicine they needed.Basically, I know that we, as fans, want them to bust their asses until they can't move in the morning.......but we're die hard fans who live and breathe through these guys vicariously. Now if they come out and suck ass again against KC, then we can look back at this bye week and maybe make a connection. As far as waiting to see, well I guess we don't have a whole lot of choice now do we?

kenyon1977
With the addition of a few players since the beginning of the season and the fact they look like they have no chemistry on the field I'd say the Marvin should send the whole damn team together. It doesn't matter to me what they do or were they go but keep these dudes together so they can build some chemo.
jonahdsage
I understand the whole "human" thing -- here's where I take exception to it, though. You can look at playing pro football as both a job and a service. Yeah, you get paid to do a job, but by whom? By the people of that city in part. Fans are the customer and, like any business, if the customer isn't happy then things need to change. So for me it's frustrating to see how nonchalant all the players are about this season so far. Nonchalant in how they present themselves to the media at least. Who knows what goes on behind the doors at PBS, but i'm getting tired of "we need to play better football. We need to be more disciplined and stop having the mental mistakes." and on and on. It's fine that they want to go out and relax, live their lives etc. I would have liked TJ to at least acted like some of the bengals were pissed, wanted to go out there and start beating the hell out of some teams. Hopefully they feel that way and we'll see it in KC
BengalszoneBilly
So for me it's frustrating to see how nonchalant all the players are about this season so far.Well either they are this way because... #1: They know things will be better after the bye.or#2: They don't give a rats a$$. combatbengal
Correct me if I'm wrong but don't they work for about six months and then have a few months to chill every year? Plus thye make more $$ then all of us. Let their hair down, relaz, chill. They can do that during the freakin off season!
HoosierCat
Re the bye week, it was my understanding from various tidbits from Hobs and Curnutte that the Bengals got a 3-day weekend starting Friday and would be back in town starting Monday to work on prepping for the KC game. BengalByTheBay
I don't have too much to add, but I always see the attempts by fans to analogize their life to that of an NFL player and it seems kinda pointless to do that. The sooner you realize that these guys don't live like anybody you and I know the less it should grind on you. Yeah, they get paid mad cash to play football. So, they are under a ton of pressure on Sunday to perform well. There's no analogy in your life to going out and doing your job in front of 60,000 people just like there's no analogy to you getting that much money. While it may not be fair, it simply is. So, everytime I hear that "if I were to do that in my job" it seems completely beside the point. So, applying it here, if players go off and party during the bye week (and who really thinks they don't -- even if they don't admit to it?) it's only an issue if you're losing. I really believe that some of these guys spend a lot of time studying film, etc., etc., but there's no way anybody does that for 40 hours a week. It probably wouldn't even be helping you at that point. Some of the guys are like Brian Simmons and stay home with their families. Most of them are like any other young guy with stacks -- they're out spending it and having fun. Hell, I'd be doing that if I was in my 20's. Wouldn't you?
