We have to calm down

You know what they looked like last night?

Tired. Tired and indifferent.

A hard camp may explain all of the injuries and them being exhausted and flat. I expect them to come out much sharper next monday night. If they look the same as they did yesterday next Monday then I will be a bit concerned.

I do like Hall's tackling abilities, but why the hell do they play a prevent defense all of the time. (Seems that way).

I would be surprised if they played much of anything beyond a vanilla zone D, with the occasional blitz tossed in, in preseason. That a top-tier O like NO's can eat that for lunch isn't really that surprising.

What I do find disturbing is that while running this basic sort of D, we're seeing blown coverages and missed assignments...there's just no excuse for that kind of mental laziness, aside from the indifference cited by cincyhokie. And notably, that's what Lewis was most annoyed with.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some depth chart shuffling for next week game. Maybe some guys like Hartwell and Fanene and Indiana Jones get moved up at least for the week. IMHO Marvin needs to do something to shake up the vets and get them to pay attention.

I don't know why you put your two best LB's at the same position (Landon and Hartwell). I'm not sure I understand the reasoning there still - hope that changes. Jeanty and Brooks shouldn't keep those two off the field. Jeanty can be used selectively, and be productive.

Outside of the Brooks situation, I'm much more concerned about the offense than the defense at this point.

BTW Hoos', a couple of more posts and you have reached some pretty hallowed ground. That might be worthy of getting you inducted into the Bengalszone Forums Hall of Fame as a charter member.

i shot the hijackers.

so, i think the so-called prevent defense is nothing more than the bengals D braintrust letting the players have space to make a play on the ball in the air.

i mentioned this in another thread. the D coaches don`t want to bring physical bump and run but prefer read and react style instead. the idea is that the LBs will eventually pressure the QB into throwing an errant pass and the secondary can then make a play, (something Marvin always says) which will result in a turnover.

this scheme relies on LBs to bring heavy pressure and dlineman to fill gaps, taking up blockers. the secondary then sits back and waits for the ball to come into their "zone".

just my idea.

but no one has posted back to me about it yet.

Don't forget about the "Indianapolis" variant of that D, where at the snap of the ball the entire LB corps turns its back on the line of scrimmage and sprints downfield at full speed. :o

THREAD HIJACK!!!!

Fly this thread to Algeria or I will execute the passengers!

Think of it more as a public service announcement or something like that. I didn't intend to hijack the thread just give some well deserved props to a couple of loyal, hard working guys. Ooops, I did it again.

I thought Marvin and Chuck had similar philosphies on defense. This doesn't look remotely close to anything that Baltimore did when Marvin was there or does now with Ryan as DC.

One word: talent. You look at Balti back in 2000, and how do their DTs compare with our current crop? We don't have a single tackle who could hold the jock of Goose or Sam Adams in their prime. Ditto our LBs; if you magically merged them all into one player, Ray Lewis in his prime would still be better. Our secondary might be the closest to a top-tier unit, but as has been often pointed out they can't cover forever and we have trouble pressuring the QB.

What absolutely killed the Bengals D IMHO was the loss of Pollack and Odell. Had they worked out half as well as we all hoped, we'd be a stud DT away from a very good D.
