Willie in a Boot

The Bengals and Saints opened their first of two joint practices at Paul Brown Stadium Thursday morning working separately on two different fields during individual drills...Pro Bowl right tackle Willie Anderson surfaced after a week in Atlanta with his right foot in a boot on the sideline and his status isn't known. Head coach Marvin Lewis has said in the past that he expects Anderson to be ready for the Sept. 10 opener...

Well, that's just dandy. Looks like I may find out if my faith in Koo is justified. At least Levi said in another bengals.com piece that his knee has improved, tho still no timetable for a return beyond hoping to play in the last preseason game.

Didnt Willie or Levi miss the Raven game last year at home. I thought the backup OL played really well that game.

You read enough articles you become depressed seems like the whole team is hurt even before the season starts. The backup wide receivers seem like they can't catch a pass without getting hurt. I say let Levi and Willie take as long as it takes to get back and not to rush them back, I would rather have them in December then September. Hopefully these backup guys can hold it down against Baltimore because I don't expect Willie or Levi to play against them. The only two units that sound like they are staying healthy is the linebackers and the defensive linemen, I don't even count Frostee Rucker anymore we almost have a better chance of seeing Odell lineup and play in a game then Frostee Rucker actually being healthy enough to play in one.

Well, Levi missed a bunch of games last year, and Whitworth proved to be an adequate replacement in general, tho he struggled against top-tier talent (see the Colts game). But that's to be expected for a rook; he should be improved this year.

Kooistra has IMHO fared well in limited duty as Willie's relief over the last few years. My big question with him is, can he go from the first to last snap without wearing down?

I think the biggest issue has less to do with Koo or Whit's abilities (they did well in limited action vs. the Lions) and more to do with, if one or both ends up starting, then we are already cutting into our shallow o-line depth in game one.

Whitworth is already pretty much penciled in as the starter, I thought. Don't think that's an 'if' at this point.

Update from Hobs...it just gets uglier...

Pro Bowl right tackle Willie Anderson surfaced after a week in Atlanta with his right foot in a boot on the sideline and expressed concern that he won't be able to play in the Sept. 10 opener.

Anderson said he had a procedure for an ailment that he wouldn't disclose and said "if it doesn't work, it's bad news." He said if there was a game Thursday, his 112 consecutive game streak would be over.

Head coach Marvin Lewis also wouldn't be specific and said there is a chance Anderson can start against the Ravens and said the procedure wasn't surgery.

Anderson, struggling with the injury since late last season, said the true problem wasn't discovered until last week and he's "disheartened" because he feels he could have had surgery after the season and been ready for training camp.

But Anderson said it wasn't an indictment against the Bengals training staff and said he has confident it can get him ready. He has been told there is a 60 percent chance the procedure will work.

I dunno where to begin with this...he could have had surgery but didn't? Not the (on) crack med staff's fault? Didn't get discovered until last week? (What, can feet get a sports hernia??) Why does the term "clusterf**k" spring to mind?

Paging Scott Kooistra, Scott Kooistra please report to the starting lineup...

I'm really starting to think that the Bengals' head doctor is Dr. Nick from the Simpsons. "Hello Evwybodeeee!"

I'm guessing Mikey cheaped out and hired some dipsh*t who got his MD at a med school in Honduras or something?

Curnutte's version is even uglier than Hob's...

Willie Anderson has `procedure'

Right tackle Willie Anderson, who had not been seen for the last week at training camp in Georgetown, Ky., said this morning that he had a "procedure" in Atlanta in his right foot.

He has a protective walking boot on his right foot and lower leg.

"It's something I did last year and kept playing with it, but I found out it was something new that came out," he said. "By not knowing what it was, I'm afraid I've done further damage to it during the offseason."

Anderson would not say whether he would be ready for the opener Sept. 10.

"But it is a major concern," said Anderson, who has started 112 consecutive games. "Either this procedure works or it's bad news."

"By not knowing what it was, I'm afraid I've done further damage to it during the offseason." Unreal. Does this team even have a medical staff?

More from Hobs:

Anderson said it wasn't an indictment against the Bengals training staff and said he's thankful Lewis suggested last week that he go for a second opinion. Anderson left the club's training camp at Georgetown, Ky., a week ago to visit with foot specialists in Cincinnati and Atlanta and came up with the new diagnosis.

OK, what does it say about you med staff when even the HC is advising players to go get a second opinion?

Worse: *only* the HC actually advised him to get a second opinion. This officially makes Marvin the most qualified medical professional on the team. Un-f'ing-believable.

Let's see - weird diagnosis, foot specialist...plantar fascitis? Achilles trouble? Surely the morons didn't miss a stress fracture...?

And even more good news (not) from Hobs in update #267:

Willie Anderson has been watching ESPN's series on the 1977 Yankees titled "The Bronx is Burning." Now he's suddenly in a starring role of "Bengaldom is Burning" after he showed up Thursday at Paul Brown Stadium with his mysterious right foot in a boot following an undisclosed procedure and the possibility he could miss not only the Sept. 10 opener, but a lot more games than that.

Anderson said he's been told there is a 60 percent chance the procedure will work and that he can get through the season. But he also allowed, "This procedure either works, or bad news comes out. ... I'll know in several weeks."

With quarterback Carson Palmer's other bookend shelved so far for the whole camp with a bothersome knee, left tackle Levi Jones, and speed running back Kenny Irons out for the year with a reconstructed knee, the fire hoses are out.

"I don't know. It depends on who you ask," said Anderson cryptically after the day's morning practice when asked if he could be out for the year. "I'm optimistic the procedure will get me through the season."

So, bottom line, Willie could be gone for the season and we'll know in a few weeks. Dandy. Just freakin' dandy.

(Props to Hobson for the updates & info, at least...)

The injuries this year have been unreal.

The unreality continues. Per Curnutte's blog...

Tailback Rudi Johnson is not on the field for the afternoon practice with the Saints. He injured the top of his right foot in the morning practice.

...and...

Updated 5:20 p.m. -- During practice, rookie safety Marvin White injured his knee during a kickoff coverage drill. He walked off the field without assistance and went into the locker room with Bengals athletic trainer Paul Sparling.

Argh.

Sometimes sh*t just happens, but it could be worse, at least we aren't Cleveland. I'm really beginning to think those guys are cursed !!! Anyway, who can remember the last season the medical staff wasn't talked about in a poor light ?? I personally can remember having a conversation similar to this one every year that I have been on this site... It's just unacceptable for a professional sports organization to have such questions about an area so horribly important as the medical care of their players. I'm still hoping for the best with all of this, but with the tougher portion of our schedule coming early in the season, I'm not real pleased by any stretch !!!

WHODEY !!!
