Ravens quarterback Steve McNair was arrested on driving under the influence charges late Wednesday in Nashville, police said this morning.

McNair was a passenger in his vehicle driven by a man identified as his brother-in-law, Capt. Richard Foley said.

Under Tennessee law, the owner of the vehicle can be charged if he or she is the passenger when the driver is arrested on DUI charges. The owner can be charged even if he or she is not intoxicated, Foley said. It was not clear whether McNair was impaired.

McNair's Dodge pickup was stopped just before midnight after police clocked it at 44 mph in a 30-mph zone five miles west of downtown Nashville. The vehicle was being driven by Jamie Cartwright, who identified himself to police as McNair's brother-in-law.

Both were arrested and taken downtown. McNair was later released, Foley said.

It is unknown whether McNair will face disciplinary action from the NFL. Commissioner Roger Goodell announced his crackdown on personal conduct this offseason.

This is the second DUI arrest for McNair, who guided the Ravens to a 13-3 record in his first season with the team.

In May 2003, McNair was arrested in Nashville on charges of driving under the influence and illegal gun possession. The charges were dismissed after a judge threw out the evidence, stating police did not have sufficient reason to pull him over.

McNair is also the second Raven to be charged with DUI in the past eight months. In October, return specialist B.J. Sams was arrested Oct. 3 after his car swerved and nearly struck another vehicle. He is scheduled to go to court next week.

Good news, it's not one of our guys!!!!!!!!!! This may take some of the heat off of the Bengals. McNair arrested as passenger in DUI case. Also: Falcons' Petrino thinks Vick will be cleared. If we keep this type of crap off of the Bengals and let other teams deal with it, we'll do fine this year. We have the talent the skills to kick you know what and take names.

How will The Roger handle this? Four games? Six games? Strategically ignore it?

If he does lose time, that means we'll be facing Boller on opening weekend instead. B)

Since it's a really odd law, and he wasn't driving, I'm thinking it will get strategically ignored... <_<

This is bulls**t, I mean the guy wasn't even driving, so how do you get charged with driving under the influence? Is it legal to ride drunk, appareantly so.

I believe it will take a number of players on the same team to get arrested and featured in the news before the Bengals lose their "Convict Crown."

Since he owns the truck, it is his responsibilty to see that whoever is driving it is not intoxicated or impaired.

I've never heard of this law before so I don't know if he's charged the same way as if he were the drunk driver. If so, this would be his second DUI, probably worth at least a game from the Commish.

He was not convicted for the last DUI so this is technically his first and I don't even know if they charged him with a DUI or something else, the charges were thrown out on the first one because they did not have a valid reason to stop his car so all charges were thrown out. Steve Mcnair will not be suspended or anything for this, especially since he was not driving the same thing could have happened to Reggie Mcneal if Ohio had the same law. When Odell was arrested for the DUI he was driving Mcneal car, nobody came down on Mcneal so they are not going to come down on Mcnair.

Yeah exactly, was thinking the same thing. And it's not as if I walk around worrying about what other people think about the Bengals' players off-field problems last year. who cares?

It'll go away over the next year if everyone keeps their nose clean.

That is a stupid law... If I'm intoxicated, how am I suppose to be responsible to find a suitable driver to get my drunk ass home ?? I mean if I'm that able minded, I might as well get behind the wheel myself and make the attempt if Im going to get popped anyway... Of course Im not "completely" serious, but you get my point. He was a passenger and just because some backwards state passes a goofyass law, I don't see this affecting his playing time...

WHODEY !!!

I Agree! This is rediculous. I know now that I will never live in Tennessee. As for him getting any suspension, I think he will. Evildell, to me, has too much power and has been giving out some rediculous suspensions. So I wouldn't put it past him.
