Kazkal
Being white may hurt Justin Smith's draft position.COPYRIGHT 2001 The Kansas City StarByline: Jason WhitlockAfter talking to former Missouri star Justin Smith this week about his NFL draft prospects, I suspect he believes what I believe. If he were black instead of white, Smith would be the clear-cut No. 2 pick in the draft behind quarterback Michael Vick. Smith would be hailed as the second coming of "The Freak," Jevon Kearse. Heck, scouts would be clamoring that Smith will be better than Kearse because Smith has the strength to play the run as well as the speed to rush the passer.Instead, no one is quite sure where Smith, who left Missouri one year early, is going to go, anywhere from No. 2 to as low as No. 12. The reason is simple. Professional scouts are afraid of great white athletes. The scouts fear they're being hoodwinked, bamboozled and led astray when they read that a white, 265-pound defensive end runs a 4.55 40-yard dash, bench-presses more than 450 pounds and moves...Good ol Jason whitlock. figure justin haters would enjoy this one.http://www.accessmylibrary.com/comsite5/bi...id=0286-8385341DE | (6-4, 267, 4.7) | MISSOURIBy Pro Football WeeklyNotes: Freshman All-American in '98, when he started every game and had 86 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 3½ sacks. All-Big 12 selection in '99, when he had 92-16-8. Repeated as a member of the All-Big 12 team in 2000, when he had 81 tackles (team high), 24 tackles for loss and 11 sacks. Honor student and a second-team Academic All-American in '99.Positives: Rare workout numbers. A workout warrior who can play football. High-motor, high-intensity player with the speed to rush off the edge. Has excellent quickness and speed. Gifted pass rusher who should improve with better technique and moves. Relentless in pursuit. Never slows down. Always hustles and chases vs. the run. Generally takes good pursuit angles. Seems to be both classroom and football smart. Extremely strong in the upper body and athletic. Always seems to play hard and compete well. Has been very durable in college, starting Missouri's last 33 games.Negatives: Not quite as big and tall as teams would like. Lacks great functional lower-body strength. Spends most of his time playing on the edge. Does a lot more chasing than playing at the point of attack. Do not know if he could play in a two-gap scheme.Summary: Still a little raw and almost always plays on the edge (of the blocker), but he has great speed, a non-stop motor and the desire to excel http://sports.espn.go.com/nfldraft/tracker/player?id=

James_Brooks21
He must have gone to Michael Jackson's dermatologist while at Mizzou. That scounting was almost right on point of course a couple of things negative things are not true but when they said he spends more time chasing then playing at the point of attack that was right on. I'm not going to bash Justin Smith anymore since it looks like he will be a Bengal for a long time once they lock him up, here's hoping for the best years are coming for Justin Smith. ShulaSteakhouse
He's a tweener and always will be. Cincinnati sure does love it's "white guys who hustle," which gets old.I'm thoroughly tired of watching Smith do the exact same thing every year and never show improvement or develop new moves.I would just assume they trade him or let him go after this season - which is what I would think they'd do.With some good Lb's and DT's, Smith wouldn't have to chase down Rb's or pile on tackles.I'll root for him to do well this year if he sticks of course, but beyond that, I hope he is done in a Bengals' uni. HairOnFire
He's a tweener and always will be. You're clueless and always will be. Smith entered the NFL weighing 267 and currently plays at 275. That's prototype size for any 3-down DE who isn't a liability against the run. Bobcat Bengal
damn white boys thinking they can play sports.I mean, who do they think they are?
GregCook
damn white boys thinking they can play sports.I mean, who do they think they are?I'm white and I can't play sports anymore. But I do live in a very expensive home with DirecTV Sunday ticket. So I'm happy about being a white boy with no hops, lateral acceleration, explosiveness, arm strength, etc.
Bobcat Bengal
NOTE:BEFORE ANYONE STARTS GETTING ANGRY AT MY COMMENTS:THAT WAS HEAVY-HANDED SARCASM.Any heavier than that, and I would be leaving bruises.Thank you.
ShulaSteakhouse
You're clueless and always will be. Smith entered the NFL weighing 267 and currently plays at 275. That's prototype size for any 3-down DE who isn't a liability against the run. Typical of your adolescent mentality. If he were 3-4 inchers shorter at that weight (he's 6'4"), and 275 is a big stretch for him, then yeah, maybe he'd be a more effective DE - IF he had long arms like Geathers or the quicks and spin moves of a Freeney, who is 6'1".He has none of that, and is not agile or fast enough to be a LB.There's a difference in someone who's 6'0" - 6'2" and 265-270 pds., and someone who's 6'4" and the same weight. That would be what we call a tweener.Of course when you get to rush the QB every passing down the entire season, you're going to get 6-8 sacks almost by default. And if you don't, you really suck.Everyone and their grandmother knew he was a tweener and a risk coming out of college - it had nothing to do with him being white. This is not some big mystery.Basically, he's a jack of all trades, master of none. Therefore he's a tweener in my book.
Stripes
Thank you Justin Smith for not being a one dimensional player like Dwight Freeney (one of the most overrated players in the league, behind Merriman).
HairOnFire
Therefore he's a tweener in my book. Would that be The Idiots Guide to Football? Your claim that he'd be more effective if he was three to four inches shorter smacks of slack-jawed stupidity, and your empty criticism that he isn't fast enough to be a LB only serves to underscore that he isn't a DE/OLB tweener. He's a pure DE.Thank you Justin Smith for not being a one dimensional player like Dwight Freeney... Question: What do you get when you combine Shula's favorite DE with Hoosier's favorite DT? Answer: The 32nd ranked run defense in the NFL.
