schroomytunes Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Read on Bengals.com that there is interest in Justin Smith, just not for 2 first round draft picks. So in reality why cant we be creative and trade him to a team for a 1st and 3rd round pick in this years draft? This allows us to play Rucker at DE and pick up some solid youngsters in the draft. It gives us flexability in the first 3 rounds to address the defense and snag a TE also. All the while also saving @ 8 million on the cap hit to address some areas of free agency. I just think that we need to look at all avenues regarding Justin Smith, and what we could address by trading him, this trade could totally rebuild our defense if done right. Quote

But that's why I rock in Madden. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Who would trade a 1st round pick for Justin Smith? A second is possible, but def. not 1st round worthy.Id trade him for Lance Briggs, but I am not the GM Quote
HairOnFire Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 The tag was used to give the Bengals options, and I'd be perfectly willing to explore all of them. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Cmon guys, you know Hobson put that in there to get our minds off of free agents. You know we would never trade Smith, in fact he is going to get a huge pay raise soon Quote
Stripes Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 There's no way any team would give up a 1st and 3rd rounder for Justin Smith. If he is to be traded, it'll be for a player or two. Quote
HoosierCat Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Some chatter about him for Briggs here...http://forums.bengalszone.com/index.php?showtopic=14429Certainly one option worth exploring. Quote
HairOnFire Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Some chatter about him for Briggs here...Certainly one option worth exploring. Uhhh, aren't you the guy claiming in another thread that slapping the franchise tag on Justin handicapped the Bengals and reduced their options? Quote

derekshank Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Some chatter about him for Briggs here...http://forums.bengalszone.com/index.php?showtopic=14429Certainly one option worth exploring.I'd do it... but it doesn't seem likely. DE isn't really an area of need for the Bears, especially RDE. Alex Brown and Mark Anderson combined for 19 sacks at that spot last year. I think Smith is a very good DE... but the Bears are likely to find suitors that can give them help where they need it. Quote
ShulaSteakhouse Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 The way some of these deals are going for so-so players, if you can get a 2nd rounder for Thomas Jones (albeit with a team who has extra picks) you can get at least that for Smith possibly.Jets? Quote
HoosierCat Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 On a related note, the DE market is finally forming. A relay from PFT:POSTED 10:39 p.m. EST, March 5, 2007'HAWKS CATCH KERNEYAdam Schefter of the NFL Network and Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com report that the Seattle Seahawks have signed defensive end Patrick Kerney to a six-year, $39.5 million contract. The deal includes a whopping $19.5 million in guaranteed money. The average value is $6.58 million per yearJustin is younger but their production isn't that different. Still, that puts Justin north of $20m in guaranteed coin (somewhere, Mikey's head just exploded). Quote

That just doesn't seem all that likely to me. Trades seem sexy, and make headlines... but my guess is that Justin Smith will be wearing stripes for years to come - and I'm just fine with that. Quote
NJ29 Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Any trade for picks would be ideal. That first and third deal would have me going crazy. Quote

You need a partner with a lot of cap space, though, and those are rapidly shrinking as FA moves forward. If the bengals want to do a deal they need to get on the ball.Frankly, I'm suspicious of this alleged interest. I'm a Justin fan, but even I'll tell you he's solid and nothing more. The idea that multiple teams are out there salivating over him is hard to credit. Quote
Whur CHad At? Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Bengals getting on the ball? Yeah right, we will sit back and let everything come to us Quote
agreen_112 Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 trade him, he's not that great any ways. We need fresh talent not more of the same! I agree with barack, trade him for briggs.... it'll never happen, but would be SWEET... Two draft picks would be great too, but that won't happen either... We'll probably keep him and get the usual 7 coverage sacks recorded by justin and another couple of protection breakdown sacks... Quote

But you claimed point blank that placing the franchise tag on Justin reduced or even eliminated their options, and handicapped them so badly in free agency that the tag should be removed immediately. Now you're posting information about trade options that are only possible due to the tag. It's all very confusing. Quote

Don't worry about tackles, O-Dawg will make up for those lost one's!!! Quote
Kazkal Posted March 6, 2007 Report Posted March 6, 2007 Let's trade him for dwight freeney!!!!!!!!!!! Quote

I think Ahmad Brooks will be able to provide a good boost from SSLB (assuming he plays there). Okoye would be good for that purpose too, even if there's no chance we'll get him. I like our DE tandem as is though. Smith and Geathers complement each other well. Quote
