TE is a position that we definitely need to upgrade this year. Imagine how much a good TE would help Palmer. Eric Johnson, Daniel Graham, or who ever else can catch a handful of TD's would improve this offense tremendously... I hope the Bengals head office wants to win this year!

Me too. That's why I think anyone that believes the source of our troubles is at tight end needs to really step back. In the grand scheme of things, in areas to improve, tight end isn't even close.

I'd be happy with either...Gregg was given 89 and is from socal so carson probbley likes him ^_^

Did Carson play with him during their college careers? IMHO there's a lot to be said about familarity with a reciever.

Possible sleeper....but he really never got the chance to do much in college...

2004: Guenther, USC's tallest player at 6-8 (he also plays a key role on the Trojan men's basketball team), returns as an often-used tight end as a senior in 2004 after starting there in 2003. However, it's possible he'll concentrate solely on basketball in his senior season. Because he was in competitive athletics for 8 consecutive months without a break, he was allowed to sit out 2004 spring practice.

2003: Guenther began his 2003 junior season as a backup tight end, but after injuries sidelined starters Alex Holmes and then Dominique Byrd, Guenther emerged as the starter for the last 7 games. Overall in 2003 while appearing in all 13 games, he had 17 catches for 167 yards (9.8 avg.) with 2 TDs, plus he blocked a field goal (at California). He had a 6-yard grab at Auburn, a 7-yarder against BYU, then had 2 receptions for 24 yards at California. He added a 3-yard catch at Arizona State, a 5-yarder against Stanford and 2 grabs for 13 yards (with a 7-yard TD) at Notre Dame. He had a 7-yard catch at Washington and 2 catches for 26 yards against Washington State. His only catch at Arizona was a spectacular one-handed 20-yard TD. He made 4 receptions for 37 yards against UCLA. He sprained his left knee against Oregon State. His only catch against Michigan in the Rose Bowl was a key 19-yard third down catch to keep a fourth quarter drive alive. Following 2003 spring practice, he had surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back.

2002: Guenther was a backup tight end as a sophomore in 2002. He even started at Kansas State. Overall in 2002 while appearing in 11 games (all but California and Notre Dame), he had 7 catches for 39 yards (5.6 avg.) with a TD. He caught 3 passes at Colorado and had a 3-yard TD reception at UCLA. He had arthroscopic surgery to remove cartilage in his left knee after the Notre Dame game (but returned to play against Iowa in the Orange Bowl).

2001: Guenther was sidelined for most of his 2001 redshirt freshman season while recovering from a 2000 back injury. He returned late in the 2001 season, but did not see any action as a reserve tight end.

2000: Guenther appeared as a reserve tight end in the Penn State opener (he did not catch a pass) but then suffered a herniated disk in his back and had surgery, which sidelined him for the rest of his 2000 freshman season. Because of the early injury, he was allowed to redshirt in 2000, his first year at USC.

Well, basketball playing TE's do have a measure of success in this league. Antonio Gates was an undrafted TE who felt he was better at basketball than football. Not that Guenther is the next Gates. If he was, he wouldn't have been released... but there is no reason to just assume he'll have no impact. You never know with these guys.

Kelly = mediocrity

Graham = needed upgrade

- Which option do you think the Bengals' will pursue?

Whichever player ShulaSteakhouse complains about most.

Answer the question.

It's okay to be truthful and not cheerlead in denial.

Ask a 100 NFL scouts and coaches and they'll agree with me. Kelly is mediocre, and is not a receiving threat defenses have to game plan for.

Does that hurt your feelings?

Your question is flawed in that the bullets you provided aren't acurrate. Whether Graham is better than Kelly isn't important. Ask 100 NFL scouts whether the Bengals need a tight end upgrade, and then ask Marvin Lewis the same question. Who's opinion is more valuable here?

I can understand that you're trying to be an objective fan, or a voice of reason... but the negative extreme is no better than being a blind homer. Find some middle ground, and you won't get lambasted for everything you type.

I'd like to see the Bengals retain one or both of their current TE's. Both know the scheme, and each has value to the team that doesn't show up in the receiving stats as Kelly is a huge force in the running game and Stewart is a valued special teamer.

I have no love for the idea of adding a costly TE in free agency or burning a high draft pick on a player who plays a position that isn't now...and will probably will never be featured...in the Bengals offense. That said, I do like the idea of adding a 2nd day draft prospect that has outstanding physical ability but who qualifies as a legit sleeper.

For example(s)....

Ben Patrick, TE, Delaware - (6'4", 270) Massive, smooth and athletic. Very good hands, and most importantly...was said to be one of the best blockers in the entire TE class. Not a home run hitter, but quick off the line and capable of producing the occasional big play. (Round 3-4)

Michael Allen, TE, Whitworth/DivIII - ( 6'6", 252) Freakish athlete. Has been clocked at 4.6 in the forty...which is cooking with gas for a man this size. Raw, but good enough to be invited to the combine. (Round 4-6)

Looks like the Bengals are intrested in his services...perhaps thats why Kelly hasen't been re-signed yet

Graham, who was made a captain in midseason, is likely to be the most sought after free agent tight end on a market that will also include San Francisco’s Eric Johnson and Seattle’s Jerramy Stevens. The Bengals are said to be very interested in Graham’s services.

I've seen a couple reports that have Graham ticketed to Denver. True or not, tho, there will be interest in him around the league and we know the bengals don't do bidding wars. Still, would be nice. Would finally give us a long-needed "complete" TE, and would remove any temptation to grab Greg Olsen or Zach Miller in the draft.

From the Boston Herald:

But even with the stats falling, a closer look showed a more sure-handed player who made plays when given the opportunity. Because of his value as one of the best blocking tight ends in the game, Graham was often called on to stay in to protect in the passing game.

Mills intimated that Graham’s fine with that, but also has a desire to show his wares as a receiver.

“He would probably like to be involved in that way,” Mills said. “But he’s pretty much a team guy. Most tight ends like to catch ball. Some can’t, but he can. He’s one of few that can both block the way he does and catch the ball.”

ESPN Radio apparently is reporting that the Broncos have signed tight end Daniel Graham to a contract including $10 million in guaranteed money.

Stay tuned.
