In one of hobsons recent articles he more or less said don't rule out Odell...

vs when stuff went down and hobson was acting like odell was alrdy cut.

Marvin has said all the right things to keep the Odell thing very much in question, but the further we dig into the offseason, the less certain I am he won't be back. The only thing in my mind that would have been holding him back were reports that he hadn't been keeping in the right shape. I've yet to see such reports from any official source though, and if he is in the physical condition to play NFL football... I think he will, any Marvin/Odell drama aside.

I still doubt it. Odell is one foulup away from the CFL. And if there's one thing he's taught the club, it's that he's unreliable. Add to that that, per da site, the Bengals have Goodell up their arse, and there's even talk of the front office instituting team fines for bad behavior...no.

You can argue over whether it's justified or whether Odell's getting the shaft, but either way he's got "sacrifical lamb" written all over him.

He does appear to be the likely candidate for such an honor, but I'm not convinced Marvin cares much for appeasing fans, Mike Brown, or even Roger Goodell when it causes potential harm to his own team.

It is certainly true, however, that Odell has run out of chances, and the uncertainty surrounding his future in the NFL might be enough to keep him off the team.

98 tackles 9 forced turnovers 5 int's, 4 f/f, 4 passes defended, 1td, 1.5 sacks. odell is the only proven play-maker we have on defense. if he keeps his nose clean then he has paid his dues and should be playing for us next season. if not he will play some where next season. but if he is going to be cut traded or what ever then they should do it soon. i would hate to see him go get his act together and become a probowler for another team.

One more infraction and Odell is banned for life. I can't see the Bengals taking that risk. They couldn't bear the embarassment. Let him be somebody else's problem.

I know the case can be made that they missed his playmaking ablility but the Bengals still managed to be that close to making the playoffs without him. I think the loss of Pollack hurt just as much. I think he was ready to have a good year after showing signs of "getting it" at the end of '05.

This is really simple. Odell has NEVER, first, last or ever, expressed any remorse or regret for his actions.

Simply put, he hasn't bottomed out and doesn't want to change his behavior.

Until this happens, he is of ABSOLUTELY no use to the Bengals, his family, his friends or himself.

There's no risk. Play him, and do so because he's better than anyone else on the roster. If he backslides and gets banned....the ultimate decision is made for you.

But let's remind the hand-wringers amongst us that when you're debating the embarrassment factor the problem is never solved precisely because so many of you are eager to embrace in feelings of embarrassment and guilt. Cutting Odell won't change your strange and perverse desires and it's fairly certain that you'll wallow in embarrassment no matter what decision is made.

:sure:

I can understand cutting Odell because of the risk of league ban, but I agree that embarassment isn't a factor at all. It shouldn't be either. Of all people, Marvin Lewis is the last guy to give a rat's butt about that.

I doubt the Bengals do get rid of him for that reason alone, but having a constant question mark playing arguably the most important defensive position on the field can be a bit worrisome. If he does have any tackles left in him, however, I'd imagine the Bengals will want him to make them with a striped helmet on his head.

There's no risk. Play him

Naah, there's plenty of risk in bringing him back in

First off, management risks coming off with the message "It's OK if you do drugs. We'll take you back in a jif, as soon as you do your suspension" and thus damaging the rest of the team

Second, any practice time Odell is given eats into the practice time that woudl go to his replacement. If you are 100% certain he' won't last the year, cut or trade him, and spend the money and time on developing his replacement

Third, Odell drags teammates along with him, pulling them into his world of substance abuse. You don't need a bad player creating bad situations for you other players.

Finally, Marvin has made it clear he's DONE with this fellow. If management says "no, you have to take him back" they stand to severely alienate Marvin.

Nfl player doing drugs? OHNOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Difference between Odell and most nfl players who drugs is he's stupid and doesn't know how to avoid it...How many times has randy Moss been suspended? We know henrys smoking yet he was passing his tests.

someone just needs teach odell how to pass the test and do it at home ^_^

And if we had any reason to believe Marvin, I'd agree. I just don't buy it. If Marvin really had made that decision so long ago, I doubt he'd have been so clear cut about it. It's just not his way of business.

We're not supposed to know what he's doing, and hence Odell's status remains in question despite Marvin's hinting otherwise.

You obviously dont understand the NFL policies, neither Marvin, nor any other Bengals official can officially cut Odell now, without having a grievance filed with the NFL players association. However, when his suspension is up, they can cut him if his abilities have diminished, or just cut him and "say" that its because of his physical shape/playing ability.

At this point, they can say he will, or wont be back, but until his suspension is lifted, they cannot officially do anything without facing actions from the NFL, and the Players association.

Rather than sending the wrong message the entire off-season, Marvin's only choice at this point is to say that Odell is not in their plans, and just wait and see.

Precisely, they can say anything they want. Obviously they can't cut a player loose at any time, I'm well aware of that. My point is that Marvin won't necessarily go the direction he pointed us all in back when the Odell news was fresh. He never does.

Where does all of this Marvin said he was done with Odell come from?

What Marvin said was that Odell is not here and I will not talk about him.

He was not in Marvin's plans for '06 because he could not be.

He did not say that he was done with Odell forever.

Thank you, Marvin cant cut this man, hes one of the best rookie MLB to play the game(of course i may be over exagerating since im an odell fan) but still 5 INT's in his rookie year, and Marvin never once said Odell is cut, he simply said he didnt want to talk about him, if i was a head coach i wouldsnt want to either id be extremely frustrated about how one of our stars on our defense cant play. If the Bengals cut him id be extremely surprised, so untill he's removed from there roster or Marvin says Odell Thurman is cut from this organization Odell is a bengal.
