B24
RUMOR MILL: A popular rumor going through town: Lewis will leave the Bengals to replace Bill Cowher as Steelers coach.Cowher is expected to announce his retirement after the season finale Sunday in Cincinnati. The Steelers were eliminated last week from playoff contention.Lewis is under contract with the Bengals through the 2010 season but was a member of Cowher's first Steelers staff (1992-95) as linebackers coach. Lewis also is a Pittsburgh native.Popular rumor? First I've heard of this. Is this actually the talk going on in Cincy or is Curnutte just starting this rumor himself? There is no way the Bengals let Marvin out of his contract to coach the Steelers. Stupid rumor.Source: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art.../612300330/1066

duus
Yeah, right. Just imagine what the Bengals would require from the Steelers to do such a thing. Let's see, the Bengals (as the rumor goes) have the coach the Steelers want. They have him under contract for another 3 years. The Steelers are the Bengals division rival. Yeah, so the Bengals let him go. Uh huh. If such a idiotic rumor was ever true, the Bengals hold all the cards and would demand a price that the Steeler organization has never been willing to pay. Not a chance. That said, although I would never want it to occur, if it did, the return the Bengals would get would be incredible. I could see it now ... Bengals lose the headcoach, but get a 1st, 3rd, and 5th round pick for the next two years. It would take something that radical. Not happenin'. duus
What I love about the Steeler situation is that (IMO) they are in a no win situation. Cowher retires, and what do they do? Hire from within? Let's assume LeBeau does not want the position (in fact, I wonder if he retires as well if Cowher does). That leaves Grimm and Whisenhunt. If they promote from within, then the other will not be happy and will likely leave. Whoever remains will surely not be good. I fully expect both of these guys to be coordinator/coach material only, and will fail bigtime as headcoach (see Mularkey, LeBeau, Capers, etc.). Similarly, if they hire from the outside, then both of these guys are looking elsewhere. Anyway you look at it, the team is screwed. They will be in a mess for at least a couple years. I'm counting on it. It'll happen. Who would have thought I would ever be thanking Cowher for messing up the Steelers. Su-weet.
GregCook
Strange things happen in the NFL. This wouldn't surprise me at all. From Marvin's point of view, lets say he takes over Pittsbuggers. They are only one year away from the SB with some damn good players. Bet yah he has them in another SB in two years. If he stays with the Bengals, he has a good team, but so far no sign of greatness with not one player a dominate force on the team. NFL coaches live and die for playoff success and Pittsbuggers have a long track record of playoff appearances. I'm sure Mike Brown would demand serious compensation, first round picks and second round picks and maybe a player or two as well. It could be worked out, especially if the Bengals beat the Squealers tomorrow.
Stripes
How quickly would Marvin Lewis go from one of Cincinnati's most beloved to it's most villified?I'd estimate there's less than a 0.03% probability this actually comes to pass though. Marvin has a good thing going here (whether people choose to see that or not), and the Steelers would never be willing to pay the price he'd cost in trade material. Didn't the NFL put the kibosh on that in the wake of the Herm Edwards mess?

HoosierCat
My bad, it was in '03 after the Gruden mess...http://www.sptimes.com/2003/01/17/Bucs/NFL...aft_picks.shtmlAt the very least they cannot trade draft picks for a head coach. ShulaSteakhouse
Knowing Mike Brown, he will let Lewis do whatever he wants to at this point, just like he did with Boomer. And if Marvin really would rather be in Pittsburgh, then good riddance. But yes there's probably about a .003% chance of this happening at this point. GregCook
If Marvin went to Brown and said he wants out, then a deal would be made and Brown would get serious compensation. Why would Brown want a coach that wants out? I hope Marvin stays in Cincy for another 10 years and wins a couple SB's. But nothing surprises me in the NFL. delhole
PEOPLE PLEASE! Listen to yourselves. Your actually considering this a possibility? Our savior, Marvin Lewis, going to our arch-rivals the Pissburgh Squeelers? Even if your doubting it to give it a .003% chance is even to much. Never would this, could this, or will this happen. ML has planted a seed and he doesn't strike me as the type of guy to bail out before it produces. Kill this topic for the love of all that is orange and black! jonahdsage
i threw up in my mouth just from reading the subject line of this thread. If marvin lewis ever went to the steelers i would give up on professional football. is this a real thread even? i'm awake at 5am so maybe i'm not thinking straight -- marvin lewis wouldn't be able to show his face in cincinnati. i'm disgusted, shocked, and sick to my stomach that this is a thread here. my goodness
