A Note to the Overreactors

The Colts were a wounded and embarrased team playing at home and looking to prove themselves. Add in national TV and a jazzed up crowd (and, as it turns out, a turdtacular gameplan) and that was NOT a game the Bengals had good odds in winning.

In the grand scheme, no biggie. They need to move on, learn from it, and get ready for Denver. For all the shots at the defense on this board last night, do remember that Peyton Manning isn't half bad, and, to exacerbate the problem, they put in a gameplan that basically allowed him to pitch and catch all night. So, he found a comfort zone.

To sum up, not a game that set up well for the Bengals at all, made worse by a horrendous offensive and defensive gameplan.

But now they get to fix it in Denver. Hopefully they will come with more focus and a gameplan that makes Denver adjust to them rather than vice versa.

Still, context and reflection, people. It will help sooth the irritation. 8-6 and control their destiny. If Willie can go, they have a good shot at this. Let's just hope they don't take the ball out of Carson's hands next Sunday like their gameplan called for last night...

I hear ya man, but they will face worse in Denver. Two teams battling for playoff position, in pretty much an elimination game. A short week of rest, and a trip to the mile high city, where most of the team has never played. It's going to be difficult, and sooner or later the Bengals are going to have to win one of these games when the odds are not in their favor.

I was disappointed last night, because Marvin and Co. said this is a playoff game, well good teams make the playoffs and you are going to have to bring it each and every game to get to that next level. That means the intensity has to pick up, the coaching has to pick up and the focus has to pick up. The Bengals may be physically playoff caliber, but are they mentally...I know for a fact we will find out this week.

Who knows, they may get a chance to redeem themselves in 3 weeks right back at the dome in Indy on wild card weekend.

We'll see I guess. Could use Levi back also - Whitworth and Guy-chick looked like the deer-in-the-headlights defense all night.

At one point I laughed that they had Wright warming up because Carson was getting killed on every passing down it seemed.

This is exactly the type of situation the Bengals' will face 3 weeks in a row if they want to go to a Superbowl.

I don't see them as a team that can handle that. They seem to lose their confidence easily and their coaches seem a bit clueless.

My only major complaint last night was the defensive gameplan. I'll be fuming about that for the rest of the season. But we move on. The Bengals still have realistic clinching scenarios next week, and I like our chances against Denver much more than I did Indy.

If I saw them catch another ball with no one within 15 yards I was going to puke. That gameplan , offensively and defensively, was crap....

And that happens. What pisses me off was the inability, unwillingness, or whatever to *change* the gameplan when it clearly ain't working. Like late 3rd/early 4th when the sideline reporter said Chuck was begging the defensive players that if they just stuck to the plan that it could work. No, Chuck. It couldn't. And the reason is because the pass coverage was playing soft and you weren't blitzing. As a result, Peyton had years to sit back and tear the D apart. As he is well known for being able to do.

My thoughts on the gameplan are this:

The zone cover 2 was designed to slow down Peyton and keep him underneath, which it did.

BUT, the success of the defensive gameplan was predicated on offensive success and putting points on the scoreboard, which we did not. had we put points on the board with long drives, then Peyton gets fewer possessions and puts up fewer points. ANd possibly starts to try to press and maybe make a mistake or two.

Now, having said that, we needed to adjust and get more aggressive mid way through the 3rd quarter and try to make something happen.

Oh, and by the way, we can clinch with a win at Denver and a Jets loss. ;)

So no need to overreact. :D

We'll still get into the playoffs regardless, imo. This game shows me no reason why we can't win our last two games and get in. However, what did disapoint me about this game was that I was hoping, not expecting, but hoping our defense would prove its turned the corner and prove its good enough for a Super Bowl run, and what I saw last night was that its no where near good enough for a Super Bowl run.

Against a top-offense like Indy, our defense will be as good as our offense allows them to be. If we score first, I think this game looks completely different on both sides of the ball.

OK, I can take solice in the fact we are still one of the wildcard teams "IF" the season ends "TODAY"... However, this goes back to what I was saying in the thread about how happy everyone is with our defense. As mentioned in this or another thread, the cover 2 was to keep Manning from going crazy long, which they stated it did. Well, what the hell happened after that ?? There's is no way I can say I'm happy with the defense and if we play like that either Denver or Pitt, it's over !!!

The offense had it's fair share of problems and injuries never help, but the question I pose is, are we still happy with the defense ?? I for one, never was !!! Call me disappointed... Don't give me all the crap about why the Colts had such great odds on winning either, as I call BULLSH*T !!! The Bengals played like a team uninspired at best and deserved the beating they took. They are a better team than what I saw yesterday and I hope they don't take these last two lightly, because they need them both !!!

Coming home in 3 days and happy as hell !!! Take care all !!!

WHODEY !!!

Reacting to Blind Homers,

Our D has not stopped the Patriots, Colts, Chargers or Ravens (the current AFC division leaders/champs), what the hell am I overreacting too?!!

Holding the Ravens to 7 points procured in garbage times is a stop to me. As for the others, well, the offense didn`t show up against the Patriots or Colts.... so it is hard to make it all out on the defense.

Wouldn`t it be nice if we COULD win games 20 - 10 most weeks, though? I expected those types of scores with Marvin as the head coach....

I agree with you about the defense but I'm more upset about the lack of performance by the offense. I didn't think for one second that our defense (even though it has played well lately) would keep Indy under 28 points. However, I assumed that our offense would dictate to their defense and put up 35 or so. <_<

Forget about the past!We have to beat the BRONCO'S!!!Quit crying about what we did and think about the future!

Some fallout due to that dismal performance was expected and certainly understandable. I say give everyone 2 days to vent and get it out of their system and then-like you said focus on Denver. The 2 days are almost up. Let's go ride those ponies!!!!!!!
