jditty47 Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 The bengals biggest problem and most glaring weakness is none other than our return game. Kick and punt. We are ranked 30th and 28th respectively. That is pathetic, but injuries have devastated our return game. Hopefully green can possibly give us a spark (i actually like him and he killed it in their championship game at lsu), but i honestly doubt he will. Nothing has worked, we've thrown a slew of different guys back there and none of them can make an impact. Could you imagine if we had a good return game for our offense? forgetaboutit. I dont know what we'll do next year even though it does look brighter just like this year with chatman and tab perry coming back from injuries. The only good thing i can honestly say about our return game is that they dont turn the ball over atleast. Quote

Kazkal Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 I miss tab him dragging ike 30 yards still replays in my head everytime someone returns for us.Wont happen anymore sense chinadoll broke again./ Quote
membengal Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 Tab Perry's absence this year has been huge in terms of the kick return game. Not much other analysis needed for why those numbers are off... Quote
Italian fan Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 Glenn Holt is quite good as kick returner, last week he returned 2 for 30 or more yards. Ratliff is below average but he doesn't fumble. Quote

I just want a guy who knows when to fair catch and when not to, and doesn't fumble. Oh, and I'd rather have a straight-ahead runner who doesn't dance all day and reverse direction, which avoids clipping/holding calls. Basically, don't screw the offense.I'm fine with running straight ahead for 5 yards on most punt returns. Kick returns you can usually do a little better, could use Tab for sure. Quote

Nothing makes me crazier then when the guy catches the ball and then dances in place while the defenders swarm down to him, instead of just running ahead, taking the five yards, and hoping the first guy misses. As to the punt/kick stats, yeah, I can't get too worked up over them, either. The difference between being where we are and being in the top 10 in either category is only about 3 yards a return. princeton Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 our biggest problem remains stopping the running game Quote
Stripes Posted December 16, 2006 Report Posted December 16, 2006 our biggest problem remains stopping the running gameI disagree. With backup linebackers galore, the Bengals have been pretty consistent stopping the run this season. The only really bad games that I can think of were the Steelers and Patriots games. The Chargers game is questionable.Stopping the pass, however... Quote

derekshank Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 Yeah... anyone who thinks that run defense is still our biggest problem hasn't been paying attention. We're in the top half in the league in run defense, and have allowed only 6 runs of more than 20 yards.Pass defense... we're ranked dead last, and opposing QB's are completing almost 62% of the passes against us. That's terrible. (This is why the Peyton Manning match-up doesn't look very attractive to me). Quote

Perhaps. I want to win the Superbowl, and I think that is more than doable with the last ranked punt return team. I like a nice kick return, but Glenn Holt has looked great there, and Tab is already the man. Quote
Spor_tees Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 It's obvious the Bengals biggest problem is stopping teams on third and long (7+ yards) from getting first downs. I swear that is the most frustrating thing when watching a Bengals game...you expect them to stop a team and get the ball back and then all of a sudden a guy gets wide open and BAM! first down. Makes me want to jump off my balcony. Quote

Makes me want to jump off my balcony. That's certainly been a problem over the course of the season. I don't know if I'd call it our biggest problem. We've been much better the past several weeks as our guys are getting healthy, and used to playing as a unit... and we aren't ranked near the bottom of the league in 3rd down conversions... so I have trouble calling it our "biggest problem", but I might have agreed with you if you had made this post after the Falcons game. jditty47 Posted December 17, 2006 Author Report Posted December 17, 2006 none of the things u have brought up is as bad as our return game. stopping the run? ya weve done that a few times. Stopped ppl on 3rd and long? ya done that a few times too. How about stopping the pass? ya a few times as well. whats my point? WE NEVER RETURN THE BALL WELL. we've had one meaningful return by ratliff all season, nothing really on kick return. That does not help our defense or our offense. Holt is solid but not great, hes not a returner. Get green in there and hope and pray, but i doubt we do anything for the remainder of the season unless somebody starts takin some steroids. Seriously our return game sucks and its pathetic to watch knowing we wont get past the 30 on a kick return EVEN IF THE OTHER TEAM KICKS IT ONLY TO THE 10!!! Quote
kentjett Posted December 17, 2006 Report Posted December 17, 2006 Skyler Green will make a huge impact. He has been returning punts his entire career. He doesn't have to learn much inorder to field punts. He should be ready on monday. Quote

The Chargers game is questionable.and who will we facing in the playoffs? Ravens runners we can stop, I grant you. But those others are problematic. Steelers are probably out of playoffs but maybe not. Patriots, Chargers (gave up an embarassing run total to a team that had to throw), maybe Jags who just gouged us on the ground a year ago. And we'll get a good read on Colts tonightUntil we shut down the running games of top teams like that, I won't be sweating the return game at all. Quote
TJJackson Posted December 18, 2006 Report Posted December 18, 2006 I'd say pass rush (lack thereof) is the biggest problem of several we have right now Quote
