He has really improved against the run, too. He's always been a good pass rusher but he's really impressed me against the run. He's turning out to be a great D-End

Mistake by making him the starter? I could have swore the mistake was having him gain 15 lbs and play DT on passiong downs.when he was actually getting to play end I was fine with him in 2005....but they wanted to get pollack in anyways possible.

Justin falls short again for double digit sacks? ;) looks like he wont be as $$$ as we thought.

Can someone tell me why we did not draft UC product, Trent Cole? Just like Jason Fabini, we can't seem to see what is good in our own back yard?

Yep, I would take Jumpy Jr over Justin. Justin has not learned any pass rush moves, doesn't spin, or club, doesn't use the swim move much either........not sure why.??

Smith was a beast today all day. Still don't know what he has to do to get some love around here.

Regardless, with those two, and Adams now looking healthier (damn fine play on that 4th and 1), the d-line is actually no longer a weakness. Helps a ton as we approach each week...

Speaking of beasts, its nice to get this kind of praise from the Raiders defense....

"That offense is loaded," said cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who had two interceptions. "When you call a man-to-man defense, they start throwing the ball all over the place. And the right side of that line is just a bunch of beasts. They know what they want to do."

The funny thing is...Justin Smith is on pace to make the pro bowl at the moment and he's getting outsacked by a non-starter.

we need to re-sign this guy. He is the pass-rusher we have been looking for some time.

DUH.........I've been saying that since the first game when he looked a lot more like the pass rusher he was a rookie(lighter, faster) when everybody was crying that we had to re-sign Smith no matter the cost, we had to re-sign Steinbach, blah, blah, blah. Honestly, I couldnt see them paying the money they wanted.

Had they had contract talks with Geathers when I wanted them to at the beginning of the season, He would have been a HELL of a lot cheaper!!! Keep in mind that the Guy is ONLY 23 years old, and not even in his "prime" yet.

NO, the funny(or ridiculous) thing is.......GEATHERS ISNT EVEN ON THE PRO BOWL BALLOT !!!!!!!!

Geathers isn't going anywhere. Hes an RFA, he'll be given the top-tier tender, so if anyone were to sign him to an offer sheet, the Bengals have the choice of matching or receiving that teams 1st and 3rd round picks as compensation. No one is going to fork that over for a situational pass rusher. And as such he won't command that big a contract. He'll get a nice payday.

I'd like to believe that, but c'mon Teams overpay all the time, people like Grant Wistrom get $40 million contracts, remember, the NFL doesnt have guaranteed contracts, so aside from a salary cap hit, a desperate team can do almost anything.

By the way, I've also seen many times where teams will make an offer waaay above market, knowing that the other team doesnt want to lose its player, and in turn ends up matching a ridiculous offer, screwing themselves (cap-wise) in the process.

Let them make a nutty offer. I'll happily take their 1st and 3rd round picks. But of course that isn't going to happen. No team is going to give $40 million and two day 1 picks for Geathers. The team will give him the top RFA tender, just like they did with Rudi, and they'll make a deal eventually, just like they did with Rudi.

Related note from Czarnecki's blog over at fox sports re: cap space for 2007.

San Francisco owner John York's austerity plan has worked wonders, and the 49ers top the list with $41.78 million to spend. After years of salary-cap hell, the Tennessee Titans are next with $39.9 million under next season's cap. This is great news for Fisher, who can pursue some of the league's best free agents. There are 20 teams with about $20 million or more to spend if they choose to do so. Here are the rest of the top ten teams: 3. Buffalo $37.86 million, 4. Arizona $35.2 million, 5. Cleveland $31.9 million, 6. Minnesota $31.5 million, 7. Jacksonville $31 million, 8. Cincinnati $28.8 million, 9. Green Bay $28.36 million and 10. New England $$26.98 million.

Before they make any cuts or re-do some salaries, the Washington Redskins have the least amount of money, $878,730. Amazingly, the Pittsburgh Steelers are next with $1.44 million of cap space.

So, Cincy is up in the top 10 teams in terms of cap space, so the team is in good shape in any bidding wars. Of course, that $28.8 million figure has yet to be Hobsonized. So cull $3 million or so for rooks, and $3 million or so for an injury reserve. And then there are the RFA tenders: Geathers, The Dancing Bear, Landon, Caleb, Kyle Larson, Shaun Smith plus a few others. I don't know what the exact amount will be here but I'll throw out $7 million as a wild guess. So that cuts the cap space down to $15.8 million or so. Expect most of that to be spent on our own guys, like Geathers, K2, Justin or Steinbach, etc. (there's a list here: http://www.theredzone.org/2007/freeagents/...sp?Team=Bengals )

By the way, for those of you who continue to ignore what a complete defensive end Justin Smith is (while pumping up Geathers' sack stats against Smith's), do note this criticism from the Indy Star this morning as their town goes in full meltdown mode over what happened in Jax yesterday:

"But let's be clear about this: There are a lot of Colts players, a lot, who have seen quite enough of this defensive approach and would love for Dungy to seize the reins of this fading football team. Fans and media types aren't the only ones who don't understand why the Colts defensive ends line up so far apart you need a bus transfer to get from Dwight Freeney to Robert Mathis. Or why it is that on every down, running or passing downs, those two are flying upfield like their pants are on fire, usually running past the play and exposing their undersized linebackers to situations they clearly can't handle."

There is more to playing end than sacks. Smith does it all, and does it all well. Geathers is developing into an all-down guy too, but for now is a specialist. Which is fine, and has its place. We have had way too few sack guys over the years on this team. But there is no need to run down Smith in the push to praise Geathers. None.
