ChadJohnson-85
You all think Smith or Geathers could get their first Pro Bowl in 07?http://www.nfl.com/stats/leaders/NFL/SCKS/2006/regularhttp://www.nfl.com/stats/leaders/AFC/SCKS/2006/regular
bengal4life
If one had to choose between the two and not both of them, it would definetily be Smith "since(for you Tasher) " he's in on all three downs and Geathers only plays on rushing downs. DesperateDerelict
Regardless of your over-all play, if you get a certain number of sacks, you're Hawaii-bound. I think the number this year will be pretty high - maybe 14 or 15.USELESS FACT: Dwight Feeney's 2006 sack total YTD: ( 0 )

ShulaSteakhouse
Yeah that'll price Justin out of town - which doesn't bother me necessarily. Although I would rather use a 1st round pick on an 0-lineman or LB than a DE if possible, to replace him.I could care less who does or doesn't make the pro bowl, completely meaningless other than for cap/salary reasons. bengalboomer7
Justin for sure has the better chance. I agree with Shula, this will price him out, and it doesn't bother me

membengal
Obliged to respond on behalf of Justin:It won't price him out if the Bengals don't want it to, and this kind of season has always been possible from him if they had given even a smidgen of help before now. Even without help, he has been a damn fine lineman against the run and rushing the passer. You who are now dismissing what he is getting done continue to undervalue him, and you always have. SkinneymulleT
Justin has one move, but its a "dam" good one. He is one of the few DE in the NFL that plays hard every play and is great on backside pursuit against the run, as well as holding the POA when teams run at him. Although I am hopefull he will be resigned, IMO he will be nearly impossible to sign after this year with his numbers. Any guesses on sack totals? Ill go with 13. Geathers 10. But not enough for either to get probowl recognition. DE's usually need one good sack year to get noticed and then 2nd year get the nod. BTW, anyone think JT should have gotten a half for the end of game sack, it appeared they both made contact before he hit the ground. Stripes
Calling the #4 pick in his draft solid but not spectacular isn't undervaluing him, it's telling the truth I'd agree with "solid, but not spectacular," but does his draft position really even matter now? I've never understood that. He is what he is, regardless of where he was drafted five years ago. He's a good player. That's what we want, right? HairOnFire
Justin for sure has the better chance. I agree with Shula, this will price him out, and it doesn't bother me So this team can only afford DE's that aren't worthy of Pro Bowl consideration? Once they start producing sacks we've got to let them go elsewhere? Damn, the Bengals will never build a quality defense at this rate. bengalboomer7
It completely depends on what kind of money justin asks for. I don't think I'd get any argument saying the guy is worth franchise top 5 DE money, right? I also don't believe he's worth transition top 10 money. The problem is, he'll get top 10 money in FA. Too bad Fanene is on PUP, I'd like to know whether Fanene or Rucker can be a viable replacement
BengalChamps
Typical "Salary Drive" year for Justin. He will price himself out of Cincy. For the record, neither will make it. Players from a #25 ranked D just do not make the Pro-Bowl.

Any deal Justin signs this offseason will seem like an absolute bargain in two or three years. As for the actual money paid, if it falls in the 5-6 million dollar per season range then I can make an easy argument that he's well worth that type of money as that's exactly the same market price paid to Justin Smith clone Grant Wistrom several seasons ago. All things considered...we're not talking about the 8.5/9.0 million per that's being paid to the elite DE's, are we? BTW, recently there has been a wave of 5-year contract extensions signed by veterans who were headed into free agency after this season. If this franchise is serious about building a quality defense then Justin Smith needs to be the next veteran to surf that wave. Reward him now...before the end of the season draws near. derekshank
I'm not sure why we think we won't pay him what he earns. We are almost $6 mil under the cap... the cap continues to grow next year... we all complain that we don't spend money on the defense... all of this indicates that he's a great guy to re-sign.
