BENGALS BRING IN WARRICK FOR TRY-OUT - merged

BULLDOGG

Recommended Posts

It is being reported on the Bengals.com website the Cincinnati is bringing in Peter Warrick for a tryout. I think that this is a good move to try to shore up the reciving core that has been decimated by injuries and suspensions, with a another possible Henry suspension looming. P-Dub was a every effective 3rd down receiver, and operated well in the slot. I think he would be an upgrade over the current receivers on the depth chart after Henry. My hope is that Cincinnati signs Pete and waives Kelley, who has been a disappointment in my opinion, although he has been solid on "teams" this year. He is not a consistent enough threat between the 20's and has inconsistent hands, although he's been decent in the red zone. Warrick also gives us an added dimension in the return game, having returned the last two Bengals punts that went for scores. I think a 3rd down, 4 receiver set later in the season with Chad, T.J., Henry, Warrick and Perry in the backfield would be UNSTOPPABLE! Also, he knows Brat's offense, so he may be able to help right away, if he is in "football shape". He certainly has to be more valuable at this point that Glen Holt and Reggie McNeal and could be signed for the veteran minimum. I think this has to be a no-brainer for the Bengals personnel decision-makers.

P Dub has been one of my fav's for years. Hopefully he can turn it around and be productive. I'm kicking myself in the arse now b/c I recently cut the "Warrick" off the back of my #80 Jersey to try and put my own name on it. DAMN IT!!! The damn thing was brand new, I bought it the year we let him go.

Oh for f**kssake, please, everyone, don't hear Warrick and think of him in his Florida State days. That knee makes him marginal at best. And, if ML is considering Warrick over, say Henry for playing time, then I guess we all know how Henry is viewed by ML at this point. Henry needs to play.

I very much doubt he ends up on this team. Despite the problems of our WR depth right now, he's just another injured player. He won't be as good as Chatman, even though Chatman is clearly not healthy. To even put him in the same breath with Kelly Washington is laughable.

The only reason you bring him on this team is because we have so many players than can't go right now... and there is the possibility that Warrick is a better option than either McNeal or Holt... but he'll be nothing more than that. Even if he does somehow make the team (which I doubt) he won't play.

sounds like KW will be out a while and they are expecting Henry might be suspended again etc...,

I don't have a problem with Chatman - he's doing just fine. Not sure why people are complaining about him exactly - but he's gimpy too.

I don't really understand Warrick's situation - if it's a matter of time until his knee gets back to normal or what - or as most figure - it's degenerative and never going to heal and let him do what he used to.

You never know. It could be a Trotter situation.

Before he (P-Dub) was getting paid no matter what, now he really has to go out there and work hard to regain his role in an offense and re-establish himself back in the Bengals line up, only for a lot less cash...all adds up to more motivation!

Trotter didn't leave philly originally due to a degenerative knee...

I can`t find this Warrick try-out anywhere on Bengals.com.

It's buried in the this story:

http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=5612

The relevant piece:

P.DUB GETS LOOK: The Bengals are apparently concerned enough with their banged-up wide receiver corps that they are bringing in former first-rounder Peter Warrick for a tryout.

Reached late Monday night via phone, Warrick said this will be his second workout since being released from Seattle after the final preseason game.

“I feel good," said Warrick, who has also worked out for Detroit. "I’ve been working out; I still think I can help. It’s tough sitting and watching. You hope no one gets hurt, but that’s what I’ve had to look for.”

Warrick, 29, the fourth player selected in the 2000 draft, visited the Bengals at their hotel when they were in Tampa last week and went to the game. He said he has been working out with trainer Tom Shaw in his native Florida, but he wasn’t too sure about the Bengals injury situation behind Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

On Monday, head coach Marvin Lewis already ruled out Kelley Washington (hamstring) for Sunday’s game with the Falcons and he revealed Antonio Chatman is nursing an abdominal strain. Chatman is listed as probable, but he’s expected to be limited in practice. Tab Perry (hip) was placed on season-ending injured reserve last week.

Plus, while Chris Henry is eligible to return this week, Lewis said he has yet to decide if he’ll activate him for the game following his two-game suspension for violating various NFL policies.

The Bengals have a roster exemption for Henry this week, which means he can practice without the team making a roster move. But if they want him to play against the Falcons they have to make room for him on the roster.

Henry hasn’t played since catching two touchdowns against the Steelers Sept. 24. In his three games he caught 11 balls for 177 yards and his 16.1 yards per catch leads all Bengals with at last six catches.

“He could be (inactive) and on our team,” Lewis said. “What’s best for our team.”

Even before Chatman got hurt Sunday returning a kick in the 17-14 victory over Carolina, the Bengals suited up rookie free agent Glenn Holt off the practice squad and he performed well in his first NFL game on special teams.

In response on Sunday, Lewis said the Bengals had to adjust and that’s why the tight ends combined for five catches.

“We kept tight ends on the field more than we have in the past, particularly on third down and early downs,” Lewis said. “Normally, it could have been a receiver in that position."

It was his own injury that cut short Warrick’s career in Cincinnati after the best season of his pro career. Opting to play in the 2003 regular-season finale nine days after arthroscopic knee surgery, he finished with career-highs of 79 catches for 819 yards and seven touchdowns.

But complications from the surgery and his rehab limited him to just four games in 2004 and an abbreviated training camp in 2005. Also, the emergence of Houshmandzadeh and the drafting of Henry and Perry spelled the end in Cincinnati.

The landscape has changed dramatically changed since Warrick left. Feeling he was a starting receiver, Warrick had lobbied for the Bengals to release him before the final cutdown and they did.

But despite returning punts for Seattle in the Super Bowl, he could never secure a regular situation with the Seahawks. He indicated Monday he knows his role would be different than the first time around here, and said he knows he’ll have to show the Bengals that he hasn’t lost any speed.

“Whatever they need me to do, and I can return punts,” said Warrick, who returned 54 during his career here that included two for touchdowns.

Chatman has struggled himself with injuries since coming over from Green Bay as a free agent and didn’t appear until the fourth game of the season as he recovered from a groin problem that plagued him in camp. On Sunday he returned four punts for 24 yards and two kicks for 43 yards.

Warrick is 12th on the club's all-time receiving list with 264 catches, one more than Dan Ross. But not for long. Houshmandzadeh, the man who replaced Warrick in the starting lineup, has 243.

I've always felt bad for that guy. I know he got paid and all that, but he is still a guy with pride. He did get hurt, and TJ swooped in. Which was well deserved. If he can play bring him in. Chatman isn't cutting it, and you can't count on Henry.

You can too count on Henry. You count on him to fu*k up and get in trouble over and over again.

:o mybe they won't activate henry

He won't be as good as Chatman

Has chatman even shown us anything to be consired good? hes banged up too (marvin said he'll get limited playing time) he was a 5th string wr who wasen't even wanted with their crappy depth.

If what he did with punt returns last week was not good then what ratliff has been doing for 2 years must be :puke:

Even assuming the workout went well, I wouldn't expect Warrick to be signed unless Chatman continues to crumble (which, unfotunately, appears all too possible). But contingency planning dictates the Bengals explore some options -- the Pats do this sort of thing almost weekly -- and Warrick makes a good deal of sense. If needed, he could slip seamlesly back into the offense as both punt returner and 4th wideout in 4 WR sets.

I'd like to see Warrick come back & at least take some punt returns if Chatman ain't ready to go sunday. But if Chatman is ready to go & Henry comes back do you all think we'll keep Warrick anyway?

As far as I know, they didn't sign him, just had him in for a workout. IF Chatman worsens during the week (or down the road), I could see them pulling the trigger.

Like I said before, the Pats do this all the time. Watch the kffl hotwire feed and every week or three you will see

Patriots | Patriots Work Out WR G. I Thuoghthewasdead

Patriots | Patriots Work Out LB Ahneeda Paycheck

Patriots | Patriots Work Out S Ima Scrub

...and so on. It's one of the ways they work their magic with backups; if they are weak at a position tey have a list of guys who have been in in the last few weeks they can sign if needed. hey did this with Hank Poteat, who they brought in just before our game with them, and who proceeeded to help them chop us up. he then got chopped himself a few days later.

Personally, I think they ought to be bringing in more guys for workouts.
