Just wondering, what's it going to take for Jack Nicholson to see some playing time?

Guess everyone is now glad that Caleb Miller hung around through the injuries, huh? Depth is never a bad thing...

No, it isn't. But we really dont have it at LB right now. We're down to our depth, and any more injuries would really start to hurt.

No question, but there was a lot of anger directed toward Caleb Miller by Bengals fans over the last few years, but now we look up and here he is, ready to at least step in and plug a hole, and do so with three years in the system to draw upon. Bengals do not usually have the luxury of a guy like Miller to plug in.

So...we hold our breath, hope he can put his finger in the hole in the dam, and get us through to the bye. But at least he is there for that, which is nice.

Ready or not, looks like Ahmad will get some reps. As some else mentioned around here, I hope he does better than he did on the goal line play vs. Pitt...

Brooks on deck

Ready or not, here comes Ahmad Brooks.

Brooks, the subject of so much controversy when drafted in the third round of the July supplemental draft, has blended into the woodwork since the season began.

Until this week. With David Pollack and Odell Thurman out for the year, A.J. Nicholson (hamstring) out again this week, and Rashad Jeanty (foot) downgraded to doubtful Thursday, Brooks is just one of six healthy linebackers for Sunday’s game at Paul Brown Stadium against the Patriots.

And one of them, Andre Frazier, may not be active because he’s been here two days, and another, Marcus Wilkins, is known primarily as a special teams player and not a scrimmage player.

So with Caleb Miller probably starting in Jeanty’s place if he can’t go, the 6-3, 260-pound Brooks is looking at the most snaps of his NFL career.

“He’s progressing, but its time for him to step up,” said defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan after Thursday’s practice. “Everyone is going to have their role. We’ll see how the game plays out. It’s time for him to do that.”

Brooks, plagued by injuries and some off-field problems his last year at Virginia, has been a nice, yet raw, addition so far.

“He’s a very raw mental guy right now, but he just has to learn,” Bresnahan said. “He wasn’t in our offseason program and that set him back. He’s got the athletic ability, he’s got all the physical tools you need, he just has to know what to do, and do it fast. Don’t do it slow. Fast.”

Brooks came into camp as a middle backer, but he has been good enough to get work on the outside as well, and has been getting reps in Jeanty’s spot.

“He’ll be a very good outside backer,” Bresnahan said. “He’s got some good veterans around that can help him out.”

Brooks is going to have to supply some muscle against a very good New England running game that is still seventh in the NFL even though it rushed for just 50 yards in the 17-7 loss to Denver. Miller is about 20 pounds lighter than the 245-pound Jeanty, off a seven-tackle game in Pittsburgh, and Brooks is about 35 pounds heftier than Miller.

Caleb Miller deserved the heat he's gotten. He's been hurt so often that his play suffered everytime he seemed to be getting close. Now he's getting substantial reps as a roleplayer, and he's playing well. Well, guess what? Bengal fans have noticed and are quick to give him credit for the improvement....just as they've given credit for the improved play of Brian Simmons and John Thornton.

It's a different season so the grades have been different.

Bring on Ahmad. I assume he'll give up big plays due to his inexperience, but he should be a wrecking ball as a pass rusher.

Injuries are what they are, I don't tend to get mad at a player for being hurt. I am just glad he is still around to help. Many wanted him cut. I am with you on Ahmad...I still think a "kill the qb" instruction on third down and obvious pass situations would be well within his learning curve...

Caleb starts, Brooks gets "most snaps of his career"

Is it me or does the Bengals staff really like his upside? (DDN article this morning was gushing with his potential)

I fearlessly predict that after a year in the offseason program Brooks starts in the Pollack/Jeanty/Miller spot.

They better like his upside. Somebody burned a 3rd round pick from next year to get this malcontent whose own college coach wouldn't say anything nice about him.

Have to be somewhat patient though, he's in a similar position as Pollack was last year. Pollack held out, this guy's Supplemental, miss time either way.

Odell's an idiot

Caleb's doing very well actually IMO - really has improved since he bulked up.

Brooks is getting owned at the LOS too often run or pass. Just wonder what happened to the promising player we saw in the scrimmage during camp.

Wish AJ would get healthy, eager to see what he can do, but figure he won't be a factor until at least next season.

Remember, WaterBoy came on strong after he finally got healthy and had enough reps last year to make up for his missed time. Brooks is probably in the same boat, since he was a supplemental draft pick, missed nearly all the offseason workouts and has to be behind.

In camp, he was probably just playing and not thinking. Now in season, I'm pretty sure that he is trying to NOT MAKE MISTAKES, which means he is probably THINKING TOO MUCH, instead of PLAYING.

He will get better.

Besides, there is always NEXT YEAR, when we get WaterBoy and Cheech's little brother back! :P

At least all of these injuries are happening at the beginning of the season and not at the end. Guys can get healthy, or changes can made with enough time for guys to adjust.
