Browns' fans just aren't saints

Thursday, September 14, 2006

I am a New Orleans Saints fan who attended Sunday's Browns-Saints game. Jim Brown said before the kickoff that the Browns' fans were the best. Maybe the best of the worst.

I must say, I have never been treated as badly and felt as threatened as I did in Cleveland.

What is the problem with Browns fans?

After planning this trip, looking forward all summer to visiting a city I had never been and driving 18 hours, my friends and I had to leave before the end of the game because we feared for our safety after seeing the fights breaking out in the upper deck, being spit on and having beer thrown on us.

As a fan of the Saints, I know losing is very frustrating, but the visitors who come to cheer on their teams at the Louisiana Superdome will never be beaten with rawhide bones and cursed with foul and abusive language.

All Browns fans should be embarrassed by this type of behavior. Don't worry, you can have your Browns to yourselves, we will never come back.

I can attest that generally the people here in Northern Ohio just aren't very nice. I grew up in a small town about 50 miles down the river from Cincy (Ripley, OH) and I notice all kinds of small things/ For example, where I grew up you could be walking down the street, pass a complete stranger and at the very least you would say "Hello" to each other. When I do that up here(mansfield, OH) i often don't even get a response, and most times I don't even get acknowledged. And thsi town seems pretty split between Browns and Steelers fans, so NO ONE"S nice.

Cleveland is the armpit of the nation! ;)

Please dont group me in with Cleveland and NE Ohio, I am from NW Ohio and most people here are very freindly and would help a stranger in need at the drop of a hat.

Cleveland may not be the armpit of the nation but it is the armpit of Ohio.

I personally know a dozen Browns fans living here in NW Ohio. It seems that the closer you get to Browns stadium, the meaner the fans get. For once, I think its fun to actually give them crap for being at the bottom. Far too many years went by when I had to endure their crap. Now it's our turn (at least I'm alot nicer about it).

Let's not overgeneralize. Every team has fans like this...

You are absolutely correct, I'm sure we have some Bengals fans that would fit into this category. It's hard to believe that people would stoop to stupidity during a football game.

It's amazing what usually happens when there is a little bit of alcohol involved. Nine times out of ten that is the biggest culprit.

I live in Cleveland and I must say I'm a little surprised. I mean, there are stupid fans of every team who do things like this, but I go to different bars every week to watch games and always see Browns fans. Generally they are very tolerable and some even will say they are pulling for us to do better since they know how it feels to be stuck at the bottom of the barrel...and I, in turn, usually tell them that I don't mind the Browns winning when its not against us and I especially root for them to beat the Stoolers and Ratbirds. All in all, I have way more trouble with stupid loud Stooler fans who seem to want to get in your face every week. Especially since most bars have more Steeler fans than Browns fans in them anyway.

I guess its interesting to note that as the Browns fans think their team is getting better, they are becoming more obnoxious. We would do well to take away the message from this that even thogh we are now a good team, we fans do not need to be assh**es to other fans...except Steeler fans. :P

Word. Even us unfortunately. Remember...we're all football fans. We just happen to support different teams. A percentage of those people will not exactly make us proud, no matter which team they follow. Let's just try to keep the ones who practice good sportsmanship in the majority here. All it adds to this website here of ours is class.

Yo bro'....Welcome back!

I knew it wouldn't take you long to get back on-line!

I have to agree....

Remember my post from last year when I attended the Bengals' opener in Cleveland.

If I can find it, perhaps I will post it again as a reminder and supporting proof of these idiots.

Cleveland is a veritable vacuum of brain activity. They should just have the Inspector General make a declaration and pull the plug on that HOLE they call a city. Likewise in Pittsburgh. I can never understand how Pittsburgh people are so enamoured by their city. I hate even visiting the place. It's a hole as well. But! I hate to admit that when I attended a Bengals game there a few years ago, I was treated extremely well by an overwhelming good-natured crowd with very good sportsmanship....and they kicked our a$$ that year. I was very surprised. But the days of Bengals / Steelers fans being cordial to each other are DONE! I believe.....

Welcome back Billy!

Ya think? No, no, I think were talking about a whole new level of pond scum here, pal...

Wow....that is wrong and depressing on so many levels. :o

I can't believe this. What is this world coming to? That is just sad.

I don't even really enjoy going to games anymore just for the fact that there is always "that person" in the crowd somewhere next to me:

1) The one only there to start fights, 2) the obnoxious drunk or 3) Know it all wise guy

And I can justify paying as much as teams charge now a days to deal with them.

Thanks my younger brother, it's good to be back in here in "The 'Zone"

They'll be back I believe. Everything is cyclic. Now that Carson Palmer is back showing no real effects from the injury he suffered a lot of the anger about that within me has subsided. I even felt some genuine concern about Big Ben's recent appendicitis; :doctor: albeit my biggest concern for him focused on his being 100% against the Bengals so there will be no excuses for either side when it's all said and done. :bengal:

I was at that game when Sam went off and I still think it's one of the greatest things I've seen a head coach do !!!

WHODEY !!!

That was one of the most memorable days in Bengals history.-------------------------------- I remember having 4 free tickets to a Bengals game in Cleveland once, so I took 3 of the biggest friends I knew, to the game. Cincy was winning big, & Anthony Munoz scored, on a tackle-eligible pass play. The Cleveland fans thought it was rubbing it in. (which it was, with a 14 pt. lead) We cheered the Munoz catch while dog bones rained on our heads. There was a fight though, a guy threw a 'D' cell battery from his radio, & hit a lady upside the head, instead of my friend, who was sitting right next to her, & he saw the guy that did it. Needless to say, we were escorted off the premises, but I think that guy learned you really should'nt throw things like that at someone who could take you, & all of your friends together, & tie them in a great big knot.-------& miss---Big mistake.

I have a good bud who is a Philly fan, so he has seen bad fans all the time. Or so he thought.

He went to the Philly/Browns fan in Cleveland last year (or was it two years ago). He didn't know what he was in for.

We were talking, and I say "Where are your seats?"

"Oh me and my brother are in the endzone, pretty low actually"

"You mean in the dog pound?"

"Yeah, I guess it is. But it should be ok, there really is no history between Philly and Cleveland, so I don't expect trouble."

"Ok, but you literally are in for a huge shock. Be careful and make sure your will is up to date."

"Ha ha. Very funny."

I called him at halftime of the game.

"Hey I can't talk right now, someone just cold cocked my brother in the nose and we are trying to get the Hell out of here!!"

The next day he told me he had to be escorted out by the cops. I told him that is what you get for wearing an Eagles jersey in the dog pound. He called the Browns fans easily the meanest fans he has ever seen. That is coming from a Philly fan. That says a lot.
