I had to leave the US to become free. Im a pot smoking hippy. Why cant I live free in my own country with out someone telling me how to live my life or I go to jail! Live and let live , and keep your views to yourself! I dream of living free in the US but its not going to happen! The US is not free!

No s**t. I'm looking into Canadian citinship as we speak.

If it makes you feel any better Spain, I agree. The USA hasn't been a democracy for a long time.

It was never meant to be a true democracy though. I don't see how smoking pot has anything to do with democracy (and I even like a good hit every once in a while). If enough people want pot legalized, it will make its way to DC and the law will be changed. We're a representative democracy.

I actually lean more towards socialism in personal views, but view capitalism as a necessity.

I'm talking about more than toking the reefer, here. In a perfect world, communism is the perfect government. Everyone is taken care of, no one goes without. It's people that screw it up.

While the govt has to take some of the blame, it's citizen's that are mostly at fault. More people vote for American Idol that the freakin President. No one pays attention, and no one cares, so the govt can stick it to us ans most people are none the wiser

My thoughts after living a year in Japan, one of the most strict societies in the world....

America is free..... if you know the right people.

Some countries are never free... because you can't find the right people to know.

All in all, you are free if you are willing to do what the vast majority does, for instance, living in Japan, it is good to get drunk most days of the week and cheat on your wife or girlfriend here or there.... but if you don't say -I am sorry -or- excuse me- (not be polite), or try to reach too far outside of the "Society" and you will be ostracized.

anybody got a J' they could mail me?

Only works in theory, in reality there are way to many greedy people that feel they are better than the rest of societyand dont have to follow the rules.

Hmm...

a self professed illegal drug user and small time thief and con man (at least in his own mind) doesn't want to live in the US?

I don't know how we'll get by without you, but I'm willing to give it a shot.

(Take some of the wackjob actors and actresses that offered to leave during the last election with you.)

To paraphrase The American President, America is advanced citizenship. It requires the citizens to be responsible for their actions so that we can all enjoy the liberties and freedoms the system offers. Is it perfect? ABSOLUTELY NOT! Show me a system that is. But I'm pretty sure blaming the system for the consequences of your actions isn't going to make any system better.

Did you really have to leave the US to be free? Or did you just have to leave to be irresponsible?

Bengalboomer7 is right. Nothing means anything if no one does anything to promote their views. However, only having two choices isn't what I call a wide-range of options.

Buck3y3d - I think you're close. The forefathers of America didn't believe in Democracy in the truest sense of the word. They believed America should be, by the technical definition of it, a Constitutional Republic. The forefathers believed if we gave the people the power to make and modify laws, it would be disastrous and would never survive.

Spain - you're an idiot. I've been smoking for years and I still have yet to feel my freedoms are harmed. It's freaking illegal. Do you complain too when you see a woman that's really hot but can't touch her because rape is illegal? Are your freedoms dashed? There's NOT one thing that's happened to me personally, my friends or my family, throughout my entire life, that makes me believe we're losing our freedoms.

redsbengalsbucks - greed corrupts man in any system in any country. There's no exclusive ideology that it doesn't apply to.

AMERICA is the perfect system. Wanna know why? Because we're still the most economically powerful, we've become a leader in science and technology and innovations. We're charitable, compassionate, and very very tolerant in terms of race, religion and culture (except maybe Mexicans; they've over-welcomed their stay IMHO).

People love to bitch about America for mostly selfish reasons thinking that the WORLD revolves around them.

I’m fired up!

I think you hit on one of the MAIN problems in society today, Kirk. Almost EVERYONE thinks the world revolves around them. I have a friend that's had some bad luck and right now had to move back in with his parents. He's in this "woe si me" state and I have to admit, is very hard to hang around right now. i finally got tired of hearing him, and let him know that it's not so bad living in his folk;s $250,000 house, eating for free, when SOOOOOO many people have it so worse than him and that he's lucky his parents are there for him.

But people don't care anymore. Just look at our very own Current Events forum. There's maybe five regular posters in that forum. No one cares :(

Call me an Idiot but I have 32 plants on Blaconey in plain view and smoke while walking down the street. Have a good job and the women go naked on my beaches.

Well, I'm still out of weed, but there's a nude beach 20 minutes from my front door. No kidding, I used to surf there. To be perfectly honest, I've never seen anyone there wear their wifes scrunchies around their genitals, but if that's still your thing I'm sure the locals will make enough room on the sand for your towel.
