kentjett
We need to do whatever we can inorder to get Daniel Graham. I would consider him to be one of the better TE in the league. His statistics may not show it but they have another stud TE in Watson. He would definitely be a major upgrade at the TE position.According to the Boston Globe, Bill Belichick called Corey Dillon last Saturday to inform his starting tailback that the Patriots would draft a running back in the first round. Starting tight end Daniel Graham never received a phone call before the team drafted David Thomas and Garrett Mills, which could mean that his time with the Patriots is coming to and end.http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/NFL_SC-RUMOR
Stripes
How is he as a blocker? I'd wouldn't object to bringing Graham in, as I doubt he'd be very expensive. The few times I saw full Patriots games, he always seemed to make plays. Still, if he's more of a receiver than a blocker, then you can just forget about it. The Bengals have proven in this draft (against my previous expectations) how they value the TE position.I've liked the ideas I've heard about trying to package K. Washington in a trade for Graham, but I doubt the Patriots would bite.

Tight ends are primary blockers that occasionally get to catch one. And I think Kelly and Stewart are too important to our running game to underestimate. Please, gett off the tight end talk, you're scaring me. It's not gonna happen, it's not what we use, and frankly, with the recieving talents of Perry out of the backfield, it's not that important in the offense

HoosierCat
How is he as a blocker? It was his strength coming out of college, the question was whether he could hone his receiving skills, which he obviously has. If he were to shake loose, or be otherwise available (trade, etc.), the Bengals would be flat-out stupid not to go after him.

They have to know that all their UDFA tight ends are going to be longshots at having any success here, so maybe they've had their eye on Graham all along. I would simply take his comments as a strong indication of his belief that the Bengals aren't going to go after a quality TE if one becomes available. Given that they have broadly hinted they would have taken Fasano in the second had he not been snapped up by Dallas two picks earlier, I'm not sure why he believes that...but he we're all welcome to our opinions. The_Next_Big_Thing
Ok, you all know I was dead set against an early round pick on a tight end, going so far as to make a bet (*cough* where's my jersey *cough) that we wouldn't pick one on day 1.That being said, if Graham becomes available, we HAVE to do everything we can to snatch him up. He's as good a blocker as Kelly or Stewart, and he can actually catch the ball. I just think Bill couldn't find any innovative ways to use him, thus making him not fit Bill's mold. Stripes
If we get him we need cut tony though I'm not sure how kelly would feel about sense he'd never get playing time inless graham is hurt or tiredI think Tony would stick around, and Ghent would be back on the practice squad (unless one of the new guys can supplant him). Kelly would certainly lose some playing time, but that's how it goes I suppose. He'd still be as useful as usual in red zone sets (where I think he is underrated, even as a receiver). If Graham were to come in and fail to block as well as Kelly has been able to, then I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Kelly remain the starter and Graham just take on the role formerly played by Matt Schobel (though he'd do it better). That's a lot of maybes and ifs for a guy that's not even a Bengal right now though. ShulaSteakhouse
I agree, the Bengals' would be foolish not to look at acquiring Graham - experienced, complete TE with upside still, and played for a champsionship org for a few years. This notion that the Bengals' don't need/use a TE is foolish - they do use one, but the ones they have suck so bad at one thing or another that we don't see it as much.Graham would get several passes thrown his way every week, just like every other team who doesn't have a Gonzalez, Shockey or Gates. derekshank
I don't think Marvin tipped his hand abotu what he thinks about TE's. I thought I read that he was disappointed that so many TE's were taken earlier than expected... because he wasn't willing to reach for one, and the ones they had graded high were always gone by their pick.If Graham wants to come here, I'm sure the Bengals will be willing to accept him... and if the Pats want to do something other than simply cut him, I imagine we'd be willing to give up KW for him. That's what Hobson said, and it may have been the case. Still, this was the second straight season we've gone into the draft with an apparent hole at the TE position, and completely ignored it. That suggests to me that the coaches never saw any hole in the first place.
DuffMan
here's an old profile for graham coming out of collegehttp://www.nfl.com/draft/2002/profiles/graham_daniel.htmsays that blocking is a strong point for him i'd go after him heavily, if you have him on the field as a threat to catch or block instead with kelley where its mostly blocking then it opens up the offense even moresome might say we need KW if Henry is gone for a bit, to that i say Henry will not be gone that long, Tab is coming along well, Chatman is proven and i assume can play the slot, and we drafted 2 WRs + Broussard + PK SAM if any of them show up during campbut then again if we just sign him and keep KW more power to us

From what I've seen, he'd wind up being a major upgrade to the injured list.He tends to miss a couple games a season, but never played in fewer than 11.Another thing to consider: our current TEs have a combined 12 seasons of experience. In all that time, they have beaten the receiving numbers of Graham's worst season (150 yards) 3 times.Even with dings and dents, he'd be a major upgrade. Since the Reds haven't had a catcher that can hit .300, hit 30 homeruns, and drive in 100 RBI's, I guess that means they wouldn't want Ivan Rodriguez. OR it just means guys that can do that at the catcher position are hard to find. The same goes for the TE position in the NFL. There is only one Heath Miller, one Tony Gonzalez, one Antonio Gates, and one Todd Heap. So that means there are 28 other teams in the NFL that don't have a top caliber TE. Do you think it is because they don't want one? Or do you think it is because a great TE doesn't fit into their system? NO! It's because there are only so many GREAT TE's out there. So open your mind and realize the reason the TE is not a receiving option in the Bengal's offense is simply because the players on the roster at the position and not the system of the team. Kazkal
Well I'd throw in Dallas(written),Alanta(crumpler),Seahawks(Jerramy Stevens),Colts(clark),watson(patriots) winslow would if he would have training wheels on his bikeBut also alot of teams are trying to upgrade TE postion so theres no doubt roll of TE is changing Cowboys, patriots grabbed TE's when they were set there,rams,jags,49ers,broncos,cardinals(did they really need one with edge, boldin + fitz
andybren
As far as tipping one's hand....not picking a TE when you've lost one in free agency would signal to the Patriots that the Bengals aren't desperate. Not that passing on a drafted TE was a deliberate overture towards Bellicheck --- just a unintended benefit. The Bengals go into trade talks in a position of strength. It's practically a role reversal of the Dillon trade. When you've got a good program, sometimes things just work out on their own. Signing Henderson as an undrafted free agent, trading Washington for Graham....pretty good evidence for why people shouldn't jump out of windows on draft day.
