HoosierCat
Y'know, I really hope they sign him, if only for Hobson's sake. Geoff hasn't just stuck his head up Sam's big arse, he's climbed in bodily, set up an office, and is sending dispatches from deep within Adams' colon. To read his stuff, you'd think the Bengals were about to sign a combination of Reggie White, Tim Krumrie, and the deity of your choice. If the deal were to blow up, he might completely break down. andybren
True story....yesterday I was at my daughter's track meet and LB coach Rickey Hundley was there with his daughter. They were in the same event and we were standing next to each other. I asked him if big Sam had signed yet and he said no, that he was supposed to sign today (Sunday) pending the outcome of the physical and that he was scheduled to begin working out with the team on Monday. He didn't have much more to say other than he thinks he is "just another piece of the puzzle." Hopefully the physical went OK. Wow, and he didn't mention how all the workouts with Arrington have been going so well and how he'll be such an impact now that he is part of the team ?? I guess he's not allowed to know Arrington has been signed either... Good story otherwise...WHODEY !!!Hunley wouldn't know about Arrington because Marvin is making LaVar a player-coach. If Hunley spent his time smoking hash in Spain he would've known already known he's out of a job.The delay in Adams signing is probably just about logistics. He's coming to town for the workouts that start on Monday. So he'll just sign between the exam room and the weight room.
scott91575
I've been trying to find the article on Sam Adams signing. In the mean time I got multiple articles on the Bengals looking at him the other 2 times he was a FA. We have been after him for some time. Boy, now only if I really had that much pull at the stadium, I'd have a Bengalzone section in the club house and all Bengalzone members would get in for free !!!Anyway, I'm not shreding Arrington, just giving Spain crap for making the comment that he was signed and we just didn't know it yet... Personally, he would be a upgrade with the pickup of Adams (so we hear). He would have a big year with the rest of our LB corps. Then again, he will cost a ton, so the question still remains would that be the best way to spend the money knowing extensions need to be done ??WHODEY !!! TJJackson
Arrington can play in a 4-3 defense - doesn't Washington play a 4-3?
Stripes
Arrington can play in a 4-3 defense - doesn't Washington play a 4-3?They do indeed. People just seem to think he'd be the one missing piece left to form a solid 3-4 if we so desired. I am not one to say we're headed in that direction, as I think Arrington would be more than a solid upgrade over Simmons in a 4-3 (though probably more costly than I would like). HairOnFire
Arrington can play in a 4-3 defense - doesn't Washington play a 4-3? Marcus Stroud was on NFL Total Access all last week and in one of the shows was asked what Arrington might provide a defense like Jacksonville. So Stroud offered a number of points while video clips showed Arrington wreaking destruction from a 4-3 set. For the record, none of the clips showed LaVar rushing the QB from a hand down DE position OR from the edge as an OLB. However, they did show him getting a sack on one play, and blowing up the RB on another, on plays where he rushed inside after seeing the guard pull. Very impressive stuff. TJJackson
So there you have it....signing Arrington would not signal a move to a 3-
derekshank
I thought that was obvious. We're getting too worked up about the stuff Spain is dreaming about. Signing Arrington would most likely just make Pollack a true tweener. He would play DE, but be able to drop back to play OLB in a 3-4 when they want to switch up looks (like the Pats always do).Adams and Smith are the only guys big enough to play NT... and neither of them have experience doing it. If we sign Arrington (which I still believe we won't) we might see the 3-4 more often... but not as the base defense. It would probably improve the defense substantially now that we have Adams... but I still don't know if it is worth giving up one of our O-linemen... which we would have to do, being unable to extend them with the cap situation it would put us in. - but that's just me. A lot of people like our depth on the O-line, and maybe think the right side of the line is expendable.

Doesn't sound like it's likely to cross Hunley's path again, but if it happens, I for one would be real interested to hear what he has to say about Chris Gocong from Cal Poly. Hunley led the LB drills for Gocong at his Pro Day, so he should have a formed opinion about Gocong as both a LB and DE.
HoosierCat
The slo-mo signing of Sam continues. But, I must say I really liked his attitude when he said he was now on Bengals' time, and would be here all week, whatever Marvin wants him to do, he will do.I like the fact that his reason for signing here was clear, Marvin Lewis.I've officially changed my mind. I like this signing.
HoosierCat
I'll stiick with how I felt back when Sam's name first came up: if they sign him, fine. If they don't, fine. So they signed him. And apparently he came cheap. So WTF. If he's got anything left he will be an upgrade, and if he doesn't, well, it isn't like it's going to make our line any worse, y'know? So welcome Sam. Spain
Actually guys the Joker D is not a 3-4, it is a 3-4 hybrid 4-3, You can switch in and out of which ever. Peter Boulware played the joker on that D. Pollak will do it here. So -34 , 98-76. You call it what you want. However the true name is the joker D. This D confuses the hell out of O cordinators because the D can audible so quickly. You can show a 3-4 then go into a 4-3. Thats what screws QBs! I'm still waiting to see a breakdown of the contract he signed, but right now I wouldn't call it a cheap deal. In fact, a deal that potentially pays 4 million the first season feels like grossly overpaying for a part-time player who may only play for one or two more years. If he plays one and done it's pretty big coin. As for what Adams might have left, I'm trying to lessen my concerns by reminding myself that Adams isn't the type of player whose performence level is dictated by his athletic ability. He's a space eater whose greatest assets are pure strength and outstanding leverage technique, two things he'll have long after he's a retired fat bastard. Endurance is another matter though, and the less he plays the more expensive his contract will be. All things considered I'm hoping this deal turns out as well as the Richmond Webb signing.
