Stripes
Akili is counting his (mike Bown's) money in San Diego.....don;t forget he got $$MILLIONS and while he may not have been a good QB he is not the average stupid ex-player who blew his money on dumb things....his family set it up (investments, etc) so he would not have to work again...Harrington IS the White Akili....that is very funny.... Well I don't know about all THAT. Akili was the classic bust... The man only threw five touchdown passes in his entire career! At least Harrington can be counted on to win 40% of his starts and throw some scores. Then again, when you made that comparison you may not have been talking about their performances on the field at all, in which case this post is useless. ArmyBengal
Harrington should come to your houses and kick your asses for suggesting he's the white Akili Smith. For as bad as Harrington has been, that's just not fair... Now Ryan Leaf on the otherhand....WHODEY !!!
HairOnFire
Time to bump. Found the following and my head nearly exploded trying to understand why the Bengals would prefer a shorter contract if Harrington agreed to play for less. Lions | Trade of Harrington could happen soon; issues still in the wayMon, 3 Apr 2006 11:24:29 -0700ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports sources close to the discussions believe a deal for Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington could be completed sometime this week, and possibly within the next day or two. The two leading candidates, the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals, face different hurdles to completing a trade. The Dolphins don't have the sixth-round pick the Lions reportedly desire in trade for Harrington. The Bengals have a sufficient stockpile of draft choices, but are believed to be offering Harrington a one-year contract, and at less than the former first-rounder hopes to earn in 2006. Chiefs | Not showing much interest in HarringtonMon, 3 Apr 2006 11:22:18 -0700ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports the Kansas City Chiefs have displayed virtually no interest in Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington, to this point. That fact is somewhat surprising because the perception is that the Chiefs need to begin developing a young quarterback behind starting QB Trent Green. Dolphins | Agent denies Harrington prefers MiamiMon, 3 Apr 2006 11:19:38 -0700ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports agent David Dunn debunked a weekend report that Detroit Lions QB Joey Harrington preferred the Miami Dolphins over the Cincinnati Bengals, the only two teams with which Harrington has visited so far. "He liked both situations," Dunn told ESPN.com. "He liked the organizations and the coaches and, in a lot of ways, there are similarities, with both the (starting quarterbacks) coming off injuries. Nothing has been decided yet, but I don't think it will be a whole lot longer." The third team that has demonstrated the most interest in Harrington, the Denver Broncos, have not scheduled a visit. kingwilly
Chiefs | Not showing much interest in Harrington...probably because they watched his games and realized he was, in fact, terrible...
Stripes
I thought we were out of the running for Harrington already, but cool beans. I wouldn't object to picking him up, I do think he would be a worthy backup for one year and could get us a couple wins early in the season if he has to. Spain
Whats up with us ofering a one year contract. IF that was true, the real ? is are we going to draft a QB somewhere to be carson permanent back up!

turningpoint
I think the trade would already been completed for the 6th rounder, but the problem is Harrington wants more money then we're willing to offer.

ShulaSteakhouse
The problem with Harrington, is that he was drafted too high, now he's a "1st round bust" instead of a 3rd or 4th rounder who's "developed over time and has potential."Why he would go to Miami is beyond me, unless he thinks he can out-play Culpepper (probably not going to happen). At least here he could almost automatically, get all of the preseason and 1st half of the regular season to show his wares. The Bengals', IMO, are not wise to "not" offer him a 2 year deal - get some value for him next year when a desperate team comes calling! They always do! And if not, hey, I'll put up with him if Carson gets hurt, we're screwed any ways if so. Maybe he and Carson become good buds and Harrington is ok with the best job in the country after living here for a year - a clipboard holding millionaire. dchyde
DUNN USING BENGALS AS LEVERAGEAlthough agent David Dunn supposedly has debunked a report that Lions quarterback Joey Harrington prefers the Dolphins to the Bengals as his next destination, word around the league is that Dunn has no intention of sending Harrington to Cincinnati, where another Dunn client, Carson Palmer, is the current starter. But unless the Dolphins think that Harrington has a legitimate alternative elsewhere, Dunn has no leverage in his discussions with Miami. The weird twist here is that the Bengals are genuinely interested in Harrington, since Jon Kitna has left for Detroit and Carson Palmer is rehabbing a torn ACL. But Dunn, we hear, is concerned that Palmer might not be at 100 percent at any point in 2006, putting Dunn in the awkward position of representing the two principals in a four-month quarterback merry-go-'round. HoosierCat
Florio has been playing up this whole "Joey and carson have the same agent" angle for a couple days now...and frankly I don't see what the big deal is. Last time I checked Dunn just got Palmer a mountain of money, and Carson is the No. 1 QB as soon as he's healthy enough to go -- no matter how well Joey does. We saw that with the switch from Kit to Palmer. Comeback player of the year? Marvin didn't care, he went to Palmer.Meanwhile, Joey is just looking for a chance to control his own destiny. If he gets an audition via injury to Carson or Culpepper in Miami, great, hopefully he makes the most of it. Worst case scenario is that the starter is healthy and he sits on the bench, speaks when spoken to, says lots of happy things, and is free to chart his own course next season. All that said, I personally don't want any piece of The Bust From Detroit. Give me a proven backup like Jamie Martin (or even old man Flutie). What I don't want is another Akili Smith looking to revive his career. CJBestInAFC
Wow a very reliable site. How can you take a pro Steeler site seriously? I don't want a QB who had more completions to our secondary than he did to any of his 3 1st round WR's.
Ox
http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=5178Notes: QB hunt at end?By GEOFF HOBSONApril 3, 2006Posted: 8:15 p.m.Lewis: Meets the PresidentOn a day Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis got to shake hands with the President of the United States, his club is still grappling with the line of succession behind Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer. It looks like Joey Harrington of the Lions still has the Bengals on his short list despite reports that he has settled on Miami. The agent for Jamie Martin believes some kind of move is going to be made by the end of the week because the Bengals would like to get their fourth quarterback into camp soon. Tom Mills is still negotiating with the Bengals (they spoke Monday and plan to talk Tuesday), but the logjam could break once the Harrington trade and signing plays out.TWO-TEAM RACE: It looks like it’s a two-team derby for Harrington and he’s trying to figure out where he’ll get the most exposure since Palmer and the Dolphins’ Daunte Culpepper are coming off the same reconstructive knee surgeries. Culpepper is farther along in rehab, but Palmer is more entrenched as the starter.CONCERNED LEADER: The questions surrounding Palmer have reached the highest office in the land. On meeting Lewis again at Great American Ballpark Monday where he was on hand to open the Reds season against the Cubs, President Bush asked Lewis how Palmer was coming along.CONTRACT DEALINGS: Monday marked the first day of offseason conditioning for the Bengals, which meant guards Eric Steinbach and Bobbie Williams got hammered about their possible contract extensions. Neither appears to be close to a deal, but Williams is confident.“If they can settle the CBA, I’m sure they can settle this," he said.----------------------Anyone else see the irony of us swapping out fumbling INT throwing backup QB for the Lions? Just doesn't make sense to me really. Bring on Martin.
andybren
The fact that Martin's name keeps coming up says it all. The Bengals obviously liked him early on but held back when all the cuts/signings/trades started happening. When he signs I would expect Martin's agent will have a quote similar to what all those wives say about their husbands going to strip clubs...he can look, maybe even touch, but he's coming home to me, so that's all that matters. andybren
I know the Lions and the Bengals are different teams in different situations, but if Joey couldn't handle throwing passes to 3 1st round WR's, why does anybody think he'll be able to play with a 2nd rounder (Chad), a 7th rounder (TJ) and 2 3rd rounders (KWash, Henry)?Over simplification, yes, but still, don't talk about being surrounded by enough weapons. Joey Harrington is no David Carr. Also, concerning the agent representing 2 QB's on the same team...didn't Drew Rosenhaus represent Chad, PDub and KWash, all at the same time? I know KWash has moved on (to John Thornton's agent, I believe), but Rosenhaus was negotiating Nate Webster's pay cut while a lot of people were saying that Chad was going to hold out for more cash.Just shows you what PFT.com knows about such things. They know he'll be there whenever they stop chasing better options so there's no hurry to settle for a player that nobody else is interested in. Last, the fact that the Bengals are almost certainly willing to pay much more in salary...for a player they'd have to trade for...tells you even more about their feelings for Martin. And the lack of interest in Martin probably makes him more interesting to the Bengals --- it lets them play the field with all the other QB's, while knowing they've got a failsafe waiting for them to call. But also Harrington is a different "quantity" than Martin. If you're looking for a journeyman backup and happen upon a young, former starter that you like, you know your budget's going to change. Doesn't mean Martin is a lesser player than he was back when free agency started.
