Jason Allen or Ko Simpson

Recommended Posts

Lets say its down to the Bengals pick and Ko Simpson and Jason Allen are tied at the top of the Bengals board. Who do you pick and why?

I personally like Jason Allen better. He has size, fantastic athleticism and speed, experience at both corner and safety, he's a great ball hawk, he is good in run support, and he was a captain for the Vols. He also fits a Marvin Lewis first round pick perfectly. He is a senior for a major program that has started for more than one year, and he has great change of direction speed that Lewis covets on D (top short shuttle for safeties at the combine).

Here are his combine results:

Ht.- 6'1"

Wt.- 209 lbs

40 yard- 4.39

20 yard- 2.55

10 yard- 1.50

Bench reps- 17

Vertical Jump- 39.5

Broad Jump- 10"11"

Short Shuttle- 3.83

Cone- 6.77

that isn't even close after the combine. I would be pissed if they passed on Allen to take Ko. Ko might end up being a great player, but Allen is the safer rout as long as they are sure about his hip.

You identified the key question -- if Allen's hip is okay.

I've been a big support of Ko, but would not be upset, if the Bengals pick Allen-- because that would mean to me that the Bengals have checked out Allen and his injury is healed.

I do wonder why Allen did not perform the "position" drills at the Combine, if his hip is healed.

He did the position drills at the Tennessee pro day.

Have you seen any reports on how well he did?

Were the Bengals there?

Well I vote Ko cuz he is fast, quick, big hitter and a ball hawk. He is by far the second best safety in this draft

That sounds more like an insult than a compliment! :P

Ko would be fine by me, but lately I've developed a more of a man crush for Allen, Whitner or even Gabe Watson.

Gabe Watson? I never thought that you of all people would stoop so low.

Watson is the exact player I DON'T want the Bengals to draft.

I don't know much about how he did or who was there.

This is where I get my pro day results

This is where I get combine results

You and many others seem to be distasteful to that idea. Y'all could be right about him too, I dunno. I just get a feeling that all the negativity surrounding his motivation could be overstated. He's a good prospect in any case.

I went back and reviewed the game tapes for both and I believe Allen, if healthy (the BIG question :P ), is the smarter pick by the Bengals. :sure:

-- because he has shown that he can be an effective corner and that would give Marvin more options. Allen could provide a good backup at corner AND safety, until he is ready to play full time. B)

I still like Ko Simpson skills, but Jason Allen offers more "flexibility" :P -- if his hip is really healed.

IMO -- either one is better than Watson or Bunkley in Round 1. :P

But, Leonard Pope might be a safer pick, if the Bengals are concerned about Allen's hip or injury record.

(BTW, if the Bengals had gone by injury record alone, they would NOT have drafted, Anthony Munoz.)

I believe that Jason Allen would be an upgrade in the cornerback position and could the replacement for Tory James when the time comes.

I do NOT believe we have enough GOOD cornerback -- we have numbers. And, most of our corners with blemishes. i.e. lack speed or size or ballhawking skills.

Hey Madieu ;) has CB skills but I guess they would free him up to stay @ safety on nickle packages but why draft a safety to play corner rather then just drafting a corner....

Do you guys think ratliff will be gone after his contract goes up? or even if we draft a corner keep him for nickle/dimes for when we lose tory

I hear you Pap. CB has got to get priority and Allen has the advantage over Ko because Allen has a legit shot at being a cover corner if it don't look like his hip will turn to mince meat. Ko would probably only get looked at as a zone CB if even that.

But if it's a CB the Bengals are after, why fool with players who still are safeties. Ko has a better shot at SS who can interchange than Allen but the Bengals have signed Dex Jack and have a Pro Bowl cailber FS in Madieu returning.

To me drafting either Allen or Ko makes little sense at this stage of the game. What makes more sense is drafting

Antonio Cromartie

The reason to draft a safety high now is to bring on a top notch player for Jackson to mentor while we have him here.

Why not have a super bowl mvp tutor up not just Madieu but also another outstanding rookie?

The recent Bengals draft history starting with Toast Hawkins has been high-to-mid 2nd rounders for CBs. There's one on the roster right now -- Keiwan. A lot of what the Bengals are likely to do in this draft seems tied to how they really feel about Keiwan's chances to be the CB they thought he would be. Keiwan is serviceable if the Bengals can put a pass rush together to cut down on the coverage time required.
