ShulaSteakhouse
Apparently Carson is "4 weeks ahead of schedule" in his rehab - attributing the progress to underwater acceleration training of some sort.Folks, that's 4 regular season games possibly saved, every day/week is important. I think Carson is going to be just fine early in the season - a stable knee w/o soreness or inflamation or pain or weakeness means he can do everything they need him to - it's a matter of getting to that point - Week 2 seems to be more of a possibility now, if not sooner, but it's too hard to tell.Griese has apparently been sent an offer from the Bengals' - no word on his acceptance (or not) until Tuesday apparently.I'm fine with him coming here though as a backup, think it would be a good choice considering the circumstances and availability (or lack thereof) of others. HoosierCat
sounds like the Bears are going after Greise pretty hard...Bears | Team could make contract proposal to GrieseMon, 20 Mar 2006 05:48:35 -0800Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports after spending time with free agent QB Brian Griese (Buccaneers) over the weekend, the Chicago Bears are sending offensive coordinator Ron Turner to Florida to meet with Griese. Turner had a previously scheduled family commitment and was not around, so he will meet with Griese Monday, March 20, at Griese's home in Florida. If all goes well, the Bears could make their initial contract proposal. ''I don't think there is any question the Bears are an interesting situation,'' Ralph Cindrich, Griese's agent said. ''There is a large amount of interest on Brian's part. He'll (meet with Turner), and we'll see where things go from there.'' Griese still is rehabilitating his left knee after tearing the ACL and MCL Oct. 16 against Miami, but he is expected to be fully cleared by training camp. The Bears gave him a physical. ShulaSteakhouse
Yep, saw that also. Sounds like the Bengals' have found their man for now, but that they're having problems getting someone to come here. I know Bratkowski and Mike Brown liked Griese as a draft prospect. They are in a tough situation with Carson's uncertain return time frame, on top of the fact, that someone will have to accept a certain backup role as soon as he does return next season. At least in a place like Chicago, a QB has the glimmer of hope for competing for a starting job in the future.I would be suprised if Griese accepts the Bengals' offer. The_Next_Big_Thing
Love that news on Carson!Griese would be smart to chose Cincinnati. He could get a few games to showcase his talent to the entire league at the helm of an offense with so many weapons it is scary. He would get a chance to ride the pine behind a SuperQB all the way to the playoffs and (hopefully) get a Super Bowl Ring.
HairOnFire
The news about Palmer is good enough to make me temporarily lose almost all interest in the backup QB derby. It's more proof that Marvin wasn't blowing sunshine up our patoots when he claimed Palmer would very likely be ready when the season began. And since he made that claim long before Palmer began his underwater therapy I'll point to the decision to perform the surgery before the swelling had gone down as a major factor. They jump started the recovery from the very beginning. As for Griese, let it play out. If he chooses to go elsewhere move on to the next guy...and then the next. When one musical chair is filled another opens up. For example: Buffalo is rumored to be considering cutting either Kelly Holcombe or JP Losman. TecmoFever
Good news on Palmer. It seems like the more names pop up and then go, the more we should just forget about the what-if's and pursue Jamie Martin. He is right in the middle of the guys who think they're good enough to compete for a job (and therefore don't want to sit behind Palmer) and the guys who just want to stay in the league (and therefore I don't want them to be signed; we already have two of those guys and we don't need another). The_Next_Big_Thing
You know, I always liked Mike McMahon. Maybe it's just because he takes me back to the glory days of Jim McMahon in Chicago when I was a kid, but what the heck, he can't be any worse than Krenzel. Any one of them could start for the ratbirds but other than that...I'd take Holcomb right now with the offense here, if that situation ever cropped up.I'd take him just to stop him from throwing for 450 yards everytime he plays the Bengals. The_Next_Big_Thing
Neither Orton nor Grossman stink. Grossman has just been unlucky and hit so hard he's been hurt. Orton was a rookie who managed the game well enough to get the Bears a lot of wins.I do, however, completely agree with you about Holcomb! Stripes
I would think Griese would see a better opportunity here than in Chicago... but then again, McCown went for Detroit over us so who knows... With the good news on Carson, I don't give a rat's butt about these other quarterbacks.

I should've read this before I posted something about McMahon on another thread. Like I said over there I wouldn't have a problem with the Bengals singing him, he has some things over Griese (health, arm, mobility) and Martin(age, playing time) and he would come cheaper, and he would not be a stranger to playing behind a franchise QB. HoTbOy
The news about Carson was very GOOD to read....4 weeks ahead of schedule no wonder he was bowling...that news does put you in the i don't give a f**k mood now about other QB's coming here...the news about Holcomb or Losman being released is news to me, i have not heard one Jills fan tell me that at work tonight...if Holcomb would be a backup for J.P., he shouldn't mind being Carsons...unless he has starting aspirations...and J.P. reminds me of Harrington with a stronger arm... Mike Brown got it right when he wanted to draft Carson...
Spor_tees
McMahon has a killer arm and quick feet. He went to Rutgers so he can't be too dumb. Sounds like a solid pick-up to me if they can pull it off. I thought the lions made a big mistake releasing him in the first place, then I thought he did alright when he got a chance to play in a game in Philly. The guy just hasn't had a good QB Coach like Zampese and the chance to do anything. Bring him in, teach him a thing or 2, then trade him for something else in a year or 2! Yeah, Aaron Brooks went to Virginia and he can't even spell his name. I'd hold off on calling McMahon 'Einstein' just yet. Anyway, I wouldn't be pissed if they got McMahon, he's good enough to start in a spot but not so good that he probably thinks he can get a starting job. Though if they bring him in and coach him up I'd rather they kept him. Backup QB is a position where you want some stability.Let's hope the backup doesn't have to start any games this year anyway. I'm hoping people aren't guessing wrong on Carson, it would be great to have him fired up and ready to go Week 1.
oldschooler
Bears doing best to pin down Griese March 21, 2006BY BRAD BIGGS Staff Reporter AdvertisementThe Bears made a push to sign quarterback Brian Griese on Monday night after a meeting of minds in Florida between offensive coordinator Ron Turner and Griese went very well, a source familiar with the situation said.Whether the Bears are able to sign Griese is now largely up to him as he considers his options, which include the chance to push starter Rex Grossman but no guarantee of playing time."We're in discussions right now,'' agent Ralph Cindrich said late Monday.Cindrich indicated he was talking with multiple teams, including the Cincinnati Bengals, but Griese has visited only the Bears and Bengals. Cindrich said he planned to speak with the Bengals again today, and the situation could be finalized soon.Turner traveled to Florida to meet with Griese after a prior commitment kept him away from Halas Hall over the weekend, when the free agent visited and took a physical.Griese's visit to Cincinnati is viewed as a somewhat curious match because the Bengals already have one quarterback rehabilitating from a knee injury in Carson Palmer. Griese tore the ACL and MCL in his left knee in mid-October but is expected to be fully cleared in time for training camp. If the Bears sign Griese, he is expected to be the No. 2 quarterback, pushing Kyle Orton to the No. 3 role. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had hoped to keep Griese for a reduced price but wound up releasing him in a salary-cap move to avoid paying a $2.6 million roster bonus. The Bucs could re-enter the picture if he agrees to lower pay to back up Chris Simms.Cindrich also represents veteran Jeff Blake, who would like to return to the Bears. Blake did not get any substantial practice time last season, but when he entered the season finale at Minnesota, the offense zipped down the field and scored."It was so obvious to everybody,'' Blake said. "All I did was go in there and do my thing."I really like Rex. Rex is going to be a good player. I know I can show him a lot of stuff. I can't take this knowledge with me. I've got to share it with somebody.''Blake said he gets the feeling team officials throughout the league think he's older than he is. He just turned 35 and has not had any serious health issues recently."Nobody ever mentions age with Jeff Garcia [36],'' Blake said. "He and Brad Johnson [37] are both older than I am. A lot of teams miss out on good quarterbacks. They have a starter and then they have a young guy behind him, and as soon as the starter goes down, they call one of us. They get someone they know can play. Why don't they just have us in the first place?''At 31, Griese is younger and would provide general manager Jerry Angelo with the kind of backup he has talked about acquiring for several seasons.http://www.suntimes.com/output/bears/cst-spt-bear21.html
Sox
I'm thinking the recent good news about Palmer's rehab has to have a lot to do with the Bengals having difficulty signing a back-up QB.Instead of having 3-4 games to showcase yourself, now you might not even leave the bench. Maybe all the picks against the Bengals or the stellar performance against the panthers in the playoffs misled you. The only reasons they made the playoffs were their defense (real good) and the running of Thomas Jones against a pretty good O-line.Since we're making the comparisons, I honestly don't think any starter on the Bengals O-line would start for the Bears and I wouldn't take any of their offensive skill players over the Bengals.
