Harrington will fail, again. Kitna will be starting by week 5 and will finish out the season as the starter for the Lions.

Totally agree. Harrington cannot get it done. Harrington maybe the starter now, but not for long. Kit will start more games in Detroit than he would have in Cincy.

Lions | More about Kitna deal

Tue, 14 Mar 2006 12:02:47 -0800

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Jon Kitna reportedly agreed to a four-year, $10.5 million contract that included a $3.5 million signing bonus with the Lions.

$3.5 million SB for a backup QB?????

Looks like the Lord done led Jon to the Promised Land. Sheet, what a haul!

All I can say is this:

Daniel: God sends him and $0 into the lion's den.

Kitna: God sends him and $3.5 million into the Lion's den.

On the flip side, Daniel didn't get eaten. Kit...hoboy...

The over-spending this year on mediocre, over-aged FA's is now officially insane, and the Browns and Ratbirds are at the heart of it with some questionable signings they'll probably regret a year or two from now.

I almost feel good about the Bengals' typical approach of not over-paying and pursuing impact FA types or salty vets.

Although I thought the $ and length of contract given Dexter Jackson was a bit much.

But I won't complain about it until there's a reason to.

It's official, Matt Millen is a complete boob! I still think Harrington could be a quality NFL qb if ever given a full chance. But Matt keeps giving his job away to washed up qbs.

Sorry Jon, I love ya man, but I have to believe your good days are behind you. I certainly can't blame you for taking Matt's money.

Just my opinion, but there has to be something to the half-time incident. Whether or not Jon was the snitch, the relationship between the Organization and Kitna seemed to have changed after that game.

 My Rams buddy says that if anyone can change Harrington, Martz can...was Kitna the snitch why would you want out so bad from a team you know is on the rise...

You ain't just whistlin' Dixie, shula.

Some perspective: when the Bengals signed Kit from Seattle in 2001, he got a $4 million SB on a deal that topped out at around $12 million. Five -- count 'em, five -- years later his next deal is a mere $500k SB and $1.5m overall less -- and his best season was 8-8!

Damn. Where do I sign up for this gig? I promise I will go 0-16 but just cost you $250k. Total.

If anybody thinks they can "coach-up" Harrington it's Martz. He will give him a lot of rope next season--pretty much like he's gotten the last two years. Wasn't all the talk before last season that Harrington had better get it done or he would be out-last chance and all that. Now he's the starter ... again. With Martz the clown devoting his full powers to offense again, Harrington will have more lives than a cat.

Again, nobody begrudges JK the chance to go somewhere to start. But it looks to me like nobody really wanted to give him that chance and he still had his mind made up to leave so he had to end up where he has a genuinely iffy chance to start at all. He would've started the season here IMO. So, the decision was, in the final analysis, driven by money (and who could've guessed how much??!!?!). Only a fool would say no to that, but he keeps trying to come up with reasons not driven by money. There aren't any -- just admit the truth Jon, it's so freaking obvious.

That said -- good luck. Seriously. I just think you went to a worse situation is all.

:o something had to happen, why on god's polluted earth wouldn't the team try like Avis(harder) to sign the 1 guy who's been in this O for years...your franchise QB pleads for him to stay...you make it known that you want to start somewhere knowing you have a snowballs chance in hell of starting here...the team has made it know for weeks that they would be looking at QB's...

I wish Jon Kitna well, but unfortuatly I think he will be riding the bench behind Joey Harrington. I think this is a mistake on both parties. Jon, for one, wanted to go to a team that needed him to start right away. Now he has to compete for the position in a system he is not familiar with. He will make Joey a better QB just as he did with Carson and will find himself a backup again. Plus, I think this sets the Bengals back as they needed a proven backup to stabilize the position, which had not happen until Marvin Lewis took over. Jon Kitna brought that stability with his knowledge of the system, his leadership ability and experiance. Doug Johnson and Craig Krenzel are very limited in all areas. It has been proven that a winning team needs a solid back up. Brad Johnson came in for Daunte Culpepper last season and drove the team into playoff contention. Dating back to the only undefeated season in NFL history, Don Strock took over for an injured Bob Greise and helped guide the Dolphins to this feat. These are just a few examples of what an experianced backup can provide.

I hope Carson is able to come back quickly as he will be needed to start the season in order for the Bengals to get off to the quick start needed to make a playoff run again. If he is not ready, don't expect the Bengals to have a good start and then have to fight for a playoff spot. :(

If only Kitna had played as well as Brad Johnson when he got his chances last season maybe I would agree with you. The fact that Kit knows the system can be somewhat overstated, given that any backup coming in will be a vet who will have all of training camp and preseason (presumably) to pick it up.

Jon Kitna only had one chance this season, against Pittsburgh after Kimo intentially took Carson out (my opinion only, no facts involved) and Brad had nearly the entire season. Jon Kitna two years ago gave the Bengals a chance to make the playoffs, just as Brad gave the Vikings a chance this season. They both had equal time to prove thier worth, just in different situations. You can not expect someone to just pick up this rather complicated system over a few training camps and preseason and be able to operate it as well as starter. It just won't happen. They will need a couple of seasons with it, just as Jon Kitna did with his 4 seasons at Seattle with Bob Bratkowski. The Bengals made a mistake in not signing Kitna for a couple more years.

Hair... man, even when I disagree with you, I can always still manage to respect your opinion... until this.

It happens. We'll both live.

Frankly, I don't hate Kitna....even though I think he was the rat. But it was his time to go, and I don't feel compelled to go overboard praising him for simply doing his job.

Last, I'm not going to thank him for the fish after Joisey stepped all over my punchline.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know...it's all my fault. You, my wife, my dog...all I know is that I've got my towel and when the Vogon constructor fleet get here I'm history. (and don't forget the peanuts!)

well u have to admit it does seem kinda fishy that jon decides to go to a team who has stated their starter is harrington and jon wants a starters role. Let me see leave a team with a huge chance of getting a ring for me to a team that will be lucky to have a winning season. I think its looking more likley that jon was the snitch and he is at detroit to do the same thing he did with palmer but for bigger bucks.
