Bengals | Team to visit with J. Martin

Sun, 12 Mar 2006 15:08:24 -0800

ESPN.com's John Clayton reports the Cincinnati Bengals will visit with free agent QB Jamie Martin (Rams), after getting word from backup QB Jon Kitna that he probably won't be back in Cincinnati.

..snooze....why even bother, dude is like 43 years old...hell, they may as well consider Chris Chandler or Vinny if we are going to roll in geriatric patients...

//waiting for Brooks to be cut...then get on a plane to the 'Nati.

They want the cheapest deal possible. When they said they weren't going to spend much for Sage, I doubt they will change their views for Brooks. But hey, I would love to see him here.

I would still love to see Collins...just imagine the long ball possibilities. I can dream, can't I?

If I can't dream about Pickett, you can't dream about Collins... <_<

Sucks doesn't it ???

Its true he isnt a youngster but allot of backups stay in the league and produce when their number is called well into their 30's...

Martin has done that with the Rams and the Bengals are thinking they can squeeze another year out of him here...

Id like to see them at least talk with Kerry Collins about playing here for a year but it probably wont happen....

There are only three questions here

1) Is Jaime Martin a better QB than the other backup QBs were currently have? (I'd suspect this is a unqualified YES)

2) Is he willing to play for a reasonable rate?

3) Is there another available QB who is better than him who is willing to take a reasonable rate of pay as well?

All in all, this guy has won some games and could probably do well (read as: better than the two fellows we already have under contract) with the OL and weapons we can put around him. I'd still rather have McCown, but am starting to see that he's probably even more insistent on a chance to compete for the #1 QB spot than Kitna is.....

Since it looks like Kitna is going elsewhere, Martin will be fine. He was servicable with the Rams in his time there this season when Bulger went down... and that is all you can ask for from a back-up. He'll play smart, and not make mistakes. He's been in the league a long time, and will know how to be productive with all our weapons. We just can't land a young guy who has potential to be starting elsewhere... it just won't happen, so you have to go with what you can get... and Martin will be as good as any for starting a few games before Palmer gets back.

As for Collins... sure he'd be okay as a backup... but he sucks in all the areas that Martin excels (good decision making). My guess is he'll get his shot to be the starter in Baltimore, and be reunited with Jim Fassell. He'll be an upgrade for them... but he throws too many INT's... so I don't worry about him bringing the Ravens back to glory, and I won't be overly disappointed that we can't land him.

Count me out of the Collins fan club... The Raiders expected great production from him with their offensive talent, and he didn't really live up to it. I have my reservations about Brooks as well... But he has produced decent numbers prior to last season's goofiness. Martin? Sure, whatever.

One never wants their #2 QB to play, except in preseason and mop-ups

But you hope for the best, and plan for the worst.

You sign a 2 QB with the assumption that he WILL play...and how will he do in your system?

Eventhough he is 36, he has a career passer rating of 81.9, and Kitna's career rating is 75.3. :pokey:

The other important stat, especially in the Bengal's system, is YPA where Kitna's average is 6.44, and Martin's is 6.98. The magic number in YPA is around 7.

I'm all for signing Martin because I know Kerry Collins and Aaron Brooks are going to want WAY too much.

Brian Griese age 30 Career Passer rating of 84.8 and a career YPA of 7.05! :inlove:

Now if he will only come in cheap!

:detective:

Which he probably won't. <_<

I don't think we have any shot at landing any quarterbacks who started last season... If somehow we do, Griese and McCown are my two favorites.

Yeah... he will probably come cheap... but I'm pretty sure he tore his ACL last season too. I'd hate to have both our #1 and #2 QB's not able to start the season because of the same injury. Doesn't sound like a wise decision to me... besides... he had a starting job when he got hurt... so he's probably another guy who will be looking for a place that he can compete for a starting job eventually.

Griese tore his the 4th-5th game into the season whereas Palmer tore his in the play-offs. Griese might be willing to sign a 2 year contract to get on a winning team and then look for a payday after that because he is only 30. :arabia:

Is there a little smiley face that indicates when someone is dreaming?

Damn but this is depressing. Rosenfels...Martin...Griese.

Frerotte...Mitchelll...O'Donnel...Akili...Kitna...Boomer v2.0...Covington...Justin...Schroder...Klingler...

Another year, another examination of the (few) merits of this or that scrub QB. Thank you Kimo von Freaking D**klesswonderhoffen.

On that topic... we haven't heard anything recently on Palmer. If he is on schedule he should be starting straight plane running in the next 10 days. I would think that the Bengals would want to publicize that if it is true. Keep your ears open for any updates.
