Bengals Tender RFAs

The Bengals today announced that the team has made tender offers to four unsigned players, all entering their fourth NFL season. The players are WRs Kevin Walter and Kelley Washington, FB Jeremi Johnson and G Scott Kooistra.

By making the tenders, the Bengals gain the right to retain the players by matching any offer sheets they would sign from another team. The players could also remain with the Bengals by signing the tender offer for 2006, or by negotiating a longer-term contract with Cincinnati.

All four players were tendered at a dollar amount which qualifies as their “draft-status level.” This means that if any of the RFAs sign elsewhere, the Bengals will be compensated with 2006 draft choices from the new team(s), matching the round in which the player was originally chosen. Washington was a third-round choice and Johnson was a fourth-rounder. Kooistra and Walter were seventh-round picks. All were Bengals draft picks except Walter, who was chosen by the N.Y. Giants.

I sure as hell don;t if we upped that anty it would of been 1.5 million more towards the cap, and that means virtually no FA signings.

No 1 is going ot sign a FB for over 1.2 million a year, and he would of been tendered 1.4 million.

Kooistra, wow we lose a back up lineman, we have our rookies from last year ready to com in and fill some spots.

I don't think there was any need to tender them at higher levels, but whether the Bengals did or not isn't going to have any bearing on their FA signings. They rarely sign anyone of note (outside of their own clubhouse) no matter how much space they have.

Yeah, JJ isn't going anywhere.

Koo is capable of starting, at least short-term (don't know how his endurance would hold up season-long). With Willie's future uncertain losing him would be a big blow. Of all the RFAs he is the only one I consider a must-have.

I consider JJ slightly more important than Kooistra. I think he deserves a ton of credit for Rudi's success, and has emerged as another potential threat in the passing game, specifically the red zone... He had three touchdown catches last year. Scott is also valuable for the reasons already mentioned, but I think he can be more easily replaced by players already on the roster... perhaps Wilkerson or Kieft?

I hope all 4 come back. Not willing to rely on the rookies from last year quite yet, if ever. The CSU boys will be lucky to have a roster spot longer than their contracts here. I have yet to see Paul Alexander develop a project into a good player he didn't inherit yet. Hell Goff went to SD and is a Pro Bowler now. They're either good right out of the gate, or they're not on the o-line here it seems. But you wonder if a freak like Andrews might make it on ability and experience alone.

JJ is underrated, he's a good player when he's on his weight. Washington is a better #3 WR than anyone they'll get in the draft at this point or in FA, if he learned anything from last season. He was solid when he did play, as good as he's ever looked - tough and sure handed, took hits and got open, big target, has TJ speed, knows offense and Palmer, does silly dances.

I can't imagine anyone matching for Walter, obviously he's improved and plays ST's and is a #3 WR in a pinch.

Still would love to see a speedy jitterbug WR here to compliment all the size at WR - Broussard maybe with Henry out - but not real hopeful for him.

Those 4 are part of the solid continuity and stability the Bengals' need to keep up now - it's what has made Pittsburgh good for so long.

Look what re-signing TJ and Rudi did for this team - years past they let guys like Shade go over a couple hundred thousand.

Like Shi$$sburgh, the Bengals' only dive into the big name FA pool once every few years.

The Bengals offered "draft- status" deals, meaning if another team signs the player to an offer sheet and the Bengals choose not to match it, the Bengals will receive as compensation a draft pick equal to where the player was selected. The "draft-status" amount is $712,000, the lowest of the four levels of tender.

Washington was a third-round selection, Johnson a fourth and Kooistra and Walter seventh-rounders. The Texans are believed to be interested in signing Walter to an offer sheet.

Koostra scares me, that goys bad. You dont even notice when he comes in. He subed willie with no drop off. We need to keep him. Washington with Henry soon to be taking it up the arse is necesary. s**t Walter contibutes. JJ is another ?. He had a great rookie year sophmore year was fat. Then an average year this year. He can walk. Bernstein FB Wisocnsin is a beast. A guy like that would be great on the power O.

When I hear people knock on JJ, I think back to what Willie said about Dillon's Pro Bowls (and Willie's relatively few Pro Bowls) --- the accomplishments of the featured back are reflective of the accomplishments of the guys blocking in front of him.

If Rudi breaks franchise rushing records, then JJ is not just an "average" fullback.

And he can catch passes, too. They should've offered him a better tender or signed him to an outright contract.

I'd hate to see Walters go, but at least with Houston a 7th round pick is practically the same as a late-6th round pick. It's 31 picks higher than the undrafted FA.

I have to agree with you Andy. JJ gets very little credit for what he has done for this organization.

I would love to hear Rudi's take on JJ not being here next season...

WHODEY !!!
