  1. I said boo (and more) about Henderson quite a bit a year ago, and on occasion since then, particularly when Fanene was coming off IR and I had hoped he'd remain on IR and Henderson would be brought up

I know the Wretched One had brought him up a few times as well.

He and Wilkerson have never been off my radar since they signed as UDCFAs in consecutive years.

The reason the other teams passed is because he was injured and couldn't really play last year, and had a considerable injury history to boot. That and 6'2 is generally considered short for a NFL DE

I honestly do see him making the roster this year and getting a lot of playing time

As far as 'excitement level' I think there's not a lot else to talk about right now. :-)

  2. Stepping in for Kaesviharn - Kilmer - check

Stepping in for Steinbach - Whitworth\Andrews - check

Stepping in for Washington - Brazell, Chatman, and Green - check

Stepping in for Simmons - Ahmad Brooks and Andre Frazier - check

Stepping in for Smith - Domata Peko and B Robinson (move from DE) - check

Stepping in for Robinson at DE - Eric Henderson - check

Stepping in for Tony Stewart - any of the three PS TE's - check

Stepping in for Askew - my dead gramma - check

  3. There is an investigative article, an excellent one in my opinion, in this week's Citybeat (Citybeat is a free local weekly "newspaper" supported by advertisements, for those of you out of town or otherwise unaware) about the Bengals 1997 stadium deal.

    Link: http://www.citybeat.com/2007-03-14/cover.shtml

In the article, it is revealed that the County may recently have acquired new evidence to support their claims against the ridiculously lucrative (for the Bengals) 1997 stadium deal. It's an excellent read for any Bengals fan who is also a Hamilton County resident, or for anyone who wants quick a glimpse at the ugliness of the Bengal's top management.

Don't get me wrong - I am glad they are still the Cincinnati Bengals, but despite that it is very obvious that Hamilton County (led by Bob Bedinghaus, the slime who now has a cushy job with those selfsame Bengals, all legal, but clearly not a good thing) were screwed royally by the Bengals, and the fact that they allowed themselves to be screwed doesn't change my opinion of who the real wrongdoers are/were.......

    .....stepping off soapbox.......

    ....anyway, it's a good read

  4. nflfans.com is a good site rooted in the draft, and has a message board

    http://www.nflfans.com/x/

admittedly, the Bengals forum on the message board does not see a lot of activity right now, but I try to keep it fairly current. The shoutbox is an interesting and sometimes fun extra feature

as an aside, they are looking for mock GMs for their mock draft this weekend....Bengals GM has aready been selected.......see http://www.nflfans.com/x/showthread.php?p=114929#poststop

  5. Because the Bengals are so well positioned for compensatory picks right now, I'd say they should draft the player they need -or- pick up a guy who is willing to sign for veteran minimum and who therefore won't impact the compensatory pick eligibility much.

New England seems to have it right - skip a FA year, collect lots of picks, then the following year, sign free agents. By taking a year off at a time and losing some quality guys, they pick up extra draft picks - quality picks - every other year.

  6. As I read it, UFAs are for this purpose UFAs, regardless of where they leave and where they sign.

all 4 of those players were UFAs, available to any tam (including us) and their overall loss\gain just about offsets, imho

On the other hand, if you're right, I could see another r7 pick for the loss of Wilkins and Stewart - but for now, in the absence of a definitive understanding on this, I'm calling those 4 offsetting

  7. Looks like they'll play them both, decide which one at the end of the year has played better, and keep (pay) that player and let the other go. I doubt they intend on affording both. I also have no doubt they've told both players they are competing against one another for the big 2008 roster bonus....ie both are now HIGHLY motivated

  8. I'm going to use this thread to track a guesstimate - based on the fact that it appears the Bengals are bound and determined to see a large net loss of free agents - of what compensatory picks the Bengal will be awarded in the 2008 draft.

I'll keep editing this first post as we lose more free agents (expected) and sign free agents (yeah right!)

It should be understood that the picks range from r3 to r7, there are 32 of them, and no team can accumulate more than 4 of them. I believe there are 8 picks awarded in each round, so to get a r3 pick, the loss has to be one of the 8 biggest. The loss of Adalius Thomas by the Ravens is (for example) arguably the biggest signing this season, but Steinbach was rated in the top 10 free agents (some rated him as high as #3) by most publications I reviewed, and therefore I consider his loss likely to earn us a r3 pick

that said, on with the guesstimate

Pick 1 - r3 - comp for the loss of Eric Steinbach (Cleveland) - no offsetting FA signed by Bengals

Pick 2 - r7 - comp for the loss of Kelly Washington (New England) - no offsetting FA signed by Bengals

Pick 3 - r6 - comp for the loss of Kevin Kaesviharn (New Orleans) - no offsetting FA signed by Bengals

    Pick 4 no award

Note: One could easily argue a 6 for KW and a 7 for KK. It's a flip of a coin for me, and bottom line, the same end result

Offsets - loss of Tony Stewart and Marcus Wilkins offset by signing of K Watson and R Kelly

Not applicable - loss of Brian Simmons - Brian was cut a day or two before FA started

Not applicable - any RFA loss - the material I've read indicates that *only* UFA gain/losses are considered for this purpose

Not sure why the Bengals didn't just let someone sign Brian Simmons away instead, thereby earning the possibility of another pick. Then again, the general management of the Bengals leaves much to be desired, even in the Marvin era.

  9. For a man with a heart of a pig, you make a good point :-)

Given the choice in football between two equally talented defenders, I favor the bigger one, because the bigger ones start closer to the football. I see us winning more games than we lose when we control the line of scrimmage, and of course, to even say so is tired and well-trod ground

So yeah, all else being equal, Id rather see us take a linebacker than a corner or safety if all else seems equal.

Let us not forget that we lost another linebacker - Marcus Wilkins - to free agency and draftees are typically called upon to play special teams. I can see us drafting at least one and as many as three linebackers in the upcoming draft. Honestly.
