  1. *laff*

what can I say, I'm still passionate about the need to draft well, but the overall (Frostee still sucks) results of last year's draft versus what I thought about it have me stepping back and giving everything a second thought.

I do envy Jacksonville for the damn near perfect trade down manuever.

  2. Ok, so we took him almost a year ago, and he was on the roster all year.

    *shrug*

from my point of view, he was and is our third round pick this year, taken at pick 80, because that's what we paid for him. You may or may not accept that point of view, but let's say for sake of argument, just for a moment, you do.....

    .....so.....

.....are there any players not taken at pick #80 this year you would prefer over Ahmad Brooks?

I'll start you off with my vote: I'd rather have Brooks than any other player available as of pick 80 this year. I'll add as a related aside that i was sure when he was picked that he'd be in jail by now, but no, he's been a solid citizen as far as I know, no arrests, no legal troubles. Sometimes, it's good to be wrong.

If there's a player (or players) you'd rather have, name them, and provide your reasons.

  3. BPA defender :-)

yeah, I know, what a copout.

at least I am not screeching and hollering about this draft, like I was last year :-)

Ok - the guys i like here

    S John Wendling here

    or

    DE Bran Robison

    or

(and yeah, this despite my oft-stated preference to draft defense defense defense)

    OT Doug Free

  4. My take on this pick is that

    a) I still would have preferred a defender, and I can see several quality defenders remained available at that point, even if Durant was not available.

    B) I have recognized all along that we needed a TE and a RB out of this draft, I just wanted them on Day 2 rather than Day 1

    c) The Bengals must feel at some level that Irons is more the player he was in 2005 (when he was a phenom) than in 2006. Anyone can healthy and phenomenal in 2005, dinged and average in 2006. Ok, I can put my trust in them on this.

    d) Based on his qualities and strengths\weaknesses, it does not appear to me - long term - that he is intended to replace Chris Perry, ie be a 3rd down receiving back. Said another way, what I have seen and read does not indicate he is a significant receiving threat. But I'd say that that his arrival probably does spell the end of Two Carry Perry. I am confident that a combination of Kenny Watson and Tab Perry (from the hback spot) can handle the 3rd down back responsibilities this year, and they will have to cut a running back to make room from Irons. I say that this year, that's Chris. But long term - I think you are looking at the replacement for Rudi, who's running style has gotten him pounded over the years. I like this guy's speed, elusiveness, and fire. I think his weaknesses (strength and blocking) can be worked over the next few years.

    e) A lot of the online profiles for this fellow say he is "more quick than fast" or something roughly like that. I check his foot speed, and he's listed as a 4.45 guy. Heh. If he is more quick than fast, he must be greased lighting. 4.45 is plenty fast, and a lot faster than Rudi

    f) Does anyone know if the Bengals had a private workout or interview with this guy?

    g) I haven't gotten a handle on this guy's character and work ethic. Anyone have any input on that?

    Bottom line:

I don't think this was a r2 level need, but it was/is a need, and based on what he did when uninjured (in 2005) this kid looks like a steal. It really comes down to if he can return to form, and pick up the strength and blocking he needs to be successful.

I call this pick a C+ - and that's nothing against this guy, really, it's mostly because the defensive needs were (and still are) greater

  5. Great pick

I wanted one of (in the order stated) Timmons, Nelson, Revis, Hall. Sure, I was pissed when Pitsburgh took Timmons, and was wishing we had been able to pull a Jacksonville deal and trade down, but hey, it's a good pick. a Damn good pick.

Now for a S, LB, or DL in r2......

  6. nah

when someone puts up a mock in a discussion forum, they are implicitly inviting comment on it. My comment was....no more wideouts, please. Note that he not only drafted a wideout, it's in r2, when we need to be picking up yet another quality defender

    The thought behind this is

    a) you can only keep 5-6 wideouts

    B) we have a good set of 5-6 already

    c) anyone you draft means you have to cut a good wideout

    d) I'd much rather draft a quality defender and cut a lesser quality veteran defender (which we have in plenty)

    ergo

    e) no more (freakin) wideouts. please.

    I'm calm. really. :-)

Maybe I could have said what I originally said in a way that conveyed more calm...tho

  7. Well, in that case, maybe you can find it in your smouldering heart (fire on the head, surely the heart must smoulder a bit) to consider accepting that the opinion I (and others) had of the 2006 draft was a case of my own (and that of others) personal "wrong half the time" allowance.

Unless you require all others to be right 100% of the time.

In which case, you can go straight to that real hot place they talk about a lot in church on sunday :-)

  8. *laff* ok big guy.

You don't want to accept that a guy can be wrong AND come to accept that later AND then apologize AND thereby stand corrected, so be it.

It's a good thing Head o' Flame never makes a mistake, folks, for he'd never be able to live with himself thereafter. Months and months later, even.

In any case, no, I look forward to the draft every year, eagerly and optimistically. I think most of us do.

  9. Well, it could be worse I guess. I could have been one of the apoplectic fugtards who whined for months that last years draft was the worst ever when it was actually quite good.

Well, you could be one of the apoplectic fugtards who whined for months about others stating an opinion eventually proven wrong , even well after apologies were publicly made about same, never letting a very dead horse remain unbeaten for even a day.

Nah, that couldn't be you. No way. Forgive and forget all the way. :-)

  10. Frankly, I predict all that regardless of who they take...this board goes schizo in late April of every year as near as I can tell.

I'm more than a little surprised that nobody here has jumped the gun by calling the coming draft..."The worst ever."

The only one talking about WDE anymore is you, Hair......I even started a thread to openly/publicly proclaim how wrong I was.

then again, you seem to need things to complain about to be happy, err, uh, content here.

  11. Although I realizing that maybe only 0.00001% of you care.....

Since I really cannot edit this thread long term as the outlook changes, I am going to cover this content on another website and simply notify you all (again, the 0.00001% of you who care, plus the rest of ya, and even Haironfire) that I've updated the post over there.

So you can go there. To read it. Yeah. That'll happen :-)

    *laff*

    Anyway....check it out.....http://www.nflfans.com/x/showthread.php?p=122581#poststop
