That different direction is apparently UP. Frazier had a tough early season this year with the injuries, but I think that ML saw the handwriting on the wall when he decided to start making some of the defense play calls (vs. Cle I think). This should not be that much of a surprise. And at least ML does it the right way by giving him the entire offseason to look for another spot.

According to Hobson, Marvin is looking to go in a different direction and Leslie will not be offered a contract for this upcoming season. Ouch....

Pretty stunning after ML saying a few days ago they would all be back.

If this is about accountability, I am all for it. D was better, but not enough better. Even factoring in injuries. Very interesting indeed.

I agree. Maybe he just wanted to discuss it with Mikey, or not spring it on Frazier in the media...? Odd, tho, he's been very supportive of Leslie all year, even using the game where he called the plays instead of Frazier as an example that, it wasn't the guy calling the plays that was the problem.

Guess we don't have to worry about Corey Simon anymore, tho...

So who's in line for the job and what improvements will/should they bring?

That's a bit of a surprise. I guess some folks on this board are finally getting what they wanted. I think there was a philosphical difference between the two however. I think Lewis' teams have always been big on just rushing four and getting ample pressure with them. I think Frazier's background with Philly was to have multiple fronts and blitz more often.

I will give Marvin credit for putting the team first and going with what he knows will work. Unlike LeBeau that wouldn't meddle with Duffner's defense when he became HC. He should have been more forceful in using the same things that were successful in Pittsburgh and have proven successful again there this year.

The trickle-down now begins. I wonder which of the position coaches will be gone and obviously which players will be released next. Perhaps Marvin will call the D next year?

Well I certainly was one of those folks early in the year, but as the season progressed, I totally changed my stance on him. NOW they decide to dump him!?! I thought he had a definite job next season! That'll teach me!

1. I for one am shocked, especially since Marvin said already that everyone would have been back.

2. I would have preferred to see Bratkowski go myself, but if this is what Marvin thinks is the best thing for the team then I'm all for it.

3. Looks like Bresnahan will be the DC.

1. perhaps Frazier didn't want a new contract. we don't know what personalty / philisophical differnces there were between the two (as someone has already touched upon). Marvin doesn't wash his dirty laundry in public so I guess we may never know.

2. Well, there's certainly been a warning shot across the bows for all players/coaches sinces Marvins been in. I don't think however that now is the right time to bring in another offensive scheme that a new OC may bring, when Palmer is still in early development.

3. I like the idea of promtion from within, especially with a bunch of 1st year players and some (probably) high picks from the draft. It's better to have someone who knows what the current personnel can do and play to their strengths rather than a complete new face coming in at this present time.

The AP's release. In BOLD is the AP's speculation that there was a "rift". Not sure if it's a rift with the two, rather the loud calls for Frazier's dismissal earlier in the season promoting Lewis' need to call a few defensive plays.

CINCINNATI - The Bengals fired defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Wednesday, the first change to coach Marvin Lewis' staff since their 8-8 finish.

Frazier was defensive coordinator in Lewis' first two seasons, when the defense's inability to stop the run was a glaring problem. Lewis said Monday that he expected all of his coordinators back next season.

However, Lewis announced Wednesday that he had decided not to offer Frazier a contract extension.

"I credit Leslie for his part in leading the defense to where it is today," Lewis said in a statement. "But I see this as the time to move to another stage in our team's evolution."

Lewis declined further comment.

Lewis came to Cincinnati with a reputation for defense — he coordinated the unit that helped Baltimore win the Super Bowl in the 2000 season — but the Bengals have struggled to stop opponents in his two seasons as head coach. They finished 28th in defense in 2003, and were 19th last season.

A rift between Lewis and Frazier surfaced during a 34-17 loss to Cleveland that left the Bengals 1-4. Lewis started calling some defensive plays during the game because of the poor performance. Lewis went back to letting Frazier run the unit after that game.

That's just an example of Marvin being a class coach. He doesn't hang his guy out in the middle of the season or jump on him in the media. I agree that they brough Bresnahan in in anticipation of this possibility and that the decision was made a couple of months ago, but they didn't want to disrupt the team in the meantime.

As long as these guys don't go to our division rivals, then i am sure we'll be fine.

It is also refreshing to see guys being held to some level of accountability for the performance of their units. No Al Roberts' around here anymore!
