Along with several others, I was puzzled and disappointed to see Krenzel win the 3rd spot over Casey Bramlett in pre-season. I might be missing something, but it seemed to me that Bramlett at least had the potential to be an accurate and reliable backup who could throw the deep pass when needed. I have no idea what factors favored Krenzel in that decision, but can't we all agree that he gives you much the same things that Kitna does and has the same limitation -- arm strength. Don't we now have basically 2 Kitnas backing up Palmer? Don't we now have to look elsewhere for competition for the #2 spot (which will really be the #1 spot at the start of next season)? And, in looking for potential competition aren't we forced to pretty much look for one that looks a heck of a lot more like Bramlett than Krenzel?

A reasonable response to these questions would be that Krenzel is just as good as Bramlett (and then, no doubt, the reference to his winning percentage as a starter which IMO is much less reasonable because it's more a statistical anomoly than anything else). Maybe -- as I recall their preseason stats slightly favored Bramlett in most respects. So, I'm not saying it was a no-brainer, but I think they let go of somebody that I would now much rather have under contract than Krenzel.

Who knows -- this may turn out to be irrelevant. I don't even know where Bramlett landed, if anywhere. Maybe they can easily bring him back in. But I still don't get the Krenzel move and don't see what he possibly brings to the table other than an Ohio pedigree.

kitna will sign for a lot less than franchise-tag dollars. he is too big a p***y to want to start anywhere else.

Dumbest comment of all time.

bull crap. i GUARUNTEE both of the above statements happen. kitna is too happy and content in cincy to wanna play anywhere else. and he will do it for cheap. maybe my choice of words led you to believe it is the dumbest comment of all time, but the general breadth of the statements is true.

Well, you can understand my confusion when you call anyone a puss in positive terms... but you're right. I'm misunderstood ya... sorry.

Krnezel was grabbed for his smarts. The guy is very bright...will be a doctor once his playing days are over.

For an immediate fit, in case kitna goes bye-bye, I'd throw Aaron Brooks a line. He is done as a Saint and better arm and more mobile than Kitna.

Yep, Warner, Brooks, maybe another QB or two i'd rather have than Kitna at this point - problem is it's short notice, he knows the offense and the personnel - and the Bengals' are likely to keep the status quo and have him hold down the fort until Palmer comes back in October or November.

All that said, I really hope they do look at some other vet Qb's as a backup here for the longer term - there's enough offensive talent (one of the reasons Kitna looks even competent at times) here for a QB with a decent arm and experience to win games if the defense gets improved.

I have zero faith in Kitna to do anything at this point - his 2nd half Sunday was miserable just like his performance in KC.

I don't even consider him a "good" backup QB anymore - he looks terrible, sorry.

How about Joey Harrington?

Word is he's probably done in Detroit. And living in GR I've gotten to see him play a lot. Many of his problems stemmed from the fact that the O-line is terrible and the receivers drop a ton of passes (most in the league over tha past couple of years I think).

Having Carson Palmer to mentor him, (I know that sounds strange, but he had no one in Detroit) and solid talent at WR that he can trust, might make him one of the best Back Ups in the league.

Also a very classy guy, who took a lot of undeserved criticism in stride.

That's not bad. But do you think Joey would become the Jim Sorgi (sp?) of the Bengals? In Joey's view, I'm sure, it's a matter of showcasing talent and finding a starting gig somewhere else. Not sure how much PT he'd get to do that..

I certainly wouldn't tag Kit, but after he goes out in FA and find no starting gig I'll be happy to take him back.

As for his performance in the second half yesterday, I'd expect nothing less when yoour OC abandons the run and asks you to throw into the teeth of a defense that at one point dropped 9 into coverage...and when you do toss a good long bomb, "Battlin'" Chad Johnson drops it...
