Ox
NFL.com had a good write up on how injuries seriously change how The Bengals and Chargers handle their two QB's. The difference is, SD has control over their QB's, we don't over Jon. There is a possibility that we could franchise him, thus eliminating him going elsewhere. Now we're talking abouit a $6 - $6.5 mil cap hit. Here's the story if you want to read it.http://www.nfl.com/nflnetwork/story/9152858Any thoughts? Stripes
Seems like a lot of money for an insurance option... Still, if Palmer can't get back, we might not be left with many other options.
The_Next_Big_Thing
Using the franchise tag on Kitna, and paying him the average of the top 5 QBs in the league (in other words paying him almost as much as Palmer) would be absolutely STUPID!1. Palmer will be back mid season in a worst case scenario where he starts out on the PUP.2. Kitna will probably sign for at MOST $2 million a year, instead of at least $8,000,000 for the year.3. We would be better off long term letting Kitna sign somewhere else, going 0-16 for a season, and using our money to improve our defense instead. walshfan
In no possbile scenario do the Bengals pay Kitna anywhere close to that amount..He's an aging weak armed QB thats on the downside.. He does know the system and thats in his favor..Id think if they decide to keep him he'll be tendered in the 2 or 2 1/2 mil range ...anything more is ridiculous.. He did say that if Sherman was fired, he was out. I'm not sure if he would accept a role as a backup, or a cheaper salary.
7/11
kitna will sign for a lot less than franchise-tag dollars. he is too big a p***y to want to start anywhere else. plus, carson is "pretty much [his] best friend" *tear*
smith288
Plus Favre started his career in Cincy...why not end it playing for them? Nah... I would prefer not to see 3+ ints a game.
buck3y3d
I might be the biggest supporter/fan of Kitna on this site and in no scenario do I franchise him.I don't think Farve would ever play anywhere but Green Bay. We're certainly not going to pay him what it would take for him to come here.
BengalsFan77
i think we should let kitna walk. i have never like his play. i do like what he means to this team and to carson. but he has never been and never will b anything more than an avg qb. and i for one and tired of mediocracy. and paying him that much would mean just that. worst case scenerio is that palmer misses half/all next season, so let krenzel get some playing time. hes a smart qb and i think he could manage the team with palmer out. while i really like jon as a person, its time to let him walk. USMC203
Let Kit go and sign TIM COUCH, he will be cheap and there is a good QB there if he had a O line to keep him clean.
HairOnFire
Not a chance. Kitna's market value was probably in the 2 million dollar range before Palmer went down, and might have been bumped upward to the tune of 2.5. Beyond that the only thing I'd consider is adding an additional year to the deal. This team has been built for the long haul by the coaches AND the front office. There's absolutely no way I'd swallow a franchise tag hit for Jon Kitna.
bengalboomer7
if we use one I think it'll be the transition tagI asked this in another thread, and can't find it right now.If you tag him in anyway, does he get top ten starting money or top ten backup money. If it's backup, I'd transition tag him

bengalboomer7
He gets starters money.Damn, are you sure?If so, that sucks, and doesn't make sense (just because that's not the way I wanted it.)
ShulaSteakhouse
It's too bad Kitna is awful - this team is going to have a tough season next year without Palmer, and that brutal schedule, for the first month or two.Nothing truly good ever happens here, we consider it a miracle just to have a winning record. Cincinnati sports just suck.
AMC
No way Kitna gets franchise tag coin....I say he will sign a two-year contract (to spread out any bonus) with a slight raise...
walshfan
Quincy Carter or Kurt Warner have the arms to play in this offense.Kitna doesnt plain and simple.. His dinks are embarrassing to watch get intercepted... He's fumbled 74 times in his career but none worse than sunday...
Stripes
How about Vinny Testeverde? Just kidding.Out of all the options I am seeing here, Kitna honestly looks like the best one. Assuming Bratkowski stays, he knows the offense and his supporting cast already has plenty of faith in him. This one's for Jon!

His dinks are embarrassing to watch get intercepted... He's fumbled 74 times in his career but none worse than sunday...You want drug infested Carter who hasn't played an NFL down in how many weeks? And for your point about turnovers with Kitna, Kurt Warner is your solution? C'mon, give us a viable option on who replaces Kitna and we'll talk. Otherwise, it's just more pointless Kitna bashing... A FRANCHISE tag means the player is essential to the Franchise. Thus top 5 at his position. The transition tag means they need the person almost as much as the rest of the franchise, thus the top 10 at his position.
oldschooler
A back up QB should be able to come in on a momentsnotice and lead a team to victory.Kitna is 0-2 in that department this year.He is a mediocre QB. His career stats say as much.No way is he worth top 5, top 10 or even top 20 money...
The_Next_Big_Thing
No way is he worth top 5, top 10 or even top 20 money...Like I said earlier, the team would be much better off going 0-16 next season with Pretzel at the helm spending the extra money it would take to sign Kitna with a Trans tag/Franchise tag on defenders/offensive linemen extensions than it would overpaying Kitna and going 16-0 for a season.
