...Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said Wednesday a hit to one of his injured knees by Bengals rookie middle linebacker Odell Thurman may have been a borderline cheap shot.

However, Steelers center Jeff Hartings said later in the day that the Thurman hit, which resulted in a 15-yard penalty for roughing

"I inadvertently tripped him," Hartings said. "It shows on the film."

With the Bengals leading the Steelers 21-14 during the second quarter Sunday, Roethlisberger rolled to his right on a third-and-5 play and hit Hines Ward for 18 yards and a first down. After delivering the ball, Roethlisberger - playing with two injured knees and a possible broken thumb - was hit about knee level by Thurman.

"I tried to let my body go limp so I could go down and I wouldn't hurt my knee," Roethlisberger said. "From what I heard, he got pushed or tripped or something. But any time you go low on a quarterback, you know it's a little dirty."

On the next play, Ward fumbled after a 7-yard gain on a reverse to the Bengals' 25 and the Bengals recovered.

Despite Hartings' explanation, Ward suggested the Steelers (7-5) will have the play on their minds the next time they face Cincinnati. The Bengals (9-3) beat the Steelers 38-31 to take a two-game lead in the AFC North with four games to play and endanger the Steelers' playoff hopes.

"I know of him, so he's not a dirty guy," said Ward, who, like Thurman, played at Georgia. "He's just out there running around trying to make plays. In the course of going down low and trying to tackle the guy, you're trying to play until the whistle's over. Fortunately they got a penalty and, luckily, Ben didn't get hurt."

But Ward acknowledged he has gone after other NFL players in retaliation for an incident in a previous game and said, "You make a note of the guy and make sure it doesn't happen again."

Asked whether he has made such a mental note about Thurman, Ward said, "Until the next time we play them, we'll remember him. I will."...

This is going to get out of hand. There's definitely no love lost between the teams. Both tackles were fine with me. Thurman was tripped and I honestly don't think Kimo's was intentionally dangerous.

I haven't come here to talk smack or anything. I know the game would have been different with Palmer playing and to tell the truth I wish he did. I'm not saying we still would have won but if we did I'd rather beat you with Palmer than without. Just as I'm sure you guys would rather beat us with Ben than without.

Yeah I read in the ESPN article that the Steelers were in their locker room chanting We Dey, and Larry Foote was on TV mocking the Bengals chant. Plus after Marvin's comments this should be one helluva heated rivalry for years to come.

It started when TJ was shown cleaning his cleats off with a Terriable Towl.... Yep, many years to come with these 2 teams.

Silly me to think it was illegal for a player to dive head first into a players' knee willingly.....guess the rules don't apply to Steelers' players...

That was a Bush league play by Kimo I don't care what anyone says he could've reached up and grabbed Palmer higher without diving into his knees.

He was NOT forced into Palmer, he simply kept going for his legs when he had the chance - NO ONE was touching Kimo at that point.

I am sure he was sorry for what he did - but that dive into the knee cap could've been avoided if he wanted to. If that were Manning or Brady (or even Ben I'm guessing) there would've been a flag, fine and possible suspension I bet.

Oh well time to get over it.

If you think it started with TJ and the towel incident you are wrong. This has been going on for a couple of years now, ever since we came back on them at the Ketchup Bottle in 03. Then the Steelers were talking all kinds of crap leading up to and during the game in October. Next year's two matchups will be outstanding.

I dont understand something. It was all well and great well O'dell went into Ben. Kimo accidentaly goes into Carson and its the end of the world. Carson being out wasnt the only reason that Cinci lost. The effort by the defense was simply not the standard Bengal level of play. The QB wasnt the only reason Cinci lost.

This is true. However, I am willing to bet that there would be a helluva lot more points on the scoreboard if the golden boy was in there the whole game. That seems to be the teams MO this year, score more, b/c our defense is suspect.

If you don't think that Carson makes a difference in that game than you are a Steeler homer. Go talk to all the Steeler fans that blame the losses to the Ravens and Jags on the loss of Big Ben.

Willie and Richie have known Kimo for a long time...They didnt think it was intentional..

Carson said he didnt think it was..

Marvin said he didnt think it was..

You want to blame someone? Blame Steinbach for not getting the job done on that play...

Quit whining about it.. It wont change anything....

Carson will rehab and hopefully we'll see him on the field come next season....

Yes, an island of reason surrounded by a sea of blind anger. If anything this game has fueled and re-invigorated a fierce rivarly.

Carson would have changed the outcome of the game in my mind. Our deep ball was eliminated. That said, let's not sound like those bitches over at stillers.com that make excuses for any and everything. We lost the game and Carson. Marvin calls the injury unfortunate, I would call it devastating as to the outcome of the game.

As far as Ben goes and what he said about going low on QBs. I wonder if he were asked about the hit on Carson would he say "But any time you go low on a quarterback, you know it's a little dirty." Of course not he would defend his teammate. That's what makes him an even bigger clown, he says things that are convenient for him at the time not really things that are true. Thats why I love Marvin. He said we aren't going to cry about it like their QB did. And we shouldn't either because you all know how pathetic they sound for their excuses.

f**k these guys. They went low. Next year I bet we do. They knew they lost and they went low. Apologize all you want. Im hoping I can find a fan to beat the hell out of. However since I live in another continent it miht be hard. However I called my friends and they promised me they would beat the hell out of any steeler fan they caught next year and break them just a lil for me.

I don't think he hurt Palmer on purpose and I'm sure he is sorry. But, the first thing he did after the hit was to look around for flags. At the very least, he knew it was a penalty.

When I got home last night, my 4-year old daughter asked me if the Bengals won. I said no, a Steeler player hurt Carson. Her response was 'Why, because they wanted the Bengals to lose?'. Maybe she has more sense than her old man...

Thank you. That needed to be said.

The hit would not have bothered me if not for the fact that Kimo put his right arm out and actually grabbed the other side of Carson's leg. BUSH LEAGUE. I loved Marvin's comments after the game. I am very worried about lingering effects on CP next year.

Even though he didn't play very well, Byron Leftwich said it best

Not a direct quote, but it goes something like this

"I hurt my leg, not my arm, I'll be fine"

If Carson was our starting RB, I'd be scared

Thats exactly what i was thinking too. Kimo didnt do it on purpose is crap, hes the exact person the steelers wanted to do that because the bengals and the media would come and say hes a classy guy we "know" him. Maybe he didnt try to put him out for the game but he definately tried to send a message, that the steelers were scared and the only way they could win is by injuring our PRO BOWL qb. And cant believe im quoting ben but hes right, "any time you go low on a qb you know its a lil dirty."

Head first? He bumped him with his shoulder. He landed awkwardly as he was planting his foot.

OMG, you guys are getting ridiculous! So the Steelers organization had this planned out with Kimo being the protagonist because the Bengals know that he's the last person anyone would expect to do such a thing? This turning into a psychological thriller.

Guys, get over it already, it was an unfortunate fluke. It was a clean bump and it wasn't intentional. It didn't even draw a flag.
