jjakq27 Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 http://www.bengals.com/news/news.asp?story_id=4926SLANTS AND SCREENS: There is a possibility that second-year defensive tackle Matthias Askew could make his long-awaited first appearance of the season in a back-up role behind starters Shaun Smith and John Thornton in place of the injured Carl Powell, but defensive line coach Jay Hayes is going to let practice sort it out. He said they could also use rookie Jonathan Fanene in his second game at tackle on passing downs even though he has played more tackle here than end. “He did it in college and he’s played some tackle here. He could do it,” Hayes said. As for Askew, the fourth-rounder from a year ago, Hayes said, “All our players know that at some point they could have to get in there when called because of injuries. He’s learning. He’s learning how to play the game with leverage and staying low.” . . . Quote
Spain Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Askew sucks his thumb! Askew sucks his thumb! Quote
schweinhart Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 If it's playing low with leverage that they're after, I'd guess Fanene gets activated. Best thing I can say about Askew is he looked better this pre-season than last from what I can remember. But if he don't get in this game it'd be hard to imagine he'll ever get in this year unless he's the last DT healthy on the roster. Quote
CantStop85 Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Fanene's looked good in the little playing time he's gotten this season so far....I doubt Askew will be activated. Quote
Spain Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 The dude is sucking his thumb, no time for playig! Quote

Maybe he was standing on the sideline in street clothes and someone got pushed out of bounds and ran into him? Quote
Dadraftnick Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Fanene has looked like he has the makings to be a real stud. While there is little tape to go on at this point, he has made the best of any PT he has got.I have to admit when the Bengals took Fanene I was questioning the pick.I thought it was a case of just taking a DE because they needed one and ignored the position in the draft. But I think Marvin saw something in this guy. He reminds me of a bigger stronger better version of Carl Powell. He has a knack for big plays.Mathias Askew is another thing completely. Some scouts had him rated in the 1st to 2nd rounds and some scouts had him as a 6th rnd to free agent pick up.He looked like a nice pick when they took him.Two years later, he has done nothing. It happens sometimes that guys take a while to get healthy or to catch on with the program. But, what I cant understand is this guy is always hurt and its not the same thing wrong with him. Somehow he manages to get injured in practice all the time. It seems like he is always in the injury report with something new. If practice is to hard for him, how will he make it through a game. When I see something like that I wonder if he is too fragile to play NFL football or if his heart is in the game.I hope he comes on and becomes an all pro. But, at this point it looks more like he is bust or one of those players you devolop for another team. Quote
cincy9275 Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 i would like to see what askew can do if he is just wasting a roster spot then he has to go . him and fanene should both play i like what i have seen out of fanene Quote
HoosierCat Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Askew was inactive today. I think we can firmly affix the "flop" label to him. Quote
semiotter Posted December 18, 2005 Report Posted December 18, 2005 Fanene's looked good in the little playing time he's gotten this season so far....I doubt Askew will be activated.GO CATS!!!!! Good bye CARDS Quote
TJJackson Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 I'd say this all but finishes Askew as a Bengal beond this year, if he can't get on the field amidst so many DL injuries...... Quote

Spain Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 Dont you know he is Marvins lover pushy, he cant go! Quote
walshfan Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 I too have officiallly thrown in the towel on Askew...this guy is either the dumbest, laziest or most injury prone draft pick Marvin has encountered.. Quote
Stripes Posted December 19, 2005 Report Posted December 19, 2005 Marvin has known how much Askew sucks all along, but blackmail can go a long way. If Marvin does pull the plug, then we can all expect to see some photos of dirty Marvin underpants all over Sportscenter. Quote
