HoosierCat
http://www.cincypost.com/bengals/2004/beng11-22-2004.html"I'm angry," said Lewis, who is a master at not publicly showing his emotions. "This is the angriest I've been. We cannot accept mediocrity. We are never going to go where we need to go if we accept this; if we accept playing close, accept being in the lead in the first half and not finishing the football game."How to shoot yourself in the foot...http://www.cincypost.com/2004/11/22/bengchart11-22-2004.htmlThe Bengals couldn't hold a second-half lead for the second time this season against the Steelers and much of Sunday's 19-14 loss at Paul Brown Stadium can be blamed more on Cincinnati's deficiencies than Pittsburgh's offensive prowess. Here's a list of penalties and mistakes the Bengals handicapped themselves with in the second half of Sunday's game:Third quarter• 2:46 remaining: Cliff Russell 39 kickoff return (Kevin Walter holding). Bengals, trailing 17-14, begin drive at own 28 instead of own 49 despite offsetting penalties• 2:37: Rudi Johnson 7-yard run (Chad Johnson holding). Bengals face 1st-and-18 at own 20 instead of 2nd-and-3 at 35• 0:46: Rudi Johnson 4-yard run (Offensive holding). No violator named but Bengals face 1st-and-20 instead of 2nd-and-6Fourth quarter• 10:25: Carson Palmer incomplete pass (Intentional grounding). Bengals lose down and 12 yards, face 2nd-and-22• 10:17: Rudi Johnson 8-yard run (Chad Johnson holding). Bengals face 2nd-and-27• 6:58: T.J. Houshmandzadeh 13-yard punt return (Reggie Myles illegal block). Instead of possession at the 32, the Bengals start at their own 11• 5:47: Jerome Bettis 11-yard run (Landon Johnson late hit). Penalty tacks on 15 yards and puts Steelers in Cincinnati territory• 2:45: Carson Palmer incomplete pass (Intentional grounding). Palmer doesn't get rid of the ball soon enough and it costs the Bengals a 2-point safety and their last chance at a winBottom line: we can win going away this Sunday...if we can keep the number of opponents below 2. Stripes
That game was certianly painful to watch. I don't remember if this happened in this game or the other Steeler game, but Palmer threw into triple coverage looking for Housh, and ended up with a pick six to James Farrior. I think it is safe to say we shouldn't expect any game killers like that one on Sunday.
HairOnFire
The Bengals are a different team. The Steelers are a different team. Looking back makes no sense. This thread sucks.
Stripes
The Bengals being a different team is the whole point. The Steelers have changed little since that game. Burress is about the only major change I can think of. I think the idea of the thread is to show that if we don't pull out a win, then we really haven't changed. turningpoint
exactly, this should be a big win for us.We played them so hard last year, this year we should beat them.

This thread sucks.Only since you posted on it. But that's neither here nor there. Fact is, both the Bengals and Steelers returned largely the same squads this year. Heck, no end of comment was made about how the Bengals returned all 11 starters on offense. And those starters likely would have beaten the Steelers at least once (in this game last November) had they made a few less mistakes. And given the abundance of yellow we saw vs. Houston and Jax, and the untimely red zone screwups against Tennesse...well, that's the $64k question for this week. Play a clean game and I think they win comfortably; blow themselves up with penalties and I the Steelers will shove an L down their throats. Stripes
The Bengals have been a penalty machine thus far, when playing at home especially. We have 30 penalties in two games here. If we commit 15 more against Pittsburgh, we probably won't stand a chance. I think the penalties were a very repairable problem, and we saw vast improvement against the Titans. Lets hope that was us playing smarter football rather than a softly officiated game.

Absolutely. The Bengals have improved on these problems and Pittsburgh is the same as last year. There is no reason we can't beat them at home. Because I'm getting the distinct feeling that a certain fan has gotten his blanket wet again.

Because I'm getting the distinct feeling that a certain fan has gotten his blanket wet again. Let's see, first I say that the Bengals would have at least split with Pitt last year had they not tripped over their own two feet, and then I hold that the Bengas will win comfortably as long as they lay a clean game. And that's being a wet blanket.
HairOnFire
Correct me if I'm wrong...and I'm pretty sure I'm not...but your first words in this thread dealt with a lengthy recap of how to shoot yourself in the foot. Then you darkly opined that the Bengals greatest threat to winning the game came at their own hands and not from the very good Steeler team they'll face. Yeah, that's wet blanket stuff. HoosierCat
Let's see, to recap: saying the Bengals will beat the Steelers if they avoid making mistakes = being a wet blanket.Oooookaaayyy.
