Steelers in trouble

I said this on the nfl forum and I'll say it here:

Damn! Ben hurt. I want him in tip top shape when he plays the Bengals. They looked VERY STRONG tonight, but I don't want any more excuses for why the Bengals aren't deserving of their record. Beating a healthy Big Ben will shut everyone up.

I look forward to it.

I was hoping like hell they would lose that game, but I did not like seeing Big Ben go down. I bet he's out a few, I'm thinking hyperextended knee, strained ligaments yada, yada, yada. I hope it is not more serious. On the bright side, the Steelers probably have competent doctors.

Batch will be fine. The defense and the bus will still win plenty of games.

What happened to Maddox? I thought he was thier backup QB.

He hurt his calf in practice and is out 3-weeks.

Roethlisberger may not be a top 5 QB, but he is very hard to sack, because he's elusive and so big and strong. He is also very accurate. Neither of these things are true for their two back-ups... and it is exactly what their offense needs in a QB.

One reason Ben has been so successful is that he doesn't make mistakes, partly due to his accuracy, and the fact that he doesn't have to throw the ball often.

He probably won't be out for the season, but he won't be ready to play for a few weeks. It looked really bad. Even if no ligaments are torn, they are stretched... and his knee cap is bruised if not broken.

The point is... they are even more one-dimentional now than they were before last night. The Jags will put 8, maybe even 9 in the box. They'll force the QB to throw... which is not where their offense thrives. We might catch a break and see Pittsburgh lose a home game against the Jags... which would really help. They are on a short week already... and currently look to only have one QB who can play.

As far as him being hurt against the Bengals... I don't care if they have excuses. We made all sorts of excuses as to why the Steelers went 15-1 last year... but the majority of the country didn't care about our excuses. injuries are part of the game... as we found out at the end of last year. I want to win the game... I don't care if it's with or without Big Ben... (although I never root for season-ending injuries).

Even if Big Ben does manage to come back in two weeks... which I really doubt... he will not be mobile. It takes a lot of time for an injury like that to your knee before you feel comfortable on it again. I've injured my knee in similar ways several times... It's months before its back to normal.

It sure didn't look good, but we won't know the details until the MRI today. I'll bet that he'll be out for at least two or three weeks minimum, but that's just based on the way it looked. Sometimes injuries look a lot worse that what they really are.

I have to agree. I don't know if other people are built the way I am, but my knee injuries were the ones that took the most recovery time. A "minor" knee sprain in high school had me on crutches for about 2 - 3 weeks. There was even one time that I injured the meniscus (cartilage in the knee), and it took me a good 6 weeks if not two months to get back to where I could run without pain. Of course, I don't have the doctors that professional sports guys do, but knee injuries always seem to take the most time to heal.

Yep... I tore my ACL and miniscus a few years back. After surgery and rehab, it started feeling good again... and then I sprained it. A simple sprain... no cartilage damage... no ligament damage... just a painful thing. Took me 3 weeks before I was willing to start running again, let alone try cutting and starting/stopping... all that stuff.

This is exactly why Palmer didn't go back in. It's hard to be effective again on your feet after a knee injury. Palmer still wears a brace... and his was a minor injury. We'll know more later today... but even if they MRI shows no serious damage... I don't see him playing for 3 to 4 weeks. That's just my opinion though. The doctors might clear him, but he just won't feel comfortable on it until then.

Let's keep in mind we sacked the crap out of Big ben in Cincy last year. Were it not for our own mistakes, we win that game. With Ben or without, we win both matchups this year.

The only reason that SD lost that game was Marty Schottenheimer. SD should be one of the top 3 teams talent wise, Marty will keep them from really reaching their potential.

One thing that jumps out to me is that the bengals D still is having trouble with big powerful backs. That is a serious concern.

Cowher said that Rottenburger may play against the Jags. Don't believe it. He does this all the time just to keep the other team guessing. It borders on the 'illegal' side, which they've been fined before for. My bet here is that he will be listed between Questionable and Probable for the next 2-3 weeks, but likely will not play for at least 2 weeks. I just don't trust them on these things, and I get very frustrated how they continue to be permitted to always paint the 'question mark' picture, just to make the other team prepare for multiple scenarios.

The Bengals struggled with Houston (0-4) and Jacksonville (2-2 at the time I believe), and you think they win both against Pitt this year?

I don't see that happening at all unfortunately.

I can be a fan and be somewhat objective too. :)

Kudos on your objectivity. Even though I do not believe the Bengals have played their best ball yet, I have to agree with you. Their defense and running game are just soooo good. Palamalu is a beast. He had Gates scared to death last night.

If they are fired up (ala the Denver game last year), I think they have a good shot in the jungle. But sweeping the Steelers is a pretty tall order.
