Clayton 1st and 10

4. Houston Texans at Cincinnati Bengals

This is an important game for Texans coach Dom Capers, who suddenly finds his efforts to build the expansion team in trouble. Capers fired his offensive coordinator, Chris Palmer, and promoted Joe Pendry. Pendry will be more disciplined in running things for quarterback David Carr. There will be fewer audibles called. The thought was Carr got into a bad habit of calling audibles out of passes to Andre Johnson and into runs. But the Texans didn't run the ball enough. Under Pendry, Carr is supposed to run the plays called and try to execute them better. Johnson has only seven catches and 38 yards, embarrassingly low numbers for one of the top receivers in the AFC. Perhaps a bigger problem for Capers is his defense. The Texans are giving up 24.5 points a game and 143.5 rushing yards a game. If they fall behind early -- which most teams have done against the Bengals -- they will be forced into making too many mistakes and could end up being blown out on the road. The Bengals could be 4-0 with a victory, but the schedule gets tougher in the next two weeks with road games at Jacksonville and Tennessee.

--------------------------

I like this article. Most of the paragraph is dedicated to what the Texans have done and will need to do to win this game. Then at the end, he sums it up by saying they'll probably get blown out. Good times!

Is it me or is Clayton the creme de la creme of nerds?

If there is ever a pictorial definition of a pencil necked dweeb who's first time of stepping foot on the football field was when the high school seniors depantsed him on the 50 yard line during gym class...

Sorry for the thread hijack. Good review. :D

It's all about the hair. If he'd just grab a tupet (spelling?) or a wig, then maybe his obvious nerdiness could be better masked. Instead, he leaves it be, and has those four or five strands of hair always waving to and fro in the Lambeau breeze. For shame.

I like watching Clayton and Salisbury going at it on Sportscenter. But Clayton still doesn't think this team is for real (i.e. not on Pittsburgh's level). It's true the schedule gets tougher, but if the Bengals play .500 football after winning this weekend, they make the playoffs at 10-6. Face it Clayton, the Bengals will be in the playoffs come January.

Wow. I thought that the Texans-Bengals game would have fallen off this list. One thing has always puzzled me about that column. Is it so hard to write three extra little blurbs so you cover all of the games instead of just 79% of the games? I know it's called "First and 10", but why only cover 79% of what's going on?

I've wondered the same thing. There's no point in making a top 10 or 11 list, when there are only 14 total options. Either analyze every game, or narrow it down to three or four.

Clayton is a pretty good analyst, but does mostly people-interest stories, or stories that involve post-game analysis. The Bengals haven't proven there on the same level as Pittsburgh because they haven't played a team like Pittsburgh. If they make the playoffs by only winning 7 more games, then i think Clayton's point will be proven not yours. There schedule is very winnable, but to show their in the upper echelon prior to the playoffs, they will have to beat the Pittsburghs, Colts, and Chiefs in the league.

I think they are as good as Pittsburgh, but they haven't proven this yet, and this week we'll do nothing to help the fact.

Agreed, and it is this simple fact that gives us little room to complain about any lack of respect from any media sources. When we win in Jacksonville, or when we beat the Steelers, then they will all be forced to bow and pay homage to all the Bengal gods that they have insulted for so long.
