Bengals | Knorr Works Out

Thu, 1 Sep 2005 10:15:06 -0700

Mark Curnutte, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports the Cincinnati Bengals worked out free agent P Micah Knorr (Jets) on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The Bengals are looking for a kickoff specialist, but do not want to carry two placekickers on the roster. Knorr could be a fit on the roster as a punter and kickoff specialist, duties which he handled with the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos.

why would kyle larson be waived?

I don't remember seeing a single good punt from him this preseason. In fact, based on preseason stats (nfl.com), he's the third worst punter in terms of average yards per kick. Larson seemed ok last year, but this preseason he has sucked, imo. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see another punter signed.

Yeah, Knorr sucked in Jets camp this year. Lost his job to Ben Graham, a vagabond Australian football player trying to make it in the NFL (his kicks have this weird spiral that seems to make them tought to catch, plus he had a better leg)

Career-wise, here's a look at Knorr:

His career punting avg. isn't ay better than Larson's. He averages about 3 yards more on KOs than Graham and has been getting a lot of TBs the last couple years, tho.

Larson played well last year, and improved as he went. I think, despite this bad preseason, he stays in Cincinnati.

That would be my guess as well, but he's had at least one horrible punt in each preseason game. And that's not what I expected after Marvin singled him out as one of the most improved players immediately after the first couple of practices.

No doubt, he has been disappointing, and surprisingly so. I have a feeling these Micah Knorr rumors will light the fire under his arse to get him back to his potential. If not, then we have another bad punter. Seems to be a theme in recent years.

Maybe his leg's tired - I realize it's been a tough camp, but it seems that alot of the guys are experiencing the dreaded 'dead legs' syndrome.

I think the real question is, is this more about Larson or Graham?

Given that Knorr isn't that much, if any, of an upgrade as a punter...I have to wonder. I think this in more about getting a guy who can give us more touchbacks on kickoffs without taking up an extra roster spot.

They would not be hunting a KO guy if shayne wasn't hurt and recovering. They just don't want to have warley use another roster spot for KO

DT out of mix, team turns to kicking game

By Mark Curnutte

Enquirer staff writer

The Bengals missed out on defensive tackle Corey Simon, who signed a six-year contract with the Colts Thursday, but they apparently are in the market for another punter.

The Bengals held a workout Wednesday for former Cowboys and Broncos punter Micah Knorr, who was waived Sunday by the Jets.

Kyle Larson's performance in the Bengals' past two preseason games has created some doubt in the second-year punter. He has a 39.3-yard average and 33.4-yard net, and he is the only punter on the team's preseason roster.

In 73 games as a punter, Knorr has a 41.4-yard average on 329 punts.

Knorr also could help the Bengals with kickoffs - their kicker, Shayne Graham, is coming off a groin injury that has prevented him from kicking off in the preseason.

Knorr has kicked off in all five of his pro seasons. In 73 games with Dallas (2000-02) and Denver (2002-04), Knorr kicked off 332 times with a 63.5-yard average. He had 47 touchbacks, so he has a strong leg.

Graham will handle field-goal attempts tonight against Indianapolis. Fellow kicker Carter Warley has kicked off in Cincinnati's three preseason games but is not expected to be with the Bengals after Saturday when the roster is cut to 53 players from 68.

The Bengals do not want to carry two kickers.

If they sign Knorr, the Bengals could waive Larson and Warley and have Knorr punt and kick off.

Graham, an accurate kicker with a big contract, then could solely kick field goals and extra points.

The team had not announced a roster move regarding Knorr as of early Thursday evening.

SIMON SAYS: Indianapolis simply outbid other suitors, including the Bengals, in locking up Simon with a six-year, $30 million contract that included $13 million in guaranteed money.

It's unclear whether Simon will be on the visitors' sideline tonight at Paul Brown Stadium.

ROBERTS BACK: Cornerback Terrell Roberts, having cleared waivers, is back on the Bengals' injured reserve list.

Waived Sunday with a knee injury suffered in the team's intrasquad scrimmage Aug. 5, Roberts will be under the supervision of the Bengals' medical and conditioning staffs as he completes rehabilitation.

INDY STRUGGLING: The Colts bring a five-game losing streak, dating from their playoff loss last season at New England, into today's game.

One of the favorites to unseat the Patriots as AFC champions, the Colts are 0-4 in the preseason.

The Bengals are 1-2 and have played poorly, except in spurts.

RECOMMENDATION: Bengals backup quarterback Jon Kitna put in a good word with Mike Holmgren, his former coach in Seattle, about former Bengals wide receiver Peter Warrick.

Warrick, whose contract was terminated by the Bengals Tuesday, signed with the Seahawks Wednesday.

"I talked to (Holmgren) and told him Pete is as unselfish of a major contributing guy as I've been around," Kitna said. "I don't think you're going to find too many guys in our locker room that were as universally liked as (Warrick)."
