Pollack loses job

But there is a reason Pollack was the first round pick, and is the key to this defense turning the corner.....

Yeah, what is that?

I don't think Pollack was the key to turning the corner, I think he is just a piece of the puzzle, not a Ray Lewis, Ed Reed or James Farrior type impact player.... at least not yet.

Then why did we take him in the first round?

Why did we take Perry in the first round last year? Was he the key to turning the offense around?

true derek very true, Its just that a rookie should now you need training camp and the best long term decision is sign the freakin contract!

60% of all holdouts are rookie contracts. I wish someone actually had a more correct statistic, but I would guess that is where it's at. You see a player like TO or Emmitt Smith make big news with a holdout, but veteran holdouts are less frequent than rookies, as you can always work to extend a deal, renegotiate, or sign as a Free Agent.

I'm not hating on DP at this time, but rather his agent(s). In Central GA, I've talked with a couple of local memorabilia promoters who had gotten or tried to get David as an autograph guest. Pollack commanded prices as high as Herschel Walker (who is officially a god in the Peach State), and his agent capped his signing at 500 items. Not unheard of in the grand scheme of things, but this was the first time these dealers had gotten these demands from a college player (who had just completed his eligibility). One of the agents (or more likely, his do-boy) sat with a counter and counted all the items that David signed, so that they would know if he had passed the 500 plateau.

For the record, Pollack was pretty cool when I met him, signing my UGA mini helmet, and inscribing "3x All American, Lombardi, Bendarich 2004" (Yeah, he spelled Bednarik wrong.) He also posed for a picture with my one year old daughter. Seemed like a nice kid.

I cant answer that, and the offense wasnt exactaly in need of total turning around. The Perry pick is still a head scratcher.....

Have you guys never seen Pollack play?? You act like hes a scrub... Pollack is a Pro Bowl in the making.. The bengals have the money to pay the guy just step up and give him the signing bonus he deserves..

I'm tired of every season Mike Brown and the rest of his crew costing the Bengals a shot at the playoffs.. For god sake there selling more tickets than ever just PAY THE GUY!!!!!!!

Pollack's just a kid, listening to his agents and all.

I have no problem with that, happens all the time.

I'm very grateful they've got Marvin Lewis around, along with a heckuva a good player in Landon Johnson to replace him.

David may have to expect some serious bench time this season because Landon's absolutely for real.

my $.02 worth.

"Just wondering...if Pollack gets into camp, hopefully by tomorrow, and he shows why he was drafted in the first round, could Landon possibly compete with Brian Simmons for the other LB spot?"

Landon Johnson will be Brian Simmons replacement eventually. Lewis is trying to set the team up for the future, his draft selections have been all about drafting for the future, Perry was signed because the team needed a replacement for Rudi in case they could not afford to keep him. They did have to keep him because Perry showed them nothing all season.

This sort of logic is what leads a team into more than a decade of losing and frustration. We have the depth to work out this situation. We can't let a rookie, even if a first rounder, dictate our financial decisions. The Bengals know what they're doing, In Marvin We Trust.

What does he deserve? How many career NFL sacks does this guy have? Tackles? Passes Defended? Yeah, lets just throw the money truck at him. I think everyone here, especially Spain is missing the bigger pic here. In the thread that has a poll about Pollack I basically said that if I was in his shoes I would be trying to get as much money as I could, and I believe anyone else that says different is full of caca. Now, if I was in the Bengals situation I wouls be trying to pay him at less as i could while still getting him into camp, anyone else that says different I also think is full of caca. I know this term get's used too much, but it's business, nothing more. But this little dance definitely affects Pollack more than it does the Bengals and if the Bengals cave in to whatever demand he has it will effect our ablility to resign vets, and future FA's

True. But there's a reason Marvin, the one we all trust, selected Pollack in the first round. I can think of two. He's that good. And we can be better WITH Pollack.

You make some great points BB and further help our little group's notion that rookie contracts should be set via scale (standardize as JC put it) rather than negotiations via slots (not slits).

Blessing in disguise! Pollack will be eased-in to his role gradually, maybe be a 3rd down/situational player for a while, and will prove he's ready to start first before just having the position handed to him based on college scouting.

Sure seemed to work for Geathers, Madeiu and Keiwan.

Who knows...but hate relying on rookies to fill major needs right away.

Hate to disagree with you shula but i think Marvin had no plans of easing this guy in. He and ODell and Steinbach or the only guys Marvin gave a starting spot in mini camps. Pollak gave it too us hard and really himself because he will have to be eased in at this point. So now we can look forward to how he wil do next year!

Obviously Pollack is behind in his preparation, but it has nothing to do with Landon doing well. Landon just happens to be very good and very versatile. As other people have said (and I have said elsewhere), Landon is Simmons' eventual replacement, he just happens to be useful in other places in the meantime.

So Landon will split time with the rookies until they're 100%, then he'll start taking playing time away from Simmons. So even though they don't play the same position, Pollack is losing playing time to Simmons, not to Landon.

If things go as ML hopes, Brian Simmons, very soon, will be our fourth best LB and will be re-negotiating his contract to stay on the team. But if you'd prefer, Spain, we could just cut Pollack and continue to pay Simmons' back-loaded contract. Why bother puting the best team possible on the field?

Marvin doesnt have much patience , and thats why I love him. LJ IMHO will keep Pollak off the field if he doesnt wise up real quick. This is no scrub he has been replaced with! Also LJ is a year ahead, LJ is a sophemore that will make a big difference! The real ? is how long can Pollak holdout till LJ just out performs him this is a beautiful business decision by the bengals! Put the twat in his place!
