Scrimmage Comments

Aside from CJ and Palmer, who seemingly "hooked up at will" according to Lap and Brad (with one long bomb for a TD) the defense stopped em over and over.

Thurman sounded like he was all over the place. Perry and Wilson played well.

The o needs to get it together and get Willie/Warrick back.

Terrell Roberts went off on a cart with a knee injury - first major injury, they are hoping it's not a serious ACL injury.

Lots of mental mistakes supposably.

About all I know right now - will be listening to scrimmage tomorrow at 1pm EST.

Just got home from the scrimmage. There were 8,500 freaking people at the scrimmage - a new Bengals record, so I hear.

At any rate, I dunno if the offense was just fooling around, or if the defense was playing that good. The part that pissed me off the most was the O had like 5 illegal procedure calls. Just alot of ticky tack mistakes.

And for the record, Chris Perry looked juussssttt fine to me - he didn't seem like anyhting was bothering him. Hope it stays that way.

Bengals | Defense Dominates During Scrimmage

Fri, 5 Aug 2005 19:33:32 -0700

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports the Cincinnati Bengals' defense dominated the offense Friday, Aug. 5, during a 40-22 victory in the Bengals' intrasquad scrimmage before a crowd of about 8,500 at Georgetown College. Led by backup MLB Larry Stevens, who recovered a fumble and had two tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage, the defense avenged its 70-15 loss last season by shutting out the offense on four red-zone trips. The offense did provide one highlight, however, with a 43-yard touchdown pass from QB Carson Palmer to WR Chad Johnson working against third-team S Patrick Body.

Geoff Hobson, of Bengals.com, reports Cincinnati Bengals LB Landon Johnson started the team's scrimmage Friday, Aug. 5, in rookie holdout LB David Pollack's left outside linebacker spot. And when LB Brian Simmons (illness) couldn't play because of a throat infection, rookie LB Odell Thurman manned the middle linebacker spot.

I think it's gonna take Pollack 3 games to get his starting role back

Bengals' defense dominates

Offense scores only 1 touchdown

By Mark Curnutte

Enquirer staff writer

GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Bengals' defense, despite heavily tempered comments by coaches, dominated the offense Friday night in the team's annual intrasquad scrimmage.

The offense scored only one touchdown on a 43-yard touchdown pass by Carson Palmer to Chad Johnson, who had beaten rookie free agent cornerback Patrick Body on a fly pattern.

Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowl receiver, had nine receptions for 134 yards.

Otherwise, the defense had its way, winning 40-22 in an adapted scoring system at Georgetown College.

The first-team offense twice stalled in red-zone possessions inside the 20-yard line, and the second-team offense came away with no points, as well.

On its second drive, the first-team offense moved to the de- fense's 9-yard line but moved backward on a pair of illegal motion penalties.

"You can't do those things," said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis, who reserved specific comment about most players until he saw the film.

Backup linebacker Larry Stevens had a strong night with three tackles and a fumble recovery on the only turnover of the game.

"We have to improve our pad level in every area, blocking for the ball carrier, protecting ourselves from blocks, tackling. We've got to play lower," Lewis said when asked for his general impressions. "We got a lot of good work done on special teams."

Coordinator Chuck Bresnahan's defense showed improvement compared to live work in practice Wednesday night.

"At least we got to the ball," he said. "We're still not a good tackling football team. We got a little more disciplined in our pass coverage. But we made one more step forward."

That was no "bobble" by Henry. He adjusted and nearly made a helluva catch on a ball that was poorly thrown. Official ruled him out of bounds, but he looked in to me.

He got immediate congrats from two coaches and teammates for damn near making a sweet play.

The o needs to get it together and get Willie/Warrick back.

Warrick isn't coming back, get used to it. Our other receivers are playing well enough that in his last season, still injured and unable to take part in training camp, he's fallen to the bubble. Even if he does stay on the roster, he will have a hard time breaking the depth chart past CJ, TJ, CH, and KW.
