The Cincinnati Bengals Actually Do Have A Man Of The Cloth!

An exerpt from publication date: 07-11-97

Gospel comes to the playing field

Stephen Huba, Post staff reporter

Former Cincinnati Bengals chaplain Wendel Deyo remembers all-pro offensive tackle Anthony Munoz making a startling confession to him the day before the opening game of their 1981-82 Super Bowl season.

''He said, "I don't know why I'm playing. I'm not motivated,' '' Deyo recalled.

The chaplain, an Athletes in Action staff member, took Munoz to Romans 12:1.

''I said, "Anthony, you can literally present your body back to God on the field tomorrow and worship the Lord by the intensity of your competition,' '' Deyo said.

Munoz went on to a spectacular 13-year career with the Bengals in which, according to Deyo, each game was an opportunity to thank God.

Deyo, now national director of Athletes in Action, said the Lebanon-based organization wants to repeat the Anthony Munoz story across all professional sports.

The current chaplains' name is Ken Moyer. I talked to him on the phone once asking if I could speak to the Bengals during there chapel time before last years Bengals-Falcons pre-season game...he said no, because I wasn't black, no kidding, it's true.

However, if you google "Bengals Chaplain" my sermons on this site show up 1st, before the real chaplain...

Like my sermon I posted today...

Would this be considered an example of the man keeping you down because God told him to? I'm almost certain the Klan tried that angle first! Sounded as rediculous then as it does now.

His reasoning was that he was white but a lot of the players were black, so the only visiting chaplins' had to be black because that would be better.

He wasn't impressed when I told him that I was a Polish Jew that spent 3 years in Africa and I can break dance.

Nah...I know what he was doing. He wanted to be the ONLY token white guy there. Kinda like representin' for "Whitey" like the towel boy on an NBA team!
