BENGALS INSIDER

Johnson happy with contract — for now

By Chick Ludwig

Dayton Daily News

CINCINNATI | On the field, wide receiver Chad Johnson is a route-running, pass-catching, yardage-eating, touchdown-scoring machine, playing every down with unbridled enthusiasm.

Off the field, in front of microphones, TV cameras and notebook pads, he's like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're going to get.

Which brings us to the mixed signals he's sending about his contract.

Johnson, who became a client of high-profile agent Drew Rosenhaus in the offseason, tells the Bengals media that everything is cool with the $10 million signing bonus he received as part of a $25 million extension he signed in 2003 that will keep him in Cincinnati through 2009.

Then he turns around and tells Jeff Rickard of Sporting News Radio he can envision a situation that would cause him to hold out in the future.

"Where you're outperforming what you're making or your worth is more than what you're making. I think that's the right time to go back and ask for more. Because when you don't perform to your organization's standards, what they do is either make you take a pay cut or they cut you," Johnson said.

"So it has to be able to go both ways. When you're outperforming what you're making, why not be able to go out and ask for more when they can let you go when you're not performing to their standards?"

Johnson will be in training camp when players report on July 28. But all bets are off for 2006.

Know this: Rosenhaus doesn't get paid his three percent commission from Johnson until a new contract gets done. It's doubtful that Drew and Chad can wait until 2010 for that to happen.

If what comes around goes around, why ain't he dead yet? I'd like to at least see his ass passed around a prison cell block a few times hundred times like in an episode of "Oz," just to see how he likes what he's been dishing out!

AAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...nice one Billy...the boy is back, ladies and gentleman. High time you start dishing it out again...of course, you could have been all along in the valleys of Gomora (Smack Forum-I don't troll down there too much since I know you're covering that neighborhood)

Is it a sin to pray that God do something creatively bad in biblical proportions to Mr. Rosenhaus? If I throw down the creativity gauntlett and God responds, will his picture end up on www.rotten.com ? I chaplain can dream can't he?

Batten down the hatches. I'm only warming up. Not even close to regular season form, and don't worry about the Smack Forum. That's MY beat.

Speaking of beatings, where's my boy "Shooteryourloadonme?"

I took the article as that if the Bengals dont anti up next year then he might have too. sounds like Chad just doesnt wont to do it this year because the Bengals dont have the cap room. As soon as the Bengals have the cap space is when he will threaten holdout. However our front office isnt going to let it get that far. In short I think what we have here is a gentlemans agreement that when they have everyone locked up CJ gets his cash. Just good business so dont freak CJ making less this year for the team. He is his own man and Rosenhaus isnt going to control him as he does his other clients.

so what. we worry bout it then.

What ditty said. 2005 is here. 2006 is a worry for another day. It could be the Bengals will renogotiate again before we get to that point. They did the last deal with him a year earlier than they had to, they may do it early again. That is for next calander year. This calander year has the Bengals in camp in two weeks. Thank god.

Yeah, because i remember reading that article a while back where Rosenhaus planted some type of mind altering chip into CJs brain while he was sleeping, which caused CJ to voluntarily change agents over to Rosenhaus, and then begin obeying Drews every command.

Be real guys, CJ wants money just as much as the next guy. He deserves it, and he will get it. Simple as that. Couple things to be grateful for, hes not holding out this year, and at least his agent isnt the Postons.

Remember though, hes not making close to what most players on his level are making right now. There are many players worse then him that are making more then him. You guys make it seem like football isnt his job. Hes looking to get set to live comfortably for life. Im pretty sure that if any of you saw a guy doing less work then you consistently and getting paid more at your same job, you would ask for a raise as well.

BTW, im not hating on any of the posters on here about this, BB your my boy, but CJ deserves his money, and to think that hes only holding out because of his agent is foolish.

It isn't foolish when he's parroting, virtually word-for-word, Rosenhoser's arguments.

If Chad keeps cranking it up, will he soon deserve to be paid like an elite WR? Yup. And I've little doubt the Bengals will be willing to work out a long-term deal that makes him an even more very rich man.

The trouble with the "when you outperform you should get paid more" argument is that when players underperform, well, I've yet to see them pay anything back. How much did Warren Sapp deserve to be paid, based on his performance, versus how much he really made, last year?

When they underperform they get cut. Or take pay cuts, like Nate Webster did.

Wartren Sapp is still a Raider. Neither Champ Bailey nor Clinton Portis lived up to their lofty paychecks last year, but they're still where they were.

Beyond that, players might get cut, but they don't have to give back that "advance on salary" known erroneously as a signing bonus. If you're going to make the argument Chad/Rosenhooker are making, then you also have to argue that the guy who gets a 5 year deal wth a $10 million signing bonus, and then gets cut after 2 years because he sucks, should have to repay $6 million to the team.

Chad wants a ring. He knows he can get a ring in Cincinnati and do something that has never been done before. Playing in the Super Bowl is the ONLY way he is ever going to be considered in the same class as his idol, Jerry Rice. He won't hold out in the year we need to renew our line because he isn't stupid. He knows if the Bengals don't take care of them, he won't get the stats because Palmer can't get him the ball if he is flat on his back.

Just another athlete not honoring his contract; what else is new? Oh well. Same ol' same ol' in the NFL.

theres glitches in the salary cap no doubt...from a players standpoint if u overperform, u have to hold out or something to get a better deal, and from an ownership standpoint if a player underperforms they either cut the player or make them restructure etc.

all i know is its better than baseball's situation where u can pretty much do anything.

Overall from a league stand-point? Yes. However, MLB has the best structure for players in all the sports combined.

for players yes...CUZ THERE IS NO STRUCTURE. well there is by the amount of years etc...but if a team wants someone all they have to do is pay....in the nfl its different, u have to have the balance etc to pay them.
