CantStop85
I've been reading through other threads and people have been asking the question "Who should be starting at OLB and MLB?". Right now we have Brian Simmons at LOLB, Odell Thurman at MLB, and David Pollack at ROLB. This lineup is fine, but what about Landon Johnson? After all, he was the 3rd leading tackler for the Bengals as a rookie last year. But, Odell is too good not to start and David Pollack and Brian Simmons certainly aren't replaceable. So why not switch to the 3-4? If we did, wouldn't we be utilizing talent better than by using the 4-3? I mean, you can't tell me that John Thornton and Bryan Robinson are more talented than the likes of Landon Johnson. You could possibly argue that it would make it harder to stop the run...but the run stopping doesn't get much worse than it did last season...so what's your opinion? The 3-4 or the 4-3?

ArmyBengal
The 4-3 will be the base and we will probably see a mix, but I have to think they will keep it simple stupid for the youngsters. As they progress, so will our defensive schemes IMO.WHODEY !!!

sodikart
I don't understand why Pollack and Thurman got the job already I can understand one of them. LJ had a tremendous year, last year he missed the first few games then had amazing tackle numbers in some games. Is his injury that bad, that Marvin has taken him out of the starting line up? I like LJ and I think he is two good to sit on the sideline most of the year.

No offense, but that is kinda a stupid statement. I am a lawyer from TN, I am NOT a pro football coach. I am a knowledgeable football fan. I do NOT have access to the strenghts and weaknesses of the Bengals personnel groups or individuals as pro football players. On something as fundamental as what base defense to run, it is hard to do anything but defer to ML on that one. If he says 4-3, it's 4-3. And, btw, for all y'all advocating a 3-4...just how long do you think it would take to iron that out? I think quite awhile...putting another season in jeapordy. I would not be thrilled with that, and I don't think ML would be either.---A drone

Defender
I say we should go with a base 4-3 and some 46 defense thrown in from time to time. Anyone else agree??Just kidding, wanted to see if you were paying attention...

It's making people's head hurt.We have NO ONE on this roster who could play true NT in a 3-4. But let's not let details get in the way. Clearly ML has been planning all along to keep a base 4-3 (which they can indeed have some 3-4 and 4-4 looks out of), and I, therefore, think the Bengals should stay that course. BengalByTheBay
Uh, well, we've got 4 or 5 really good WR's, I think we need to get an offensive scheme to get them all on the field too. No, the personnel isn't better suited for a 3-4 defense. It is better suited for a 4-3 defense with depth at linebacker. We only have one big boy at linebacker and in a 3 4 you need a bunch of guys Pollack's size. We also lack a true nose tackle.A 3-4 would be a disaster.Besides, Marvin Lewis as a coach is a 4-3 coach, and thus the defense is better as a 4-3.
