BengalByTheBay Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 Hobson's quotes today included a few interesting little tidbids.ROOKIE STARTERS: Also Wednesday, Lewis said the club’s first two draft picks, left outside linebacker David Pollack and middle linebacker Odell Thurman, are headed to the starting lineup. Second-year middle linebacker Landon Johnsn is still rehabbing an injured shoulder. "Both guys came out very well coached at Georgia, so it's an easy transition just like it was last year with Robert Geathers," said Lewis of the defensive end the Bengals took out of Georgia in the fourth round. "It would surprise me if both are not first day starters. Nobody is ahead of (Thurman) right now. Everybody else is losing ground." . .. Lewis also said that incumbent starting left end Duane Clemons, a no-show for all the voluntary practices, is expected for next weekend’s mandatory minicamp, but that he is running behind starting ends Justin Smith and Robert Geathers. "Not unique to him. That's why he's on his third team," Lewis said of Clemens. "He's in a huge battle. He is behind the line. He's got a lot to gain back." Sounds to me like Marv is sending some not so subtle messages. Neither one is a real surprise, I expect, to most of us. Odell seems to have been impressing in voluntaries and Landon is still rehabbing. But, I do recall Landon being tabbed as the starter in the clubhouse back before the draft. As for Clemons, interesting comment about this being his third team. Two ways to look at that I suppose. He could be saying that because he's been around, he knows that the guys in the voluntaries are gonna gain ground. The other way to look at it is he's on his third team because he got pushed out twice before. Hard to say without seeing how ML delivered that line, but it sounds pretty edgy to me. Clearly, Geathers is the future at end, but I haven't heard anything this pointed about him for sure starting from Lewis yet. Quote
HoosierCat Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 Re Odell v. Landon: no big surprise. Landon is rehabbing, Odell is on the field, naturally he will be gaining ground. If he can do enough to win the starter's job by September, wonderful. They never wanted Landon at MLB anyhow and an up-to-speed Odell just gives us that much more flexibility.Re Clemons, that's a warning shot across his bow. If he isn't going to commit to the team and show up...the team's not going to commit to him. If there's one thing Marvin has made clear in his time here it is that you are either all the way in...or all the way out. Duane has already lost the starting DE slot...now he'll lose the "Carl Powell" role if he doesn't step it up. Quote
bengalboomer7 Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 Man, marvin doesn't sugarcoat anything does he! Is it possible to have a completely plutonica man crush on another man Quote
HoosierCat Posted June 8, 2005 Report Posted June 8, 2005 Is it possible to have a completely plutonica man crush on another man It is but I understand the half-life of the relationship is about 24,000 years Quote

BengalByTheBay Posted June 9, 2005 Author Report Posted June 9, 2005 I've looked back, but I still have no idea how this turned into a man-love thread (Not that there's anything wrong with that...) Quote
7/11 Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 while i do have a certain spot in my heart for dr. marvin, i am a breast-man...i dig the odell quips...in my opinion, thurms is gonna be the leader of our defense. he's got the attitude and the athletic ability...and most importantly, my blessing. andybren Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 I want Marvin to adopt me. Is that wrong? Quote
The Big Orange Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 "Clemmons, get against the wall. Take you cup out, hand it to me. Move your hands..no, put them behind your back...now stay there...hiiiiyaahhhh...get up son...you're not cut yet... but let that kick to the jewels teach you a thing or 2 about voluntaries...here's you cup back." Marvin whistles as he skips down the hall. Quote
UofLnMU Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 To heck with Marvin, maybe Drew Rosenhaus can adopt me. I just about died when Kornheiser said that someone asked Rosenhaus if he had a soul in an ESPN chat. And then Rosenhaus got a bit defensive, "I do! I do have a soul. A big one!" Quote
bengalsLB Posted June 9, 2005 Report Posted June 9, 2005 if i'm not mistaken in a recent story on bengals.com lewis said both pollack and thurman would be starters on opening day. Quote
membengal Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Yeah, not a lot of lines to read between here. Sometimes ML can be wonderfully clear in his remarks. We have a new MLB and he hails from Georgia. Quote

There's no mystery. This is Clemons 3rd team and the first two, Minnesota and Kansas City, willingly let Clemons walk without putting up any kind of fight shortly after he proved himself to be a marginal starter who couldn't stop the run. In Cincy he has to be seen as a positive addition due to the lack of talent that Lewis inherited at the DE position, but with the rapid emergence of Geathers that's changing. Quote

Those comments by Coach Lewis didn't sound too good for Clemons to me. If I was Duane I'd be picking out a nice comfy spot on the pine to sit on. It seems he had his chance and blew it. Quote
KiLBurn Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see ML drop both Clemmons and Powell, while keeping 2 out of Smith/ Fanene/Patterson. Quote
BengalByTheBay Posted June 10, 2005 Author Report Posted June 10, 2005 I would be surprised to see Clemmons let go. Whatever his attitude problems are right now, he would be a real good backup, probably at 2 spots situationally. He wasn't ever much of a workout warrior to look at him, he just plays well. Based on his age and ML's comments I think he's seen the last of his starting days, but dude could be real productive in rotation. Quote
The Big Orange Posted June 10, 2005 Report Posted June 10, 2005 Kil, do you know what you get when you void a team of all it's veterans...you get...you get...damn, I wish I knew other teams better so I could give you an example...a team that doesn't win much. Clemons will be excellent depth and Powell is serviceable depth. I doubt if either of them goes...especially Clemons. Quote
