espn's power rankings

Recommended Posts

Listen up kids. This is your brain:

2005 Power Rankings:

#1 Patriots 14-2-0 The Patriots took some hits this offseason, but with Belichick, Brady, Dillon, Seymour, etc., they're still the team to beat.

#2 Eagles 13-3-0 The Terrell Owens saga obviously will continue to be the big story in Philly. Owens can certainly be a headache, but there's also no doubting his talent -- nor that the Eagles are a better team with him on the field.

#3 Colts 12-4-0 Offense will obviously be there, but did the Colts do enough in the offseason to help the defense?

This is your brain on drugs:

#7 Ravens 9-7-0 The Ravens got Kyle Boller some weapons this offseason; now he has to prove he knows how to use them.

#11 Chiefs 7-9-0 K.C. was all about defense this offseason (signing Kendrell Bell, trading for Patrick Surtain, drafting Derrick Johnson). But will it be enough to make the Chiefs a contender again?

#12 Cowboys 6-10-0 With some solid offseason additions, and a weak NFC, the Cowboys should be back in contention for a playoff spot in 2005.

Any Questions?

As always, the Rats show up higher than they deserve...yawn. The Cowboys stood out to me also, BB. What a weird couple of years. Parcells took over at the same time that ML took over here. His first year they waaayyy overachieved, making the playoffs. Last year they were horrible, Parcells lowest point apparently being whacked at PBS based on his press conference afterwards. Over those same 2 years, ML has gone .500 in each season and, by all accounts, has a plan for adding speed and youth that should really start to pay off this year. I think a playoff run, or better, for the Bengals this year sets up a very disfavorable comparison for Parcells.

The Cowboys are ranked high because of the QB change, and the first round of their draft. However, opposed to what is commonly propagated on this forum (and probably even by me sometimes) is that you can't count on rookies to boost your team to the playoffs. I would love to see Pollack be a stud on the field, and I think he can be, but it does worry me a bit that we are putting our playoff hopes on his shoulders.

Regardless, he's an upgrade from Hardy, at least he will be after a couple of games, so our defense will be improved, but let's understand that we are talking about guys, whether Cowboys, or Bengals, that have never taken an NFL snap. You can't rest too much hope on them (especially when they have never played a snap college or otherwise at their new position).

P.S. I love Pollack, I'm just trying to be realistic

I totally agree thinking that our defense is about to get good, but how long is about? If it's 5 weeks and we do another 1-4, then we've blown ourselves out of the playoffs. If it's 2 weeks, well, now we're talking.

I like being rated 17 or wahtever...It's fly over country...people only pay attention to their team, who top 7 and bottom 4, and if there has been a huge leap...thaose are the teams that are put on the radar.

At 17 everybody from the Browns to the Bears are thinking that Cincy will be a good place to pick up a win if Chad has a bad day.

how do the Cowboys get #12 when they're starting quarterback is Drew f**king Bledsoe <_<

If you ask cowboys fan they will be more than happy to tell you the 50 zillion reasons why they ranked high. Wouldn't you say, Sanantonio?

You know how it is:

Drew Bledsoe = horribly overrated QB

Cowboys = vastly overrated every year

Drew Bledsoe + Cowboys =...well, you get the picture.

The Cowboys will not be better than 8-8, and will probably be more like 7-9 or a 6-10 repeat of last year. But if you ask their fans or any reporter anywhere in the general vicinity of Texas, the Cowboys are going to the SB and Drew Bledsoe is their key to glory.

Man, I hate the Cowboys.

I don't know that I've read anything that says the Bengals are putting their playoff hopes on Pollack's shoulders. I don't think anyone in the Bengals' organization is out of touch enough, even MB, to think that 1 guy, 1 rookie, is going to take the Bengals to the Playoffs.

The defense got a boost by drafting him, and signing Robinson, and aside from SS I think they have a pretty good base to work with. The offense is going to score points, they may even climb a little higher in the top 10, but the team is betting a trip to the playoffs on 3 new faces on defense and the veterans stepping up. They are certainly high on Pollack, but they know that a rookie who is playing a brand new position will not be the key to the Playoffs...just an upgrade from a slower veteran.

What about Mikey Brown . . . . "We are 1 or 2 players away from competing for the championship" Mike Brown, 1995
