HoosierCat
http://www.bengals.com/press/news.asp?iCur...=0&news_id=2821Gotta think that makes it pretty unlikely we will go for a defensive lineman in round one...news I'm sure billy will greet with great joy
TJJackson
If S Merriman somehow slips, or if Pollack is there at 17, they'd be in consideration, I think. S Cody is a possibility even though his speed isn't optimal because he can play inside or out.IMHO, not in consideration:E James - durability concerns D Cody's - headcaseM Spears - sluggish speed and low motor
HairOnFire
Perhaps this is just wishful thinking from someone who remains interested in adding D-line help, but I don't see it as a sign of anything related to the draft. It's just a one year deal and I'll bet that when the numbers are released they'll be appropriately tiny.
cover2
The guy is marginal at best. We can do better.
Bobcat Bengal
OH......Y'know, it makes a world of difference without that hypen in re-sign!I thought he had quit!
BengalszoneBilly
[Gotta think that makes it pretty unlikely we will go for a defensive lineman in round one...news I'm sure billy will greet with great joy I DO!! We need help more at the linebacker or saftey positions thanks to the signing of Robinson. Had we not gotten him, I'd still be on that boat. And BTW...Powell didn't "resign," he "re-signed" . When I first read the topic title, I thought he was quiting football! That happens here alot with news on players signing new contracts, and every time, I think the wrong thing! A fellow mods own creation? I don't think so. I might mention something for clarification like here, but otherwise you have the same buttons I got. I have to correct enough of my own errors! So, you've never "resigned" from a job with an employer? It must just be me because I've been asked to do so more than just a few times! HoosierCat
[so, you've never "resigned" from a job with an employer? Yup, I have. But you have to have a job to do that first, and Carl was a FA...

skyline
I'm glad he's back. The guys isn't an upper level player, but he seems to know how to make plays. I'll put Carl Powell on my depth chart any day...
BengalByTheBay
I'm glad he's back. The guys isn't an upper level player, but he seems to know how to make plays. I'll put Carl Powell on my depth chart any day... You know I was thinking the same thing when I read it on the team site. I figured the reaction here would range from rage (DPM "he sucks cause he's not dillon") to yawn. I'm not at all unhappy with keeping him as depth -- what he really should've been to begin with. I mean the guy can spell at 2 line spots which is very valuable (they're all just 1 play away from being T. Williams'd anyway) and he's decent. The fact that he doesn't have to be a starter should attest to improvement on the line (fingers crossed).
jditty47
i dont mind him, but i wouldnt have cried if we lost him for a draft pick or something better...
walshfan
The keyword in this case is "depth" nothing more than that and I agree with a previous poster that said "Ill take him for depth anyday"... Powell is a cagey vet..Versatility is another thing he brings to the table.....good re-signing!
schweinhart
Powell is definitely Marvin's favorite son. He made some good plays vs. Bills last year w/ a couple sacks and a stuffed reverse but Powell sticking on the roster means somebody else -- like Derrick Crawford -- won't.When he moves inside to play DT, Powell does have the quickness to run stunts w/ some results but when he has to face off straight up w/ an O-lineman, he gets "Carl Plowed". Keeping Powell will have a draft impact because I doubt ML cuts him. The Bengals would be more likely to pass by a player like Jonathan Babineaux.I'd have rather not seen him re-signed. jjakq27
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/art...SPT02/504060346Wednesday, April 6, 2005 Bengals re-sign versatile Powell Plays both defensive end and tackleBy Mark CurnutteEnquirer staff writerThe Bengals on Tuesday brought back another piece to a defensive line that will have to play better in order for the team's run defense to improve.Swingman Carl Powell, the first free agent signed by then-rookie Bengals coach Marvin Lewis in 2003, re-signed with the team for one season.Terms were not available, but agent Jerrold Colton had said Powell wanted to return for another season with Lewis. In 2004, Powell played in 10 games and missed six due primarily to knee injuries. He can play both end and tackle. He played in each of the final five games, with two starts. He sealed the victory against the Giants with his first career interception, on an Eli Manning pass that was tipped by Robert Geathers.Powell finished the season with 34 tackles, including two sacks, and had one forced fumble.Powell, who will be in his seventh year in the NFL, is the fifth unrestricted free agent signed this offseason by the Bengals. He joins Rudi Johnson, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Anthony Mitchell, as well as newcomer Bryan Robinson. One player who remains unsigned is Rich Braham, an unrestricted free agent who is the team's longtime starting center. The Bengals entertained a visit from former Mississippi center Chris Spencer this week. Spencer, LSU's Ben Wilkerson and North Carolina's Jason Brown are considered the top three centers available in the draft.Offensive line coach Paul Alexander showed Spencer around the team's Paul Brown Stadium facility. Spencer is 6 feet 3, 307 pounds, and is known for his balance and ability to quickly get into good blocking position against defenders. HoTbOy
Marvin's 1st FA signing so you know Marvin liked him...maybe not a starter but valueable none the less...plays 2 positions, can teach the youngsters, adds depth and comes CHEAP. could/should be better with better players around him...
