Steelers Restructure Smith's Contract

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers restructured the contract of left tackle Marvel Smith on Friday to free up $2.55 million in salary cap space.

Smith will be paid the minimum-wage base salary of $540,000 in 2005 instead of the $3.95 million in salary he had been due. The remaining $3.4 million was paid to Smith this week as a signing bonus.

Prior to the 2003 season, Smith agreed to a six-year contract that included a $6 million signing bonus.

Last year, Smith restructured his base salary and was given $1.7 million in bonus money.

Over the last three years, Smith has been given $11.1 million in bonus money while making the NFL minimum in salary each year.

The Steelers need the money gained from the restructuring in order to sign their upcoming draft class. They also might use the money to negotiate multiple-year contracts for restricted free agents Chris Hope, Verron Haynes, Lee Mays or Brett Keisel.

yeah, give that guy a ton of credit for doing what he can for the team and not for himself. I know that he still gets the money, but at least he is flexible and knew that this would be better for everyone.

But the Steelers will definitely not be what they were, and the Bengals will be everything that they haven't been for a majority of the last 15 years.

Can you smell that??? Smells like an AFC North Championship to me.

Loooove that Cincinnati cookin' :player: :player: :player:

Of course we over achieved last season. How often does any team go 15-1 one season and repeats it the next? I still think we'll be competing for the AFCN though.

The problem is, we haven't really upgraded due to the dire salary cap situation. What's that shark theory? If you're not going forwards you're dying? It's true in football too.

Taking the divisonal title away from the Steelers will still be a hard task. You don't go from 15-1 to being crap overnight.

You sometimes do though. Look at all the teams that have gone to the Superbowl in recent years (except the Patriots) and see how well they did the next season - Oakland, Tampa and Carolina for example.

Plus a few of those games in 2004 could have gone either way, obviously well done to us for getting the result, it's easier said than done to win tight games but we came up lucky too.

But if I'm going to admit that I have to say the same for 2003 and our 6-10 season, the luck didn't go with us that year.

Sometimes it's with you, sometimes it aint.

But even if you lose 4 games more than last year you'll still be at 11-5 which means Cincy have to hit 12 wins to top you. And 12 wins ain't gonna come easy (and that's if you lose 5).

It's gearing up to be a tight division and an interesting season. Bring it on!

 The Steelers themselves never imagined going 15-1 with a rookie QB. I am on the wagon that says they won't win 10 games...We were close to beating the Steelers both games an INT and A fumble cost us...They have not did anything to upgrade in FA and they lost a key piece in Plex...BENGALS AFCN CHAMPS...

Don't take them too lightly guys. Cowher is still their coach, and the bus is still running. They will be the Bengals rival in the fight for the AFC North crown, which won't fall into their lap as it did last season. The Bengals will wrest the divisional trophey from them on their way to their matchup with the Arizona Cardinals in the 2005 Super Bowl game! (BTW, the Bengals will find out that the third time is truly the charm in their NFL Championship Quest!) :player:

Steelers sign tight end Battaglia

NFL.com wire reports

PITTSBURGH (April 7, 2005) -- The Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran tight end Marco Battaglia as they seek to replace the recently released Jay Riemersma.

Battaglia, 32, did not play in the NFL last season and has not caught a pass since the 2001 season with Washington.

He has played 96 games in eight seasons with the Bengals, Redskins, Steelers and Panthers, catching 71 passes for 660 yards and two touchdowns. He was a second-round draft pick by Cincinnati in 1996.

Steelers won't sneak up on anybody this year . They'll be lucky to finish 9-7

I'm not sure about 9-7, but it certainly won't be as high as it was last season. After all the other teams in the league saw how the Pats brought Big Ben down to size in the playoffs, he's going to have a tougher go of it in his sophomore season.

So far the offseason has been a little worrying for me. We haven't really progressed and if you're not progressing in football, you're regressing. Maybe draft time will get a little exciting apart from that we've just had salary cap hell with multiple restructuring and lost a few key players. Don't get me wrong, Plax is the Giants problem now but Cedric Wilson isn't an adequate replacement.
