Brownies making moves

Recommended Posts

(I don't know how to post a link so I don't want any bitching)

Just read where the Browns are releasing Courtney Brown and bringing in Cris Hovan for a visit. They also are trying to sign Marqee Dougles(DE for Ravens)

Here's a funny tidbit. The Browns have gotten rid their last three first round picks(couch, warren, and now brown) and two of them was #1 overall :lol: Thanks Butch!

Thought I'd keep up on the division info

Browns might cut DE Brown

Tom Withers / Associated Press

CLEVELAND (AP) - Injury-plagued defensive end Courtney Brown will be released on Monday by the Cleveland Browns if the club is unable to restructure the former No. 1 overall draft pick's contract.

Brown, who missed the final 14 games last season after undergoing foot surgery, is due a $2.5 million roster bonus on Tuesday.

The Browns may still re-sign Brown, who has missed 33 games with injuries the past four seasons. Team president John Collins said Saturday that the club will continue talks this weekend with agent Marvin Demoff about redoing Brown's contract.

"If we get past Tuesday, Courtney may want to talk to and visit some other teams," Collins said. "But I think there's still a chance he'll come back to the Browns."

Collins said Brown has met several times with new Cleveland coach Romeo Crennel and seems excited about his possible role with the Browns. Last month, Brown said he'd be willing to move to linebacker in the team's 3-4 defensive scheme.

Browns general manager Phil Savage told The Plain Dealer that he'll discuss the team's plans with Brown on Monday. He would like to retain Brown.

"We want to make sure Courtney understands this is something that we have to do, not something we want to do," Savage told the newspaper.

Injuries have severely limited Brown's playing time and production as a pass-rusher. He has played in only 47 games during his five seasons and has totaled just 17 sacks. His injuries have included a torn knee ligament, a high ankle sprain, microfracture knee surgery and a ruptured right biceps tendon.

In Week 2 last season at Dallas, Brown tore a ligament in his foot and was done for the year. He only recently had screws removed following surgery, but at an awards banquet last month the soft-spoken Brown said he wanted to keep playing.

If the 26-year-old is released, he will be the third underachieving first-round draft pick cut loose by the Browns in the past eight months.

Before last season, the Browns released quarterback Tim Couch, the expansion team's No. 1 pick in 1999. Defensive tackle Gerard Warren, the No. 3 pick in 2001, was traded to Denver this month for a fourth-round draft choice.

Cleveland also is looking to trade running back William Green, the team's first-round selection, 16th overall, in the 2002 draft.

The Browns will be a better team this coming season. Crennell is mucking out the dawghouse and will draft much better than Butch, I'm sure. I also saw a blurb on profootballtalk.com this a.m. passing along comments by Edge's agent that Cleveland is among the places Edge could go. :o That'd be all we need, huh?

I don't believe in curse cause if they were true then we might be one of the most cursed teams ever no that the red sox curse is over! They will be bad next year with all the new players and the new scheme and all the other changes the turds have made this year, but I wouldn't be suprised if Crennel becomes the Brownies savior the way we all think that Marvin is our Savior. I see some great state battles coming to Ohio soon. :player:

i am more wooried about the steelers and ravens and not the sorry a$$ clowns

I'm more worried about the clowns only because, at this point, I don't see any reason to believe we won't be battling them for 3rd place in the division.

The Steelers won 15 games last year. They could get 5 games worse and still have 10 wins. Their losses in FA have been minimal and they signed a good young wideout.

Baltimore has lost some, signed some, but on the whole I think they're improving vs. getting worse so far this year. And for all the talk about the Bengals getting back injured players who could have made a difference, don't forget that Ogden, Jamal, and Heap missed lots of time for Balti last year, too.

Last year we split with a pathetic Browns club, split with the Ravens thanks to an historic Ravens defensive collapse, and lost two close contests to the Steelers. This year we'll faced improved Ravens and browns teams, and a Steelers team that remains formidable. And so far we've done nothing more than spin our wheels.

Maybe all the wishin', hopin' and prayin' will come true this time...maybe our youngsters will blossom, our draft will be filled with future pro bowlers, our injuries will be few, etc., etc. But I learned a long time ago that, as far as the Bengals are concerned, all that wishin', hopin' and prayin' will, along with $2, get you a cup of overpriced coffee.

Geesh Joisey, why don't we just hand the division to the steelers

I recall last offseason everyone picking them to be third in the division, but low and behold they put a great season together. Big Ben is going to go through some growing pains (sophmore jinx) and then there could be a QB controversy and poof they finish 7-9. It could happen. (BTW the bengals should have beaten them at least once)

The NFL is not like college ball where you have to be really good for a few years to have a chance at a championship. I understand that everyone is tired of being patient. Trust Coach Lewis.

I like the direction the defense is heading and felt they were better at the end of the season than at the beginning. Which makes me wonder if partial season stats are available. Anyone know how the defense ranked over the last 8 games?

Because at this point I think it's a toss-up between the Steelers and the Ravens. Anything could happen, the question is, what's likely. If Big Ben has a sophomore slump, why not Carson? I'm not counting on either to falter; I suspect both will be improved. But that only keeps us even. Today's signing of Robinson gets us forward a little, especially with the run-heavy offenses in the AFCN. Now let's see some veteran help at MLB and/or SS. Then we will have some legit reasons for hope.

I just don't agree, Joisey. Big Ben showed that he can be efficient with a stellar running game. Carson showed us that he can single handedly win a game if neccesary.(see Miami & especially balt) Their has been some small D shakeups over there and Plex was ben's favorite target. If our defenses gets better, then the Ravens O is still bad, and can't score points anyway. i don't think anyone in the division will argue taht we have the most high powered offense in the division, and as long as they still keep working on the D, I think the finished product will be enough to finsin at least second in the division!

B) I'm new at this but i have been a Bengals fan since 75 and this is the happiest I have been in a while. I think the browns will be a little better only because of crennel, B-more maybe losing Hartwell, Steelers losing Plex and the signing today of Robinson helps, if we draft SS Davis from Georgia I think we can win the division..

If the browns release Courtney Brown,I say we go after him,he may be injury prone but he is a force when he is healthy. We may be able to get him cheap since he has never had that break out year he is bound to get.He would be a huge pick-up

Are you kidding? He is not a force and never will be. All he does is get hurt and pick up paychecks. Plus he is from Cleveland. that says enough..

Welcome to the forums, HTO (just going with all caps for simplicity's sake! ;) )

I'd be nothing but thrilled were the Bengals to take the division. All I ask is that they show me some legit reasons to hope beyond "everyone we have will get better," which I've heard for quite some time. Last two years they have done that, reaching out in FA, making trades, and generally being agressive about improving the club. And it paid off, first in 2003 with one of the biggest single-season improvements in wins, and last year by holding firm despite a rookie QB, lots of injuries and a tougher sked. I think they've had a good thing going...just hope they don't blow it.

Because Carson did not win his first 15(?) starts. :(

The defense needs work, but I believe at least two of the positions are filled for the long term with second year players. :) Hopefully four more will join them in the next draft.

It's unlikely next year will yield a super bowl birth. But making the playoffs is expected. :player:

Cleveland releases former top pick Brown

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND - Defensive end Courtney Brown was released Monday by the Cleveland Browns, although the move may be only temporary.

Brown, the first overall choice in the 2000 draft, played five injury-plagued seasons with the Browns and never lived up to expectations. He was cut a day before he was due a $2.5 million roster bonus.

The Browns attempted to redo his contract before releasing him and will continue talks with his agent, Marvin Demoff.

"We are hoping this is a temporary situation and Courtney chooses to continue his career with the Browns," Browns general manager Phil Savage said in a statement.

Defensive tackle Jason Fisk signed a three-year contract with the Browns.

The 10-year veteran played the last three seasons with San Diego. He recorded 30 tackles and one sack in 15 games in 2004.

A realist speaks :(

The Clows have their Moses Crennell now and some of his off-season moves look solid:

Joe Andruzzi and Cosey Coleman at G, Gary Baxter at CB, Matt Stewart at LB.

Plus, they should have Sean Jones and Kellen Winslow back from injury.

Luke McCown and Trent Dilfer won't be great but they proly will only have to be Boller-like for the Clowns to stay in games.

As for the rest of the North, the Steelers are the worst 15-win team I ever seen

I hope the Ratbirds go 4-3 because I think that will make it easier to move the ball against them.

per ravensinsider.com the clowns are making a play for RFA Chester Taylor (Ravens). He had a pretty good day vs. us even tho we won in the end...

Chester Taylor signs with Browns

By Aaron Wilson

Date: Mar 16, 2005

OWINGS MILLS -- Baltimore Ravens restricted free agent running back Chester Taylor signed a $3 million offer sheet Wednesday with the Cleveland Browns.

The Ravens have seven days under league rules to decide whether they want to match a contract that includes a $2 million base salary and a $1 million signing bonus, according to NFL Players' Association figures.

If the Ravens opt not to match the offer, they would receive the Browns' sixth-round draft pick as compensation. Taylor was drafted in the sixth round out of Toledo in 2002.

The Ravens are likely to take the seven days before deciding whether they'll match the offer. Baltimore had indicated previously that they were inclined to match an offer sheet for Taylor, a valuable reserve. However, this offer likely exceeds what the Ravens were expecting to have to match.

The deal includes an incentives package where Taylor would receive an additional $100,000 if he is selected to the Pro Bowl and another $100,000 if he rushes for 1,000 yards.

The Ravens assigned Taylor the low tender of $656,000. If the Ravens had assigned Taylor the middle tender of $1.43 million with first-round draft pick compensation, as they did for safety Will Demps and defensive tackle Maake Kemoeatu, it would have been less expensive to retain him based on this offer sheet.

Taylor is a versatile, durable backup to Pro Bowl runner Jamal Lewis. Taylor gained 713 yards with two touchdowns last season while starting four games.

In 15 games last season, Taylor caught 30 passes for 184 yards to rank third on the team in receptions.

In 47 career games, Taylor has rushed for 1,112 yards and four touchdowns with 64 receptions for 445 yards and two touchdowns.
